  1. Someone notes on the favourite Hubbard sides thread that he was always there when history was being made. "Takin' off"; "Out to lunch"; "Free jazz"; "Ascension". Probably not a coincidence. Although his "blatant sell out moments" are generally the ones I like best, I think I value the stuff I like less, just as much, though a lot of it isn't usually my cup of tea. When I'm in the mood for it, Freddie does it like no one else. RIP MG
  2. Damn! Forgot "Sugar", "True blue" and "Free jazz"! MG

  7. Can't say Freddie was one of my favourite trumpet players but there are a few of his albums I like a lot. "Backlash" and "Life flight" are probably my favourites, with "A soul experiment" and "Hubbard & Turrentine in concert" arriving shortly afterwards. "Open sesame" gets a lot of plays here, but because of Tina Brooks. I think I prefer some of the stuff he's done as a sideman - in particular his work on Charles Earland's "Leaving this planet", Dexter Gordon's "Clubhouse", Mobley's "Turnaround" and Hancock's "Maiden voyage". 17. So intonation problems means "out of tune"? I thought it meant that you got the tone - the sound - wrong; like when a guitarist doesn't finger the frets right and gets a buzzing sound from the string vibrating against the fret. So what's that sort of problem called, then? MG
