I don't care if there is a band called the Mekons; I always think of "MAUDE SENIOR, ANGUS, MP AND THEN BARON. PRIVATE SCHOOL, OXBRIDGE, TORY PARTY. KNOWN AS THE MEKON BECAUSE OF HIS HEAD AND BECAUSE HE WAS AN UTTERLY HORRIBLE, SELFISH, OVERBEARING TORY BASTARD. ONE OF WHISKEY MAGGIE'S GUTLESS, GRASPING, PINSTRIPE SPIVS. DEAD, NOW, PRAISE GOD, AND ROASTING IN HELL." (http://mrishmael.blogspot.co.uk/2010/10/all-tories-are-bastards.html) MG

What vinyl are you spinning right now??
The Magnificent Goldberg replied to wolff's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
I got 'Rippin' & runnin'' when it came out and was disappointed in it. Playing earlier Shirley Scott - Drag 'em out - Prestige (blue label) Shirley usually recorded with bass players, though there are several LPs where you can see she didn't need to. But this one, with Major Holley, is wonderful and Major H really adds value. Now ALbert COllins - Don't lose your cool - Alligator (Sonet UK) Next Milt Jackson/Ray Brown etc Montreux '77 - Pablo Live (UK) MG -

Now where in the name of Hell did you get that from in the UK? MG Went to Whitby for a day with the family and on the way up to the Abbey poppd in a little record shop called 'Folk Devils' - which had quite a nice selection of records but this one stood out. I think the man at the counter was as surprised as me when I bought it! WHITBY!!!!!! I don't think any American members of the board would understand that. WHITBY!!!!!! (with Whitby Abbey in background) NOW IT CAN BE TOLD! MG -
Carl Davis, music producer of “The Chicago Sound”
The Magnificent Goldberg replied to rostasi's topic in Artists
I keep getting Carl Davis mixed up with Roquel 'Billy' Davis, who was Berry Gordy's original partner (co-writer of 'Lonely teardrops' etc), but who left to go to Chess. Shame there wasn't a photo of him. He also produced Young-Holt Unlimited for Brunswick (Carl, that is). MG -

Les McCann - invitation to openness (1972)
The Magnificent Goldberg replied to slide_advantage_redoux's topic in Artists
I kind of like this album occasionaly. It's not vintage McCann, but it's interesting. I wouldn't know about the Miles Davis influence; you may be right, but the man who infuenced McCann a lot in the seventies was Stevie Wonder and I can hear some of those ideas in 'The lovers'. Not so much in the two tracks on side 2, they're more like the regular Les McCann. MG -

Another trip to Cardiff, to get my tickets for gay Paree. A couple of weeks ago, I passed up the chance to get this in Kelly's: Earl Hines - Tour de force - Black Lion and the following day, Jim Sangrey and Larry Kart were going over the top about the LP, and I kicked meself for not getting it. Well, they're never there when you go back for them, are they? This one was, and in fine nick for a fiver! Just listening to it now. It seems MUCH more accessible than the title would suggest. Yet another demonstration of the fact that the skill of a great popular musician lies in being able to get through to people who haven't the education to appreciate his skills. Really glad I got this. And thanks to Jim and Larry. MG -
Good one, Dan. MG

Rhymes with Payton. Always wondered about that. Thanks. Reading this because I always wanted to know how to pronounce the name of the owner of Hi Records - Joe Cuoghi. Is it Kwoffee? Kwoguy? Kwoggy? MG In Italy it would be coo-oggy. Ah, I wondered where the name came from. Thanks Bill. Can't always tell with Italian, anyway. In my youth I had an Italian mate called Pier-Giorgio Kubanski. MG

This afternoon Charles Davis - Super 80 - Nilva I feel like I've been listening to 'Hi fly' all bloody day. It was on the Philly Joe LP I played this morning, then on the Cannonball in San Francisco CD I played just after lunch, then on this!!! Lonesome Sundown - Been gone too long - Joliet (P-Vine) Albert Collins - Don't lose your cool - Alligator (Sonet UK) Interesting choices of material in both those LPs. COllins does Oscar Brown Jr's 'But I was cool' and Sundown does WIlliam Bell's 'You don't miss your water'. Now Johnny Lytle - Swingin' at the Gate - Pacific Jazz (bad runoff groove on side 2. Must catch it before the stylus hits the label!!!) MG -

GREAT album..... living with that one since 8 years old. Yes, I'm really enjoying it. Very nearly pristine, after a bit of buffing with a Parostatik. Very glad I got it. MG One of the few Pablo's worth keeping. That whole Montreux '77 series pretty much, (I have 9 of them) is solid. The Bags/Ray Brown session has 2 additional tracks: "Thats The Way It Is" issued on the OJC CD of the album, and "Red Top" issued on the "Jam Sessions: Montreux '77" so unless you have those, MG you may wanna be on the look out for. "Oscar Peterson Jam: Montreux '77" I recommend also. Can't say I'm too keen on OP. Nor Norman Granz - just pick up the odd thing that takes my fancy. MG
