  1. It wasn't a comeback album. The real comeback was in 1983, when the band reformed to play at Sunsplash, Montego Bay. They cut the live album "Stretching out" (ROIR) in June and July of that year, as part of the runup/rehearsals for that gig and the subsequent London Sunsplash. One of the Sunsplash gigs was recorded but I don't know which, and they also made a studio album for Island "Return of the big guns" in 1984. SUbsequently, they moved operations to the US and recorded "Ska voovee" for Shanachie in 1992/93 (there's no recording date on the sleeve). (Just so's you know ) MG
  2. I've been meaning to investigate Bob Wills. Thanks very much for including this one. MG
  3. Ray Anthony wasn't a bad guess for #1, then. You could have posted the different sections as successive posts in one thread. I suspect it would be a good idea for us to merge these threads into disc 1 and disc 2 threads. I'll be happy to do that later. MG

  6. How would you organise an auction, with this kind of money at stake, without ebay? MG
  7. I know nothing about these Vogue picture disc but it seems to me that a) not many people collect this stuff; b) someone with a collection this huge must be well known in the community of collectors; and c) the seller probably knows most of the other potential buyers well too. So I guess he has some kind of handle on what this is likely to fetch. Amazing! How long 'til the bidding ends? Ah, nearly 2 days. I won't start biting my nails yet MG

  9. I will, yes. Some wonderful insights and suggestions there. The difficult part is narrowing things down to a manageable size -- which I may not have succeeded in doing. But I'm looking forward to each of these. I keep meaning to mention the Cab Calloway JSP box (vol 1 1930-35), but I see you've got the Missourians, which is what the band was called in the twenties. Most interested to hear your views on that. MG

  12. I don't - I listen to crap all the time. Oh surely not! Seems to me they're both alternative ways of carrying on politics. MG
  13. I did a search and found it. I see why I never heard of him, now - he was an East African specialist. Clearly did a lot of good stuff. RIP. MG
  14. I've never heard of him, and your link brought up obits of ten other people, Paul. Who was he? MG
  15. Quite right, too: Organissimo have made the definitive version of that one. MG
  16. I'd like to get a new Christmas album this year. But I can't think of any that are around that I want. So I started thinking about ones that AREN'T around that I want - because they haven't been recorded (yet). And here are the musicians I hope will release a Christmas album next November. Fred Wesley - I think Fred could make a very partying kind of Christmas album. And I think plenty of people would buy it. Bernard Purdie - a bit more partying, I guess. Junior Mance - I think Junior could make a good album of well played Christmas songs that would last the whole year through. Gene Ludwig - are you out there, Gene? MG
  17. Hellfire!!!! Glad this thread got bumped - never heard of that one before! "Oof!" "Wee!" "Pow!" any other titles? MG Well, still glad this got bumped again 'Cos I still haven't got this one! Must be more assiduous. Anyway, I keep forgtting about this gem, which I love, but don't get off the shelf enough. Milt with Sweets, Jaws and Cleanhead, with Hillery, Marable and Brown. Some very dirty playing here. MG
  18. Somewhat more significantly, he also a partner in the Keen label, which issued Sam Cooke's first secular hit, "You send me". MG
  19. No, the last new Blue Note album was issued in 1980 - Horace Silver's "Silver 'n strings play the music of the spheres" LWB1033, recorded November 1978 and October & November 1979. But the LT series (Rainbow sleeves) of BN issues of stuff not previously issued continued until 1981 at least - Donald Byrd's "The creeper" came out in 1981. Subsequent releases on the BN LT series were from PJ or UA sources. Applause was part of Capitol. Quite a few BNs were issued on that label - all but 3 of the 22 issues were BN reissues. BN wouldn't have made great albums in the early eighties - they didn't have anyone there who was capable of producing great albums. (Personally, I'd have said they still didn't when the firm was resurrecteed in 1985.) MG
