  1. Saw this one today at the local used joint. 3 extended pieces with Henry Grimes and Klook. I was itching to buy it, but hid it int back of the pile instead, pending further info. How's the music, how's the sound quality?
  2. wolff, re:Buena Vista How do you rate the cd to the Lps? The most awesome unexpected reissue is Phineas Newborn - *Here is Phineas, The Piano Artistry of Phineas Newborn*, on Atlantic. This one is from 1986[!], released as #33 of the Atlantic Jazzlore series, whatever that is, 30 years after the original issue. The bad first - for some reason the cover is not original, it's a badly colored Chuck Stewart photo, neither are the record labels, furthermore the title is *The Piano Artistry of Phineas Newborn*, sans Here is ... , but the back cover has George Wein's original liners and also Dan Morgenstern's write-up. The good news - it sounds amazing, music is totally transformed by the way Newborn's piano comes out in the Mono[!] reissue. Thank god the reissue producer picked the Mono master, it is so much better than the stereo version of this record. Whoever Illhan Mimaroglu was, he produced a great-sounding reissue. Koch released the stereo cd that sounds bad, the Japanese had good sense to go mono with mini-lp version, but this Lp smokes them both in an understatement. I could never get into this one as much as the Contemporaries, because it sounded so muddy. You couldn't even hear Calvin Newborn. Now I can. Oscar Pettiford is practically resurrected. The whole band comes together because of the transformed sound. I bought mine for $3. You can too. It's a hidden gem.
  3. Tchaikovsky - Violin Concerto in D. Heifetz, Reiner, Chicago Symphony. Glorious! Little Red Shaded Dog sings crazy blues.
  4. Agreed 100%. It's all about individuality. Can't be an entitity without being one's self. I'll add Bill Evans to the list [along w/Trane and Bird one of the most influential "voices" on his instrument, especially stylistically]. How about a thread on people who don't have their own tone? That should be more interesting than pointing out the obvious titans.
  5. That qualifies as a "Good Find" Yes, unless MG stands for Maybe Good.
  6. Donald Byrd - Byrd's Eye View Alberta Hunter - Alberta Hunter With Lovie Austin And Her Blues Serenaders [kick ass music]
  7. This has got to be the ugliest, least cohesive sentence I've ever read on this board.
  8. Were the 2 alternate takes not issued on the Mosaic Candid Mingus LP set that were included in the Mosaic Candid Mingus CD set issued on the stand-alone Candid cds or the only way to get them is the Mosaic CD # 3 of the Complete Candid cd Mosaic?
  9. She couldn't get the monkey off her back?
  10. I saw a test pressing of one of the LPs in the Bitches Brew set, a thick heavy chunk of vinyl. Didn't buy it. Have you any? How do they sound? That's the first time I saw a Mosaic test press.
  11. "Lee Wiley Sings / Lennie Tristano Plays", Allegro 4049 This 10-incher is on eBay right now. Anyone know what the story is with this record? A compilation or is this a part of the Mosaic set somehow or is it still only available on this slab of vinyl? Coincidentally, what other stuff was released on Allegro?
  12. I caught that gig a couple of years ago. Make sure to come 2 hours before the scheduled start time. That's no joke. Place will be packed. Personally, I'm all calypsoed out on Sonny. Too bad I couldn't make that Jimmy Scott-Ahmad Jamal gig last Friday. We had our place painted. Oy.
  13. Thanks, lads. She's quite a little manipulator. I think she'll be a famous actress one day. We all think our children are the most beautiful kids in the whole wide world, and you know what - we are right.
  14. Elizaveta Leedia will be 2 in September.
  15. Indeed. $167.50 for a 12lp set is a very good price. Wish I saw that one...
  16. Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All-Stars, Vol.6 [bob Cooper continues to surprise me. In a good way.] Joe Albany - The Proto-Bopper Pearl Bailey - Saint Louis Blues
  17. I am seriously thinking of going. It would be my first visit there. Finding a hotel must be a killer this time of year though.
  18. My take - $. In some cases $$$[i.e. Hodges].
  19. It was in a review of the Transition Sessions Connoisseur on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...685500?v=glance
  20. Thanks for the scan, Jim. Now I know what it looks like. Here's a quote I found regarding the label and its labels. "...I remember the original LP's on the Transition label. Produced by a small-budget company in Boston's Harvard Square, they were issued in plain cardboard sleeves with all of the liner notes included in a booklet insert (I've got the LP's but the booklets have long since disappeared--as have the round labels, which must have been attached to the vinyl with LePage's school paste)...."
  21. Well, duuh. I have these - BN 52438 Louis Smith: Here Comes Louis Smith BN 84437 Paul Chambers: Chambers' Music DD 411 Sun Ra: Sun Song DD 414 Sun Ra: Sound Of Joy Looks like Transition sold their masters piece-meal. I had no idea that Byrd Conn 2fer was in existance. That's what the sheltered existance of a vinyl freak does. I better pick it up. Thanks for the link, Lon.
  22. I recently got a Toshiba-EMI LP of Byrd's Eye View on Transition/Blue Note and realized I know nothing about the Transition label except that it was based in Boston. I guess at some point Blue Note acquired it. I assume this cover was a later addition, because it looks like a Reid Miles job. Unfortunately my place is being painted at the moment and I have no access to the Goldmine book. Can anyone shed the light on the Transition label? I couldn't find the discography on the web. A scan ot two of what their record labels looked like would be nice too.
