  1. I didn't know the Latin Jazz Quintet made an album with Dolphy. Can't say I'm keen on him, but I might be interested in getting this separately, as I like the LJQ a lot. What's the original title and issue of this one, please? MG The Latin Jazz Quintet With Eric Dolphy Eric Dolphy (as, bcl, fl) Carlie Simons (vib) Gene Casey (p) Bill Ellington (b) Manny Ramos (d, tim) Juan Amalbert (cga) Rudy Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, NJ, August 19, 1960 2408 Sunday Go Meetin' New Jazz NJLP 8251 2409 First Bass Line - 2410 Mambo Ricci - 2411 Blues In 6/8 - 2412 Spring Is Here - 2413 Caribe - * The Latin Jazz Quintet/Eric Dolphy - Caribe (New Jazz NJLP 8251; Fantasy OJCCD 819-2) = Eric Dolphy - Caribe (Prestige MPP 2503) For me, this session is a bit of a snoozer, though. Well... But thanks very much Zed. MG
  2. I heard that story, too. I doubt the truth, also. But it's a good story. MG
  3. BillF's mention of Violet Elizabeth Bott made me think about this while I was out having a cough and drag. I read mostly schoolboy stories - "Teddy Lester's schooldays"; the Just William books by Richmal Crompton; Enid Blyton's Secret Seven and Famous five books. Then I graduated to "Tom Brown's schooldays"; "Treasure Island"; "20,000 leagues under the sea" and similar stuff. (But I really couldn't get into "Rob Roy", which put me off Scott forever.) Then I read books about explorers and was keen on polar expedition books and books about faraway places. What I had NO interest in (until I became a father) was books about anthropomorphic animals, or kids with strange powers. So "Wind in the willows", the Beatrix Potter books and the Pooh books, or "Peter Pan" and so on were really off the agenda. I just wanted to read books about ordinary kids. MG

  14. I've just been listening to this LP, which I bought in 1977, when it came out. It was a real disapointment at the time, and I haven't played it much. But today it's REALLY COMING THROUGH! Stu gardner is the leader. Lots of overtly funky arrangements and a decent brass section. Only on the last track on side two does the band let it rip and get into a real jazz groove. I bought it because the tenor soloist on most tracks is Rudy Johnson - who used to be in the Hank Marr band, at the same time as Rusty Bryant; then with Jimmy McGriff; and in the early seventies did a few things for Black Jazz. Many will find it a bit smooth. I see that Bill Cosby was Music Consultant, which will no doubt put even more off. And that's what put me off for thirty years. But, despite a backing that is an open invitation to phone it in, pretty well all the way through, Rudy Johnson is really playing some very tough shit. If you can find this LP, it should be cheap, because who the hell has heard of this band? MG

  18. Have you ever had the opportunity to see "Playboy's Penthouse," circa 1960? It was a short-lived variety show that is on DVD (in the US, at least). It's interesting to see Heff during that period and trying to reconcile him with the guy now hanging around all those frightening bags of protoplasm. Never heard of it. MG
