  1. I decided to have some fun with this guy. The $8 admission fee was paid, after all. Cesar, Either prove that the item was sent or you must return $7.98 to my PayPal account. I never received the item you claimed to have sent. I know your name is Cesar Barreto, your address is 405 S Federal Hwy POMPANO BEACH, FL 33062 and your telephone # is 954-783-0871 If you don't refund the money to my PayPal account by tomorrow I will file a claim with the Internet Fraud Complaint Center (IFCC) which is part of the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) as well as with the Pompano Beach Police Department. Have a nice day, Dmitry
  2. Well, it appears that this photo will remain a mystery. The ebay seller I bought it from isn't a registered member any more and I'm out of $8. PayPal won't do anything, since the transaction is over 30 days old, and eBay won't do anything because he's no longer registered. I did get his phone # through eBay though. I'm thinking let the sleeping dogs lie for $8. What would you do?
  3. Boy, after reading some of the posts I really felt almost ashamed.....not really, naah. Soulstation, save the tooth. If your doc says prognosis is good after treatment, save it. Make up a payment plan with his manager, so you can have some breathing room on payments. I'll keep watching from the sidelines.

    Jimmy Scott

Little Jimmy is one of those artists who you must see live to understand what they're about. His gigs are something else. I hope to make it on Friday. Another crazy commute from Brooklyn.

When will that be? I'd like to see that gig as well.
  6. Looks like it's missing some bars. Better inquire with the seller.
  7. Yes, it's a very nice imaginative session, imo. Noted is the presence of underrecorded bassist Bob Nieske. I'd pick it up.
  8. This is not just crazy. It's f@#$%ing crazy. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...ssPageName=WDVW
  9. A short report. A lot, and I mean a lot of 78s, including the BN 12" and some other rare stuff, even some Edison cylinders. There was a sole Japanese buyer present, which tells me the fair is a well-hidden secret. Some hard-core collectors[i.e. freaks] were rubbing shoulders. The emphasis was on the pre-bop jazz, but I managed to pick up a heavy bunch of LPs and some cds[Rahsaan's Mercury box for $50 and Keith Jarrett's Impulse! 73-74 box for $10 are good buys methinks]. At 33 I was probably the youngest person there and some older sellers took to the kid. He he. A lot of OJC vinyl for $3-$5 and a lot of generally mild-priced 70s-80s stuff. I actually found this fair to be more to my liking than the semi-annual WFMU gargantuan gathering because the only commodity was jazz and almost nothing else. No waste of time looking for jazz records, since jazz was what it was all about. Whoever is into pre-1945 jazz MUST attend. There were whole boxes of records of just Teagarden, just Duke, not to mention the biggest collection of Zoot Sims in the Western hemisphere. There was also a sense of community, which isn't the case at the WFMU. My deal of the day was Shelly Manne's L'il Abner original Contemporary M/M- mono for $5, but there were others. Noone was giving away BN 10"s, like brownie describes, but I will be back next year. Well worth the crazy commute and the even crazier return during the peak Friday hour on the NJ Turnpike.
  10. Phineas Newborn, Jr. - Solo Piano Wonderful record, a document really, Newborn's only solo LP, but a strange recording quality-wise. Piano almost sounds like a harpsichord, teeny and percussive, with constricted lower register, unlike the superb recordings Newborn did for Contemporary. Too bad. It could've been glorious.
  11. Thanks for the discographical info, Mike.
  12. Haven't seen this one before. Any idea of the source and vintage? Record co. promo, just a poster, ...? No markings on it, btw.
  13. I'll say hello to Red for you, Ron. Thanks for the heads-up. Wish you could've made it. Perhaps next year! Rest that back!
  14. Here are the scans of the front and back cover of my "other" Connection soundtrack LP. This one is a Cecil Payne record on Charlie Parker Records, taped in March of 1962. Compositions by Payne and Kenny Drew. Personnel is listed on the back cover. Don't know if this one's on cd [remember reading something about Fresh Sounds coupling it w/something else]. Anyhow, very good hard bop album, with Payne and Clark Terry doing most of the soloing. Probably one of the earlier appearances of Ron Carter on record as well. Side A is all Payne compositions, Side B is Kenny Drew, who's not on this Lp. Duke Jordan is on the keys. Check out the front cover. Cool graphic design of the stylized syringe. I like this cover better than the BN Connection.
  15. I've told the story before, but to amplify this comment, I'll tell it again. Somewhere around 1976 or so, I went to see Ray Charles at the Lonhorn Ballroom here in Dallas. It was a full 4 hour gig, and there was nobody else on the bill, so Ray's orchestra, a full sized big band, served as one of the "opening acts" and did a full hour set by themselves. Coincidentally, I have a 1970 Ray Charles Orchestra LP titled My Kinda Jazz, and Sidewinder closes Side 1. No personnel listed. Just played it. Damn, the orchestra sounds prime. Does anyone have the personnel listing? Some major soul-infused solos there. Something tells me Quincy Jones was involved.
  16. Joe Henderson in Japan. I forgot what a wonderful record it was. Wonder if the rest of the material from that tour will ever be issued. Joe was phenomenal. Say what you want about the Japanese rhythm sections, but this band was killin'.
  17. Please post your impressions of the music on this cd. I'm interested to hear what you have to say about it. Kind of on the fence about getting it, not being a real big fan of the mid-60s Sonny and all...
  18. Why am I mot surprised you've been there, Guy? Your reminscence is enough to persuade me to go there. Mental note to self - hit the ATM Thursday night.
  19. This Fri-Sat at the Holiday Inn, 4701 Stelton Rd in South Plainfield, NJ. Admission $20 for both days. 908.753.5500 This is the first time I'm hearing of this gathering. Has anyone gone before and if so, was it worth it? Since it's a 2 day thing, I reckon it must be good. I'm tempted to go on Friday. 30 miles from Brooklyn translates in roughly 60-90 minutes driving. Oy vey.
  20. Great stuff, Claude! Thanks. I will take some color photos of the labels and post them here tonight, hopefully.
  21. When did the black label with the red Impulse! logo and the "Product of ABC Records" make its appearance? My guess - early to mid-70s.
  22. XRCD is great stuff. It's the next best thing to vinyl, imo. I have 7 or 8 of these, and would've had way more had I not been hooked on vinyl.
  23. Alan Simon - Rainsplash, on Cadence. interesting coupling of Debussy's Reflets Dans L'eau and Lush Life, as well as a beautiful 10+ min. tribute to Herbie's Speak Like a Child. For $2 it's a keeper. Wayne Shorter - Moto Grosso Feio. Holy S#%t !!! I love it.
  24. Another lacklustre Final match... Where were Kafu, Roberto Carlos, Ronaldo?
