ubu: will check this as soon as possible (I don´t have these CDs here)

If you may find it, PICK Blues for myself (ENSAYO, 1977) with Eric Peter and Peer Wyboris. One of his best recordings ever!!! I think it´s been reissued on 2003.

Maybe this will help: TETE MONTOLIÚ, unsung heroe

Yeah, "Picasso", made for Norman Granz on 1948 (or was it 1949?) was a turning point. One of my favorite solo sax ever! Before this recording, Hawk made a previous attempt called "Hawk´s variations, part 1&2". You can find it in the Ocium release "The Hollywood sessions". Recording date is discussed: 1945 or 1947.

Good choice, brownie! One of my favorite Bud Powell discs. And the RVG is superb!

New Cotton Club set from Bear Family
EKE BBB replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
David: Are the commercial recordings from the Duke Ellington Orchestra included those recorded April 12, 1929 in New York (Liederkranz Hall) for RCA-Victor, originally issued as Pirate MPC-524, and included in the Bluebird reissue "Jungle nights in Harlem"? This is the line-up for that session: Duke Ellington & His Cotton Club Orchestra: Freddy Jenkins, Arthur Whetsel, Cootie Williams, t; Joe Nanton, tb; Barney Bigard, cl, ts; Johnny Hodges, as, ss, cl; Harry Carney, bs, cl, as; Duke Ellington, p; Fred Guy, bj; Wellman Braud, b; Sonny Greer, d; with Harmonica Charlie and comments by Irving Mills. -
Easy to get and cheap*: The complete 1936-51 small group sessions (2 box-sets, 4 CD each) on Blue Moon. Only small ensembles (except those with Billie Holiday -they put out another set of Complete Billie Holiday sessions-). Only master takes. Only studio recordings. Sound´s OK for me (I´m not an audiophile) but I don´t know which is the source for it. Poor booklet -if you can call it booklet-. In the discography-sessionography, there´s no reference to previous releases from other labels. They sell them as well as separate CDs: etc... B) But it smells like Definitive Records, doesn´t it? * sorry if you think this is for completists and not for newbies on Pres, but as it´s cheap and easily available... EDIT: ooops, I made some research on freshsoundrecords site and the box-sets are not available at this moment! And I found it on other on-line merchants... and it´s not so cheap. So, maybe it´s just a bargain at Spanish stores! I picked the two box-sets a year ago for only 50€ (in total).

I have 2 of the single CD releases (OJC reissue): "Sunday at the Village Vanguard" and "Waltz for Debbie". Sound´s OK for me. Let´s see if I pick "More from the Village Vanguard" or this 3CD-box set. SteepleChase dates from the 80's, 90's and 00's
EKE BBB replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Recommendations
Tete Montoliú: -Catalonian nights (vol. 1-3) 1980. Tete Montoliú trio with John Heard and Tootie Heath. -Boston concert (vol. 1-2) 1980. Tete Montoliú solo piano. These recordings are in my top-ten Tete. 1980 was a great year for recorded Tete! -
Abbey Lincoln (November, 12) Fabulous concert! A short one: about 65 minutes plus 3 bises (yeah, we got three bises from her). The public was totally devoted to her. Only nine songs, opening with a superb rendition of Hoagy Carmichael´s "Skylark" and ending with a beautiful "The nearness of you". In the middle, some hits she got in the last twenty years such as "Love is made" (from her last CD, "It´s me"), "The world is falling down", "Down here below", "Throw it away", "Through the years"... And she attempted "Somos novios" in Spanish. People got mad about it... though her pronuntiation was not very academic. I can´t understand those who argue that Abbey doesn´t swing. She may be 73 years old. Her voice´s not at the highest point, obviously. And yes, she went out of tune a couple of times... ...but it was a wonderful, sincere, relaxing concert! I dig her special phrasing, her diction, her strange intonation. The way she ends verses, like if the note was disappearing... She offers a different treatment for each song. Looks like she´s singing for herself. Capable rhythm section: Marc Cary on piano; Michael Bowie on bass; Jaz Sawyer on drums. They had a lot of room for soloing. Worth paying that 18€!!!!!

Duke: The Complete Works 1924-1947
EKE BBB replied to nmorin's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
For that price (90 $) I can stand it... -though the sound´s not the best available -though they miss a few tracks -though there´s a lot of duplication with my 31 CDs from that period! I pre-ordered it. -

One of my favorite recordings of this song: Oscar Peterson Trio (with Ed Thigpen and Ray Brown) There are two sessions included in this 1996 Verve reissue, one from 1959 and one from 1962. Can´t remember where´s "Waltz for Debbie".
