  1. When the heck was that era. I never encountered it. Well, sales for one: cassettes were out selling records. I was somewhat tongue in cheek there, because I didn't know any audiophiles back then! But the humble cassette for a long time was out selling vinyl and there was a lot of rubbish pressings in the 80s, remember how flexible Virgin pressing were? K7s are almost certainly STILL outselling vinyl worldwide. The size of the African markets in number of units (not value of sales) is effin' enormous. I don't doubt that's true of other 3rd world regions. MG

  6. Unca Marvy's R&B page is, really, the fount of (a lot of) knowledge about R&B groups of the fifties. It's one I've referred to frequently. It was there in March, when I was doing some research on the Clovers for my BFT, but disappeared early this month. After some googling, I found the new address. It's http://www.uncamarvy.com/ MG
  7. I lost Unca Marvy's R&B page and, after a bit of googling, found its new address this morning. One thing I hadn't looked at before is the page discussing his 1950 wire recorder, so I thought y'all would be interested. http://www.uncamarvy.com/OtherNeatStuff/Wire/wire.html MG
  8. More classics Ray Charles - Yes indeed - Atlantic (WEA France) MG
  9. natural gas powered??? Don't tell the Montreal Protocol police. My Zerostat pistol from 1978 is still going strong ! No, it's electric. We got a new one when we moved here in 2005, but the old one is still going and in use in the garage. MG
  10. A love supreme - Impulse (MCA) Listening to Doug Carn's 'Infant eyes' has pushed me back to this (not that I was ever really away, but...) MG
  11. A Philips fridge/freezer that we bought when we moved to Cardiff in 1974. MG
  12. NIce article. Great record company; but perhaps not the oldest indie. Savoy started in 1939 and still exists as part of Malaco (though I haven't seen new albums for 3-4 years). Asch started in 1944 and Folkways is in existence as part of the Smithsonian Inst and is stil recording. Circle was started by Rudi Blesh in 1946 and appears still to be part of GHB. Don't know whether new recordings are being made. But Delmark is the oldest that's never changed ownership, because the founder hasn't died yet. But happy birthday to Delmark, whatever. MG
  13. Johnny Otis - Back to jazz - Jazz World MG
  14. I haven't mastered streaming yet; may I have a download? MG
  15. The cassette is still probably about 50% of the West African market; though most things seem to be coming out on CD as well, now. I have about 60 feet of 'em. MG
  16. Roger the Lodger Henry Cabot Lodge A E Houseman
  17. Can't read the sleeve, but I'll take your word for it MG
  18. And now for something completely different Michael Edwardes - The orchid house: splendours and miseries of the kingdom of Oudh 1927-1857 The runup to the Indian Mutiny. MG
