  1. Which hotel is that? There are/were welfare hotels in that area. Decently priced, if you don't mind the crack whores and junkies as neighbors. But hey, more money for used cds, right?
  2. WTF ?!
  3. Coltrane's manuscripts on eBay
  4. Sign me up for whatever you got coming up.
  5. Wherever you go, look out for Brownie!!! He will make you buy cds you don't even know existed, many many many cds.
  6. The best option is to hit your local liquor stores and get as many free wine cardboard boxes as you want, like the one below. They'll be happy to give 'em to you. Perfect fit for about 40-50 Lps. You won't be able to lift more and escape a hernia, anyway.
  7. I almost moved in that direction, but the dimensions of my listening room wouldn't permit the Expedit units, therefore I'm having a custom build storage 15 feet long and 7 feet high made by a professional cabinet maker. That should be enough for my records I hope.
  8. Are these 2 Ikea Expedit shelving units stacked next to each other?
  9. Guys, I'm not talking about now, I'm talking a year or two, when the i-pods will cost even less than they do now and digital downloads will probably be cheaper as well. Have a friend who sold off his entire cd collection [huge] after downloading it onto a server, wired and networked his house with in-ceiling speakers and laptops, and can play music/control playlists from every room in his house. Pretty cool and high-tech stuff; I'm not going this route, but many people will. So my bet is that the used cds will be half of today's price in 2 years. I could be wrong, but I don't think so.
  10. Seeing people unload large quantities of cds here and elsewhere and proliferation of services like the i-tunes, would you estimate that the prices on used cds are going to take a [dramatic] plunge in the near future? Niche markets, like Mosaic, excluded, of course.
  11. Well, "greatness" in art, of course, is subjective and in the eye of the beholder, but i would suggest that an Oscar is still a fair indicator that a film has both some artistic merit and achieved some degree of popularity and appeal, at least with a mainstream audience. By no means does it signify "best" except by a common poll, but I think it's a safe bet to assume that an Oscar nominated film is unlikely to be terrible and is likely to be better-than-average (individual biases aside of course). I beg to differ. Here's the list of the Oscar-nominated films. You decide whether they exhibit an amount of artistic merit larger than the films that were not even close to being nominated. 2000 - "GLADIATOR," "Chocolat," "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," "Erin Brockovich," "Traffic" 2001 "A BEAUTIFUL MIND," "Gosford Park," "In the Bedroom," "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring," "Moulin Rouge" 2002 "CHICAGO," "Gangs of New York," "The Hours," "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers," "The Pianist" 2003 "THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING," "Lost In Translation," "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World," "Mystic River," "Seabiscuit" 2004 "MILLION DOLLAR BABY," "The Aviator," "Finding Neverland," "Ray," "Sideways" 2005 "CRASH," "Brokeback Mountain," "Capote," "Good Night, and Good Luck," "Munich" [the best batch in the last 5 years, I think]. I dunno...
  12. I saw and liked the Crash. Haven't watched BBM yet. Oscar shmoscar. Is that even a measurement of a particular film's greatness any more?! Bonfire of the vanities...
  13. Nice. I've been on the fence about this one. Please tell me more about these Lps. How's the packaging, etc.? Nothiing special about the packaging. 3 of the 4 have very good sound. Thanks. I wonder if the cd box has any additional material...

  15. Totally missed this thread. Happy belated birthday, man! Pop your head out of the water once in a while, will ya?
  16. I'd call, but I'm afraid he'll want to bone me.
  17. Coupla more things - 1. Tony's wife's voice on the phone in the dream sequence is not Carmella's. It's Charmaine's. 2. Hotel sequence could be purgatory, or it could be that Tony entered the witness protection program in Arizona under the name Kevin Finnerty. BTW, that's where Sammy the Bull Gravano ended up. Carmella calls Tony "the Bull" repeatedly. 3. Tony spends this whole season in a coma and the war ensues. AJ takes a center stage and becomes the acting boss of the family. 3. Or it could be that I am full of shit, probably as much as we all are in respect to the predictions of what happens next in the show. I don't remember any one of us making any sense in the end.
  18. What is the proper title for this Joe Roland session on Bethlehem? It can't possibly be called the "Vibe Players Of Bethlehem, Volume 2" ...
  19. Saw this poster for sale, never heard of this guy. I'm not the biggest connoisseur of dixieland around here, thought maybe the cognoscenti might shed some light..
  20. Thank, Kinuta. I'll keep an eye out for the Teddy Charles disc. Got the personnel for the Joe Roland session - Joe Roland (vib) Dick Garcia (g) Freddie Redd (p) Dante Martucci (b) Ron Jefferson (d) This guy was good!!! I wonder what happened to him.
  21. More than one curious jazz fan has met his demise after scratching himself with a rusty Bill Evans box. One of the victims was the French composer Jean-Baptiste Lully.
  22. Now listening to the Joe Roland cd on Bethlehem, bizarely re-titled as Vibe Players Of Bethlehem, Volume 2. One of the less interesting re-issue jobs by Bethlehem, pretty lame liner notes, no personel listed, no recording dates, etc. But the music is as they say, FINE. I'm really digging this one a lot! It was a major discovery for me. I never heard of Joe Roland before. What was the original title of this LP? Any details on his career? This guy totally slipped under my radar.
  23. Congratulations, Comrade Ruster!
