I just found out about this album here http://barin99.livejournal.com/350447.html According to the blog referenced above, it features Joe Sample, Stix Hooper, Arthur Adams, and David T. Walker of the Crusaders. It says it was recorded in 1975, though the headline gives 1974. She was recording for Syliphone at this time, however; her last single for Syliphone, Malcolm X/Malaika, SYL565, issued in 1974 and her last LP for the label, Myriam Makeba et Bongi, SLP48, issued in 1975. From the cover illustrated, this appears to have been issued in France by Sonodisc on the Esperance label. However it was also issued by EMI in South Africa on the Black Music label. Anyone any ideas about when and where it was recorded and if there was a US issue? MG

Funny no one's mentioned the Billy Eckstine band of early 1945. Fats Navarro, Shorty McConnell, Gail Brockman, Boonie Hazel, Gerald Valentine, Taswell Baird, Howard Scott, Chips Outcalt, Budd Johnson, Sonny Stitt, Dexter Gordon, Gene Ammons, Leo Parker (Jesus!!!), John Malachi, Connie Wainwright, Tommy Potter, Art Blakey. There were several Gene Ammons albums recorded, while Jug was contracted to Prestige, for Chess in the period Aug 1961 - May 1962. Here's a list of what I know about: Dig him (with S Stitt) - Argo 697 (Aug 61) (reissued on Prestige as 'We'll be together again' PR7606 (OJC701)) Just Jug - Argo 698 (Aug 61) (reissued on Prestige as 'Live in Chicago' PR7495 (OJC395)) Blue groove - Unissued (Apr 62) (first issue in 1982 on Prestige MPP2514 - not reissued on CD) Preachin' - unissued on Argo (May 62) (first issue on Prestige 7270 (OJC792)) Jug & Dodo - unissued on Argo (May 62) (first issue on Prestige PRLP24021 (PRCD24021)) There was also a 45 recorded for Chess - I can't stop loving you/My babe (May 62) (issued in the 'Soul jazz giants' anthology and on CD in 'Legends of acid jazz' PR24188) In addition, he made 'official' dates for Verve with Sonny Stitt (2), and one for PJ with Groove Holmes. Also an 'unofficial' one for Winley with Howard McGhee (which Chess seem to have acquired and reissued on Argo). I've read in one of the post prison sleeve notes (I think) that Jug often corresponded with Bobby Weinstock, wanting to be assured that there were still unissued albums in the can which could serve to keep his memory alive with the public until he was released, so it looks like Weinstock was well motivated to grab what he could. Why he didn't get the Winley album I don't know. MG

When I try to post images, I've been doing what I always used to do: so I should get a pic. But what I get is: http://www.propermusic.com/cache/images/6/d/d/6ddf55f4c38b32a63ca1fcb5ca3f0c3c.jpg and when I paste the address, it comes out underlined in blue, so you can click on it and go to the image. Which isn't what used to happen. Is it because I have to pick some different option in the new forum for the browser I'm using (IE9), or something like that? The [ imgs ] don't come out even when they're separated from the text inside. I don't get this. MG

Album Covers w/ people in white sports cars
The Magnificent Goldberg replied to Jim R's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Goodness, 'British TV singing sensation' is an extraordinary hype! I couldn't remember her from the early 60s (or earlier), so I did a quick search. Most of her recordings seemed to have been done in the early fifties (one of which was a cover of 'How much is that doggie in the window'), when she also appeared in the Goon Show and in one Goon film. In the early 60s, she was on Juke Box Jury a couple of times. MG -
What vinyl are you spinning right now??
The Magnificent Goldberg replied to wolff's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
Great first line - 'I'm in a phone booth, baby, and your number's written up on the wall' Does that mean the same thing in the US as over here - prossies put their numbers in phone booths, advertising 'French lessons'? The CD I have of the album is on Stax, but I note that it was recorded long after the Stax days; Jan 1984. So it was originally issued on Fantasy? I never knew that. Don't know the Al Grey. I haven't been as assiduous in collecting his material as, perhaps, I should have been. I do know 'Cherry'; nice album, though the tracks are a bit short for stretching out. Now playing Lionel Hampton - Off into a black thing - Brunswick MG -

Long engagements at a club.

Further, as people moved out into the suburbs, the drive to a club downtown became a chore, particularly if you wanted a drink there and wanted to park your car securely. But the club round the corner might have had a disco... MG -

I'm sure you can work that one out yourself, Jim. It works in playing sax, as well as in drawing something, and at the atomic level, too. MG -
