  1. Actually MG, do you think your wife might be able to locate the Green Acid tapes for us? Nobody else seems to be having any luck. Ha ha. If she did, she'd burn them. MG
  2. Which you couldn't really apply to Herman. Was Percy blind, by the way? I never heard that. MG
  3. I like the Johnny Otis version, from the Arhoolie album "Spirit of the black territory bands", which I think uses all the old stock arrangements that used to circulate. But he does the tune as a "medley" with "You're driving me crazy"; I don't know if THAT was the way the territory bands played it MG
  4. Don't know. I just picked up the references from the Piliso sleeve note. Did you try searching for the album titles? MG
  5. That's damn cheap ! Minimum I've seen round here is £1.03 a litre, which equates to about £4.60 a gallon, ie. a socking $9.75 a gallon There were 'plans' by the Government to add another 2p per litre tax in todays budget but looks like they might defer it. Maybe they think they will have another fuel mutiny on their hands. Around here minimum is £1.039. But where you have to go to get that price, you might as well pay the average of £1.069 and save your petrol. MG
  6. Very interesting article, Randaljazz - thanks. I was particularly struck by There's no doubt that this stuff is meeting a true NEED in people. Big breaks for Chuck Nessa! MG
  7. I thought Hayward was white... (His hands look white on the sleeve posted above.) MG
  8. Thanks for posting those links - my guess is that the AJP version of "Sip 'n fly" is not the original 1954 version. But it should be well worth getting. I'll send in a new order when my order from Ghana turns up MG
  9. Jesse Hill Alan-a-Dale Lester Flatt
  10. Yes, it's a pity the search function doesn't work for artists. I started out just browsing the site. The sleeve notes to the Bra Ntemi CDs mention a number which were going to feature in my next order. The Movers - Repeat after me - Gallo CDGB50 (this has the cover version of "Mannenburg" I quoted about above) Masilela & The Movers - Bump Jive - Gallo CDBG51 Lulu Masilela & Thomas Phale - Cool down - Gallo CDBG42 There's another Ntemi Piliso CD called "at Teal" something. Maybe a search for "Teal" will turn it up. I can't remember what it was I put in to reveal that one. Maybe it just came up while I was browsing. Those are 1976 recordings. Perhaps a search for "Teal 1976" might do the trick. It's probably also worth doing a search for "sip 'n fly", which was a title of a Ntemi session in 1954, at which he and Masilela were the only youngsters - everyone else was a veteran. It was a band Ntemi put together called the Alexandra All Stars (sometimes spelt "Alaxander"). This surely must have some historically pretty significant players on it. It was a big hit, so may be on CD. MG
  11. They are WILD! Mostly very UP-tempos! And THE perfect Bop organ trio. And a great audience. I have 6 of the 8 tracks on a cheapo comp, so I'm really looking forward to getting these RVGs. Gonna give that comp one last shot before I get the newies! MG
  12. WTF???? Because of the nature of the business I am in, my telephone starts to ring early in the morning, no matter where I am. So, it's just always made more sense to come into the office first thing when the crews are starting the day. The sucky part is I don't always go to sleep as early as I should. That is when the daily nap becomes your friend. When I was at work, I used to find that twenty minutes kip after breakfast stopped me falling asleep at work. MG
  13. Slick Jones (what a fabulous name! Just saw it on the Hampton box!) Jo Jones Philly Joe Jones
  14. I seem to recall that Funky 16 corners had it on their site a few years ago. I think I listened to it in the library, before I was on line at home. MG
  15. Earl Van Riper & Marcus Belgrave - Detroit's grand piano man - Parkwood orig Gene Ammons - Blue Gene - OJC Harold Ashby & Paul Gonsalves - Two from Duke - Columbia Lansdowne series (mono) MG
  16. Sokay for Blue Note (only up to a point) but have you tried finding a Prestige or Riverside sleeve there? They're there, mostly, I think. MG
  17. I couldn't even find the thread. Can you post a link to it please? I need to update the discography anyway, so I could upload a new version. MG
  18. Lionel Hampton Rev J M Gates The Great Gates (http://www.acerecords.co.uk/content.php?page_id=59&release=4478) MG
  19. Hm, the comments on the RVG make me wonder if I should get it - I only have the McMaster edition. I like this album a lot - about as much as "Goin' west" - but it's far from my favourite GG - I'm not really any too keen on Herbie Hancock. But the bonus track of "Deep river" is really beautiful - much more so than the rest of the album, and one of the most feelingful GG performances. MG
  20. There's some discussion of Earland's two LPs for Choice here http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=30487 Jim, I put a discography of Earland up in a thread nearly two years ago, but I can't find it now. Any ideas what's happened to it? MG
  21. Have a real good one, FFA MG
  22. Not bad here, either - and the maps on the TV forecast this morning showed that we were right in it. I wonder if this is a case of 1986 having too much of an impact, such that forecasters are now inclined to say things will be a lot worse than they turn out to be. Crying wolf is as bad as underestimating the severity of a storm. I wonder how good American forecasters are at predicting the severity of storms? MG
