From their web-site: "Timeless Records was founded in 1975 and is specialised in a wide spectrum of jazz styles. Its roots can be traced back to the idea of the booking agent, Wim Wigt, who wanted to, and succeeded in, bringing American jazz to Europe. Later, jazz musicians from all over the world became an important addition to the Timeless Catalogue. The first record, Eastern Rebellion by Cedar Walton (along with George Coleman, Sam Jones, and Billy Higgins), was just the beginning of this excellent collection. To date, the catalogue consists of more than 700 titles, divided into three main categories. Timeless Records continues to grow, not only re-producing historical jazz but also producing the newer contributions to the jazz music genre. The collection can be purchased in all good, jazz music stores. Our website and mail-order services give all of our customers the chance to purchase the CD’s that may be difficult to order and/or locate. In the Contemporary Catalogue, you will find CD’s by some of the jazz greats such as: Art Blakey, Chet Baker, Bill Evans, Tommy Flanagan and Lionel Hampton. The Traditional Catalogue includes traditional style jazz by artists like; Chris Barber, Acker Bilk, the Dutch Swing College Band, and Monty Sunshine, just to name a few. In the Historical Catalogue you will find some of the first jazz recordings ever made; from the Original Dixieland Jazz Band and Louis Armstrong with Fletcher Henderson, as well as many others. The collection has been complimented with informative booklets written by expert jazz historians. These CD’s are masterpieces in audio restoration. Additionally, you will find other labels which can be purchased via our site, including; Limetree, Sunny, World Wide Jazz, and Jazz Oracle.Furthermore, we can supply CD’s from the labels: Lake, Frog and Upbeat." Two recommendations: Original Dixieland Band (1917 - 1921) CBC1009 The first recorded jazz sides are included. Historically speaking, a basic document. well, we can discuss the quality of ODJB music... and Coleman Hawkins (1934 - 1939) CBC1006 As far as I know (any correction is greatly appreciated) this one contains about half of the production Hawk did during his stance in Europe. Not all the sidemen are what you´d call top-notch, but I find it very interesting.

Whom do you think did the best linner notes?
EKE BBB replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Don´t know much about the gush or Bush thing but I did enjoy his liner notes for the Art Tatum Complete Group Masterpieces! Dan Morgenstern is another favorite of mine. I find his comments on some Storyville releases very helpful! -
I´ve listened to BFT#7 a couple of times. Thanks for bringing us these two discs, Vint. There´s a sense of Soundtrack on some tracks and a latin groove on many others. I felt I could guess a couple of tracks in my first spin, but this was refuted in my second one. Notwithstanding, I´m afraid I haven´t had much time to do a proper listening, nor have I been in the mood to report track by track until now. And now I´ve read a few of the last posts in this thread. Don´t worry, Vint, many more posts and guesses to come!

John: We all know you´re an expert in this kind of things....

I hadn´t heard the material included in "Festival session" before. It´s a cookin´ date for sure. Paul Gonsalves tenor sax really smokes on "Copout extension". For lovers of drums, "Duael Fuel" is a must-have, with a terrific battle between Jimmy Johnson and Sam Woodyard. And for those who think jazz clarinet died when sax got the spotlight, just listen to Russell Procope and Jimmy Hamilton on "Idiom ´59". The sound is incredible. One of the best reissues I´ve heard recently. 5 out of 5 EDIT: I used the thumbs-down icon instead of the thumbs-up

SHEILA JORDAN´S OFFICIAL WEBSITE
-
Sheila Jordan is one of my favorite singers, for sure! A love her instrument-like voice. The way she holds the notes makes you think she´s singing with her dying breath. She takes risks when singing. A very underrated singer, IMHO. I suscribe all the above mentioned recommendations, starting with "Portrait of Sheila", of course, which is placed very high in my top-ten vocal discs list. Would also point out "Jazz child" and "The crossing". I feel I don´t own enough recordings of her...

I received "Masterpieces" and "Festival session" on Friday, but haven´t got time to listen to them properly during the weekend. Now I´m going through "Masterpieces" and it´s incredible! The coming of the LP era allowed Duke to recreate a bunch of his landmarks with extended arrangements. Beautiful! The sound is simply superb to these (non-audiophile) ears. And I really like Columbia/Legacy packaging for their reissues.

Duke: The Complete Works 1924-1947
EKE BBB replied to nmorin's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Thanks for the hints, guys. With my recent acquisitions, I´m in doubt about picking this box-set. There´s too much duplication in my Ellington collection. I shoud sit down calmly, peruse a good discography and compare it to my collection. It will take some time, I´m afraid... -

It was the same for me, Tom, but with cduniverse.com. This item was backordered for a couple of months, and finally I got tired and didn´t postpone the order anymore.
