Abdullah Ibrahim solo It was an incredible concert, ubu! A hard one to listen, but incredible anyway. Two parts: the first one, 65 uninterrupted minutes of his music, fascinating music: repetitive melodic phrases, silences placed here and there to highlight this and that note, percussive left hand chords, waterfalls of notes with both hands... The second one consisted of 45 (as well uninterrumpted) minutes of the same thing but IMHO this one was a bit more monotonous. Maybe it was my ear, too tired because of this shocking experience!

Mosaic Box Sets are insanely expensive at some on-line retailers which usually sell at reasonable prices. A few examples with controtempojazz.com -Mildred Bailey (10CD) Mosaic site: 160 USD controtempojazz.com: 279 € -Bunny Berigan (7CD) Mosaic site: 119 USD controtempojazz.com: 195 € -Donal Byrd/Pepper Adams (4CD) Mosaic site: 64 USD controtempojazz.com: 111 € This means controtempojazz.com is charging almost 28€ per CD when Mosaic is selling them at 16/17 USD!!! And the Mosaic Selects are sold at controtempojazz.com for 62,47€ (21€ per CD), when Mosaic´s prices are 39USD (13€ per CD). This is not a taxes matter. We´re talkig about huge margins with this stuff!!!

Finally I bought my ticket for Ibrahim´s concert. Actually, I didn´t have to choose, as Moran´s was sold-out. Will post a few comments on this one!
-
BTW: I bought "Coming about" and I´m diggin´ it! Previously, I only had "Allegresse".

Five big for this BB, the administrators... and all the members around! Many thanks for this site, for the fun, for the knowledge. My wallet´s the only one not congratulating you

I´d like to take part in Blindfold Test #4 as well. I´m not sure if I´ll be able to contribute anything of interest (there are dozens of members who own much more knowledge on jazz than I do), but it´ll be fun, anyway. I could collaborate on CDR-ing and distributing in old Europe, if needed! Guess I should send my address to somebody.... Jim??? The main distributor in Europe???

I should listen to my records more carefully! Only listened to it once, but I didn´t notice this mistake.

How´s that one, brownie? I saw it on the fall TrueBlue Music catalogue. One of my undiscovered Columbia Monk discs!

I won´t say I was disappointed by the concert, but I was really caught unawares... just at the beginning. I attended the concert expecting to hear Maria Schneider arrangements, orchestation, full of nuances and subtleties... within the context of her own compositions (could we call this "contemporary orchestral jazz"???). And two surprises I receive (I hadn´t heard these were coming): -first of all, brazilian composer, pianist, singer and guitarist??? Ivan Lins. I think he ruled the roost: 9 out of the 10 songs were his compositions (if my memory serves me right); he sang in all of them; he played an electric piano which, IMO didn´t melt properly with the rest of the orchestra; even he was the one who presented each and every song, in an "improveable" Spanish. Not that I didn´t like his singing, it was OK, but it didn´t get me. His compositions were all latin tingled songs: some near bossa nova, some near samba (really an ancestry of samba, "lundu"???), some other brazilian rhythms. -the other GREAT surprise was all positive: the venerable granddad THOOTS THIELEMANS. I was really shocked by what he did with his harmonica. He responded (imitating, innovating and improvising) to all the rest of the instruments in an incredible way. I have some of his records, but never expected this wonderful playing live. And the Danish Radio Orchestra? Big sized. 20 members, appart from Maria/Ivan/Toots: 5 trumpets/fluggelhorns; 4 trombones (one of them bass trombone); one tuba; 5 reeds (all kind of saxes and flutes); bass (both accoustic and electric); accoustic piano; drums; percussion (conga and every kind of brazilian percussive instruments); guitar. Funny to hear a Danish Orchestra playing only latin music. Little room for soloing (except for Toots): a few bars for one of the trumpets, for a couple of trombones, for a tenor sax and for a flute.... and a rocky guitar solo by a guy very similar (his appearance, not his playing ) to René Thomas. Maria´s on stage presence was clearly overshadowed by the other two guys. She looked shy and very respectful for Toots and admirative for both Toots and Ivan Lins.

You´re right, brownie. The featured name was "Count Basie Reed and Brass Sections". They played : -All of Me -Ain´t Nobody´s Business If I Do -Lover Come Back To Me -My Man (Mon Homme) -Them There Eyes -Lover Man (Oh, Where Can You Be?)
-
Fantastic! This latest one is the best of all, IMO!

Besides Maria Schneider & the Danish Radio Orchestra (Nov, 5 - tonight!!!), these are the artists I´d like to see live from the Festival agenda: -Jason Moran & the Bandwagon (Nov 8, Saturday, 21:00, Clamores Jazz Club) -Abdullah Ibrahim solo (Nov 8, Saturday, 22:30, CMU San Juan Evangelista) -Abbey Lincoln (Nov 12, Wednesday, Colegio de Médicos) -Elvin Jones Jazz Machine (Nov 15, Saturday, Auditorio Conde Duque) What should I do on November 8??? Not possible to attend both concerts! Any additional comments on all these concerts? PS: Jan Garbarek, John Scofield, John Surman, Ravi Coltrane, Oregon, Enrico Pieranunzi, Chick Corea New Quartet, Cañizares&Rava + Vitous.... a lot of outstanding names are also featured in this Festival.

