  1. Pucho & the Latin Soul Brothers - Yaina - Right On (Cubop) with bonus disc Cover by Ronnie Braithwaite, founder of Grandassa Models. MG
  2. I'm in need of a good Swingtime set; but I want it with the four tracks he cut in Florida, before he went to the west coast. The new box doesn't have them. MG
  3. Fela Kuti - Authority stealing - Kalakuta (includes Fela's publication 'YAP news' Extra ordinary issue, July 1980) MG
  4. I see the Graniad hasn't inproved its spelling 'brieze block' Er... MG
  5. Ronnie's released some records, too, I believe. Also the Blue Note Club And back to seriously - Antone's - the Austin, Tx blues club had its own label. Called Antones. MG
  6. I shouldn't be reading this yet, as my copy has to swim the Atlantic Glad it's open, though. MG
  7. The complete Chuck WIllis 1951-1957 - Okeh & Atlantic (JSP) Is the Freddie Jackson who ran Chuck's band the same as Fred Jackson, who later worked with Lloyd Price, John Patton & Baby Face Willette? MG
  8. The two Baby Face Willettes are MUCH better than the Blue Notes in my view. (Plug plug, do I get commission, baby? ) MG
  9. Perhaps it has the John Lewis / Bill Perkins alternative takes MG
  10. Are you saying the music itself was sub-par or unworthy. Not my experience with hearing some of these sessions. Nor mine; all the BJ albums I've got are ones I like very much: Chester Thompson - Powerhouse Rudy Johnson - Spring rain Rudy Johnson - Second coming Walter Bishop - Coral keys Gene Russell - New direction Gene Russell - Talk to my lady MG
  11. Spent the whole morning (and will spend a lot of this afternoon) with Sonny Stitt - Complete Roost studio sessions - Mosaic This is REALLY NICE music! MG
  12. I remember Ornette Coleman's 'The shape of jazz to come' as being rather serene. But I flogged it in 1968. Been thinking of getting it again, though. Fred Anderson is another whose music seems very serene to me, at least on the few I have of his, particularly 'Duets 2000', Will try that AEC that Chuck recommended. MG
  13. Not too good. I'll send some more. MG
  14. This afternoon Johnny Lytle - Blue vibes - Jazzland (Orpheum stereo) Cedar Walton - Firm roots - Muse Teddy Edwards - Teddy's ready - Contemporary (yellow label, so it must be Fantasy) MG
  15. You'll just have to listen to the next one instead. Are You Glad To Be In America. RSJ and Grant Calvin Weston, two for the price of one. The Rough Trade one is a better mix than the Artist's House release though. And it's mastered by the legendary Porky Peckham - Britain's own post-punk Rudy Van-Gelder. Incidentally TOCB has a VanGelder stamp in the dead wax I never looked at the Waymon Reed, because it wasn't recorded by RVG. I just did and found that it does have 'VAN GELDER' in the dead wax. And in doing all this, I discovered, after decades of happy use, that the gatefold sleeve is AMBIDEXTROUS!!!!! Now replaced the LP in the right hand opening. MG
  16. Mine's on the way from CD Universe (who charge less for foreign post, or something). Slow boat from Chicago, or something. MG
  17. Today's vinyl, so far Ray Charles Blues - Swingtime (Ember UK) Ray Charles - Collection - Swingtime (Jazz Star UK) (no image of this real cheapo LP) Albert Collins - Don't lose your cool - Alligator (Sonet UK) New Jersey Mass Choir - Live at the Ritz - Savoy MG
  18. Been listening to Milt Buckner's early stuff and decided that I needed a chunk of Van 'Piano Man' Walls, so I'm playing this Fank Culley - Rock & roll - Atlantic (Official) Great stuff! Randy Weston takes over from Van for the last 2 cuts. MG
  19. Yes, I've also got the gatefold LP. I think all the Artists House LPs had booklets - someone will correct me if I'm wrong. Maybe we both got pressings from that day when Stevie at the factory was hung over. I've got the Waymon Reed, '46th & 8th', which does have a booklet The gatefold is left-handed, the record is in the left hand side, when you open it in a normal manner. Are all Artist House LPs like that? MG
  20. This afternoon, decided to play the other Buckner/Tate. Milt Buckner & Buddy Tate - Crazy rhythm - Black & Blue then, to keep the Texas thing goin' - Amos Milburn - Just one more drink - Aladdin (Route 66) Amos Milburn - Chicken Shack boogie - Aladdin (Pathe Marconi) MG
  21. Oh shit. I didn't see this thread before and, reading it, was pleased that he seemed to have been getting over his stroke... then this. I hope that bad things don't come in threes for him; these two are quite bad enough. Impossible not to like Mr Rainey. I saw him a few years ago at Ronnies, with Cornell Dupree, Les McCann & Ronnie Cuber. MG
  22. Now Milt Buckner - Them there eyes - Black & Blue (Belter, Spain) MG
  23. This afternoon and early evening Florida Mass Choir - Come let's reason together - Savoy (twofer) Roberta Flack - Oasis - Atlantic (Teldec Germany) MG
  24. What about Christmas carols? I'm in please, Jim, for a DL. MG
