  3. That was a Liberty era re-pressing with different sleeve art. I've got a couple of them - there was one of the Bennie Green's in this style too, plus the original of Grant Green 'Carryin' On'. And Lou Donaldson's "Everything I play is funky", Blue Mitchell's "Heads up", BJP's "Accent on the blues", and more that I can't be asked to think of. MG
  4. Johnny Lytle - Moon child - Jazzland (black label) MG
  5. Yes - McKinney's Cotton Pickers was a wonderful band. On the revivalist side, I have a couple of the albums Chris Albertson produced for Riverside under the collective title of "New Orleans: the living legends". These are very nice indeed - was just playing one this morning - "Jim Robinson's New Orleans Band". I reckon any of those you get you won't regret. Here's Chris talking about making those albums - http://stomp-off.blogspot.com/2009/11/new-orleans-1961.html MG
  6. And I've noticed that lots of hardcore jazz fans don't particularly like vocalists, so many might not know the words. MG
  7. I'm very glad to hear you're nearly back to normal. MG

  11. In Britain, and maybe elsewhere, between 1960, when I started work, and 2003, when I retired, the price of beer rose seven times faster than the price of albums (full price, new, normal retail). So if you want to beat inflation, drink a lot of beer, and quickly MG
  12. Someone ought to have rewritten every word of every song by Horace Silver (but left the music alone, of course). Teddy Edwards could have made a superb job of it. MG
  13. Unless you're trying to buy every Hank Mobley original pressing - see Chewy's thread MG
  14. I'd been feeling that I hadn't been keeping up with kora players, so I had a quick flick through Amazon UK a few days back and found a few. The first three turned up this morning. Dembo Konte & Kausu Kouyate - Kairaba jabi This is a reissue of their LP "Simbomba", with another LP's worth of material, some recorded the year before and not released, one done in the nineties. Astounded to see this reissue had been around for over a decade without me noticing it. The bonus material is well up to scratch. Toumani Diabate - The Mande variations Issued last year. Very beautiful. But... Amadu Bansang Jobarteh - Tabara When I played this one after the Toumani Diabate, the difference was even more pronounced than the comparison between the two versions of "Ancient strings". Toumani is an artist; he even invented a new way of tuning the kora. Amadu (Toumani's uncle - brother of Sidiki Diabate) is a worker. His job is to show his people the greatness of their society. His music is majestic; overwhelming. MG
  15. If you won't go broke, you seem to have it under control. Keep that attitude, when the kids come along, and you won't go far wrong. You may need a bigger house, though Oh, and once you start getting into the different kinds of music from Africa, you're in deep shit! Jazz is a very limited kind of music to follow, in terms of how big your collection can be. MG
  16. If you do a search in those Bilboards where you were finding all that stuff about legal actions re Crown, I bet you could find adverts from Plastylite listing eminent (satisfied) customers. MG

  23. MG I thought that might catch your eye. I inadvertently ordered two of this if you can believe it! Anyway, the cities are Pikine, a suburb of Dakar, Winterveld on the outskirts of Pretoria, Doula, Cameroon, and then African immigrants in Jeddah, Saudia Arabia. The focus is on informal work practices in African cities. You were right! PM on the way. MG