My mistake! I wanted to say Wardell Gray!

The Bechet is a good overview (from Clarence Williams group with Satchmo, to his Jelly Roll sides, Blue Note, RCA-Victor...). The Hawkins is a good chance to have some otherwise hard to find 40s sessions. I have the Anita O´Day as well. The Tristano, the Stitt and the Warne Marsh are on my wish list. Any tips on the Navarro? Many duplication with the Complete Fats Navarro-Tadd Dameron sessions? BTW: booklets are superb, with some interesting rare (or, at least, unknown for me) photos.

You mean this one, Chuck? looks good! ubu I will look for it. I love every Steeplechase date with Tete on it! Thanks for the information.

In his memoirs Basie mentions that, though BH was for almost a year touring with the band, she only recorded two sides with the orchestra (of course I know she recorded profusely with guys like Pres, Buck Clayton and Jo Jones, and with Count Basie and his Sextet, Count Basie and Brass Sections... but I mean the whole orchestra!!!). These two sides were recorded for air checks on 06/30/1937 (New York City- Savoy Ballroom (Harlem)-MBS Broadcast by WOR): "They can´t take that away" and "Swing brother swing" (Columbia CL 1759). A few more tracks were recorded that day (including Jimmy Rushing on vocals), but BH was not featured. Revising my BH discography, I found there´s another track BH recorded with CB Orchestra: "I can´t get started" (03/11/1937, Meadowbrook Lounge, Cedar Grove, NJ CBS Broadcast by WOR). Basie forgot it. I have a copy of The Complete BH on Columbia 1933-44 10CD box-set and these three sides are included of Disc 8. Wonderful music! It´s a shame they didn´t record together a lot more (due to label´s contractual matters, I guess). PS: you can fin these three tracks as well: -Masters of Jazz (vol.4: 1937) for the first two tracks and Masters of Jazz (vol.5: 1937-38) for the third one. and -The Complete Lady Day Box."B. H. Live and Private Recordings In Chronological Order" (CD1) BH was quickly replaced by Helen Humes when she left the band (Basie was "accused" to let her go. He states she went to "earn much more money"). Just wonderin´ what could´ve been a larger recording romance...

That´s the same I thought when I heard "Kenny Clarke´s sextet plays André Hodeir" (Jazz in Paris 39). BTW, a very good disc, revisiting classics written by Monk (3), Dameron, Ellington, Miles, Mulligan, Carter & Bags, plus three originals by Hodeir. Klook accompanied by Hubert Rostaing (as); Róger Guérin (t); Billy Byers (or Nat Peck) (tb); Armand Migiani (bs); Martial Solal (or René Urtreger) (p); Pierre Michelot (or Jean Warland) (B). All the arrangements by André Hodeir

On my car stereo: -Coltrane quartet plays -Buck Clayton´s All Stars, Copenhaguen (2CD) -Getz&Bonfa: Jazz samba encore! -Lockjaw Davis/Buddy Tate/Coleman Hawkins/Arnette Cobb: Very saxy -Miles Davis: In a silent way

I found "All for you" very refreshing when I first bought it, three or four years ago. Then I picked "Love scenes" (too much on the insipid ballad side) and "When I look in your eyes" (didn´t like the orchestral arrangements). And that´s when I stopped! I began feeling less and less interested on her music. Her voice is not specially expressive, but I don´t dislike it. Her piano playing is OK for me. BUT I COULDN´T HELP FEELING MORE AND MORE DISAPPOINTED EVERYTIME I LISTENED TO HER RECORDS ... anyway I still give a spin to "All for you" occasionally.

As far as I know, these are her only three albums: Evanescence (Enja 8048, 1992) Coming about (Enja 9069, 1995) and Allegresse (Enja 9393, 2000) reissued as Enja Justin Time 3306, 2003. Any comments?

Here´s a link to the Emociona!!!Jazz Festival

Next wednesday, November 5, as one of most outstanding events in Emociona!!!Jazz, the fall Jazz Festival in Madrid. This Festival brings together some previous individual (and smaller) jazz festivals (CMU San Juan Evangelista, Festival de Jazz de Ciudad Lineal...). She´ll be conducting the Danish Radio Orchestra. I have her CD "Allegresse" and I find her orchestra one of the most interesting and innovative, nowadays. His sound is full of beautiful nuances and her pallette has a lot of tonalities. Any comments on her? Just can´t wait to see this concert!!! PS: I will post my impressions... FWIW

I can´t read a word in French but it sounds interesting... when we´re talking about Helen Merrill! I will pick it!
