  1. Yes, it is very counter-productive trying to solve a real problem by wrong methods. MG

  3. I used to have a tube amp in the sixties But nowadays, I just get a cheap black box. If, in forty years of listening, I hadn't (consciously) noticed that "Sunkenfoal" on "All the gin is gone" is the same tune as "Mad lad" on "Space flight"... MG
  4. I'm not really familiar with the benefits of credit unions. What are they? Guy Two really, I think. First, they're run as co-operatives, so the profits (if any) can be returned to the investors (rather than a bank's shareholders) as dividends. Second, and probably more important from the financial education point of view, they're community based. Over here they're run by volunteers who are usually active in the community in other ways. Unfortunately, that also means that they're not run as efficiently or as effectively as they might be. That limits the numbers of people who choose to use them. How to bridge the gap, retaining the community basis but improving the operational aspects, is a serious problem here. MG
  5. Thanks Porcy. Didn't think of switching the wall sockets - tried that but no good. Looks like I'm in the market for a new amp. And one of the K7 decks bust a year ago, so I'm now looking to replace that at the same time. MG If I understood the buzz is there even if there is no imput (TT or CD) hooked on the amp, even if the volume knob is on 0? That's right. MG
  6. If you're not worried about it being invisible, it can be sewn. But I think you probably need someone who specialises in repairs to horse gear, like saddles. MG
  7. Did Helen Keane also manage Art Farmer? She's listed as producer of some of his albums. MG
  8. Yes, "Mad lad" and "Sunkenfoal" are the same tune. Funny, I've had these albums since the year dot and never noticed! MG
  9. The Four Seasons Johnny Winter Donna Summer
  10. Thanks Bertrand. I'll report back. MG
  11. So "moderators" don't tell us they edited their posts! I thought that when you did that, the fact that you'd done it was noted by the system automatically. In fact, I know that's happened every other time I've edited a post. Maybe it didn't happen this time because I didn't change any words, just hit the "return" key several times. Interesting. No. When a moderator edits one of his posts, there's an option that you have to positively select by ticking a box to put the same kind of "edited on" statement that appears automatically on everyone else's edited posts. I suspect that, in the big world of forums (fora), there are reasons which may be something to do with moderators having the ability to edit others' posts - without this being known, unless the moderator wishes. And yes, efore you ask, it's dead easy for a moderator to edit someone else's post. I nearly did once, when I hit the edit button instead of reply. And it all looks nearly the same... MG

  14. My amp started emitting a low frequency buzz just now, at the end of an Albert Collins CD - but I don't think it was his fault. It does it even when there's nothing on. It's coming out of both speakers, so I assume it's an amp problem. I tried jiggling the wires at the back, to no effect. Anyone got any ideas about what usually causes this sort of thing? It's pretty old and gets used a lot. Is it dying? MG
  15. John De Ath (family butchers) John Fahey Souleymane Faye
  16. OK - let's have another go at this. Which tunes do you think are the same, Bertrand? (I think I'll give both a spin later, see if I can pick one up, but I've heard both albums lots and never noticed. Most of "Space flight" are blues, and so are most of the cuts on "Gin". So...) MG
  17. Thanks! Damn fine album that! I got it a few months ago. MG
  18. Oh, and while we're on the subject, here are today's first quarter profits for BP and Shell. Ref http://uk.news.yahoo.com/pressass/20080429...ts-6323e80.html MG
  19. Same here, but they haven't given up that mission - trouble is, no effin' customers, because they're seen as low quality. MG
  20. I don't remember this thread, which might have been before I joined the board. I tried a search based on "+lazar +forrest" which only brought up a few posts in which both names were used, none of them what you want. I think there's an archive of threads somewhere, where this stuff may be, but I don't know how to access it. MG
  21. I've got a strong feeling you're right on this Allen. Carter may have had good intentions... MG
  22. Nice to see you and me on the same side About seven years ago I got Gordon Brown down to a conference my Scottish opposite number and I were putting together on financial exclusion. He was very committed to the idea of financial education, but nothing came of it at that time; Treasury officials shat on it. In the US, you do have the benefit of a very healthy Credit Union movement - ours over here is even lamer than the proverbial duck. The contribution they can make is certainly unrealised over here - don't know about over there. MG
