Oh I did. Particularly in the very early sixties. Getting friendly with the staff (especially the young girl who worked in Boyd's of Bond Street) was the way to get information. That particular young lady got me the Cash Box top 100 every week and let me know which recordings were about to come out over here, so I could order them. But I never got to go out with her There was a great Jazz/Blues/Folk specialist shop called Studio 4 in The Lanes, Brighton, run by a vibes player called Ken Bryant. All the local jazz musicians used to hang there. The shop was next door to a cafe and, for regulars, he'd send his young lady staff out to get us a cuppa, when he felt like one. Eventually (about 1966, I think), he left his wife, took a powder, and slipped away to Spain with his young lady, where he became a bus driver. Derek Stuart-Baxter, a critic for Jazz Journal, ran the jazz section of Wickham, Kimber and Oakley, in George Street, Hove; another source of good info and bad opinions, until we converted him to Grant Green. He wrote a very good piece on GG in the JJ called 'Green is beautiful', when that album came out. Same went, later, for Sound Advice, Castle Arcade, Cardiff, the jazz section of which was run by the secretary of the Welsh Jazz Society. And Spillers has lasted since 1894 because the shop has consistently had a policy of employing staff who actually knew a thing or two about different types of music and could talk intelligently about it to the customers. Today's post Guelewar - Touki ba Banjul; acid trip from Banjul to Dakar - Kindred Spirits Compilation drawn from the 4 LPs the band made between 1976 and 1980, 3 of which were from tapes stolen from the band. As a fully qualified Moussa Ngom freak, I'm very pleased with this stuff, which is very early Mbalax. It's strange that Gambian bands were ahead of the Senegalese bands in developing Mbalax. MG

Yesterday evening, listened to my newie Kansas City Melodyaires - Softly the night is falling - Songbird (That's my copy in the pic.) Somewhat scuffed but plays fine. And is terrific! This morning Arnett Cobb - Is back - Progressive Good morning music. MG

Today's deliveries Le Mystere Jazz de Tombouctou - Le Mystere Jazz de Tombouctou - Mali Kunkan (Kindred Spirits) Fabulous rare Mali Kunkan material from 1977, recently reissued on CD and LP by Kindred Spirits - and many thanks to Stefan Wood for posting his acquisition of the album here! Kansas City Melodyaires - Softly the night is falling - Songbird (Green label, as illustrated) The title track is the most beautiful gospel record I've ever heard - it was included in a Peacock/Songbird comp issued here in 1969 by Island. And the KC Melodyaires (later known as Mildred Clark & the Melodyaires) are one of my favourite groups of the sixties and later periods. A snip (as far as I'm concerned) on e-bay at $29 from a guy living in Olathe, KS. MG MG

Not just that..but take notes, and compile a dictionary as you go along. After soon enough, new language. New language, new sounds, new sounds, new life. Or at least different. Either way - best...Christmas....EVER!!!! That sent me back to one of my favourite comedy books It's a dictionary of words that don't exist for things that do exist but don't have words for them - the words given are railway stations around the world. eg Amlwch - A British Rail sandwich which has been kept soft by being regularly washed and resealed in clingfilm. Peoria - The fear of peeling too few potatoes. Klosters - The little drops of dried urine on the rim of the bowl under the seat. MG
