I found "All for you" very refreshing when I first bought it, three or four years ago. Then I picked "Love scenes" (too much on the insipid ballad side) and "When I look in your eyes" (didn´t like the orchestral arrangements). And that´s when I stopped! I began feeling less and less interested on her music. Her voice is not specially expressive, but I don´t dislike it. Her piano playing is OK for me. BUT I COULDN´T HELP FEELING MORE AND MORE DISAPPOINTED EVERYTIME I LISTENED TO HER RECORDS ... anyway I still give a spin to "All for you" occasionally.

As far as I know, these are her only three albums: Evanescence (Enja 8048, 1992) Coming about (Enja 9069, 1995) and Allegresse (Enja 9393, 2000) reissued as Enja Justin Time 3306, 2003. Any comments?

Next wednesday, November 5, as one of most outstanding events in Emociona!!!Jazz, the fall Jazz Festival in Madrid. This Festival brings together some previous individual (and smaller) jazz festivals (CMU San Juan Evangelista, Festival de Jazz de Ciudad Lineal...). She´ll be conducting the Danish Radio Orchestra. I have her CD "Allegresse" and I find her orchestra one of the most interesting and innovative, nowadays. His sound is full of beautiful nuances and her pallette has a lot of tonalities. Any comments on her? Just can´t wait to see this concert!!! PS: I will post my impressions... FWIW

I can´t read a word in French but it sounds interesting... when we´re talking about Helen Merrill! I will pick it!

Thanks for the recs, ubu! Totally agree with Jaspar and Thomas: superb and highly underrated musicians. I was shocked when I heard "The real cat" when it came out. Since then Thomas is in my list of favorite guitarrists! I have "Jeux de quartes" and "Modern jazz au club st.-germain" by Jaspar and I enjoy them a lot! I also like his work with Chet Baker ("Somewhere over the rainbow" -Bluebird- is the one I´d pick!) and his playing on Wynton Kelly´s "Kelly blue". PS: I DO KNOW some day I will own the 101 CDs!

Re: Lou Bennett: He used to play regularly in Spain (Madrid, Barcelona, Salamanca). I saw him once (Salamanca, El Corrillo Club) a few years before his death in 1997. He was a good player and, from what I heard, a very nice human being.
