Bob Porter Reviews Kool And The Gang

The number of times I've wished I was living in the US in those days... It's the right time AND the right place! MG -
Concord is a ninth (or nineteenth) class jazz label. So what else is new? I guess I'd better read the Concord sale thread... Still a few Fantasy Prestiges I want. MG

Just found this thread! Overwhelmed! I'm back (until the next time). (I pissin' well 'ate it when machinery doesn't work properly!) MG

Three very nice CDs turned up from Ghana lunchtime They're all by HipLife rapper Tic-tac Masom was his first, in 2001 Masem was his second, in 2002 Wope was his fourth, in 2004. Interesting to get three at once. He developed away from his primary influence, Busta Rhymes, towards a much more Ghanaian style by 2004. I think I'll get a few more of his if (I can find them) in a while. MG -

Most people - oops, most critics weren't getting this material. Porter, of course, was DEEP into it from the word go! I like Porter, but there's a slight conflict of interest here for a reviewer - note how he gives a sly plug for the band he was producing, Funk Inc. But what he said was, and still is, right. MG -
Don't you mean Major Holley and Slam Stewart? MG

Yeah - had some connection problems (not my end), but it's been all right since yesterday afternoon. Trouble with free broadband is, when it's not there, you don't get a refund! MG

And isn't Granville sometimes referred to as Granville "Mickey" Hogan? MG That's funny. Drummer Mickey Roker's real first name is Granville. Perhaps I was getting them mixed up MG

Been rereading Basil Davidson's "History of West Africa 1000-1800". Good overview which is used in Anglophone West African countries as school text book. MG -

Yeah, we vote on the Government every five years, or so. The theory - and I think it's correct - is that a government should have an integrated tax strategy, which includes different kinds of tax to raise the revenue it thinks it requires. Different mixes of taxes have different effects - on each other and on the behaviour of businesses and individuals. Letting people vote on individual elements in the mix - and people would vote their pockets, of course - risks generating all kinds of counter-productive behaviour that runs against what the government - with the people's consent - is trying to do. That's the theory - it isn't quite as neat as that in practice. MG Doesn't the budget have to be approved by Parliament anyway? If so I don't see what Berigan finds to be objectionable. Guy Parliament votes on expenditure - and crawls over whichever items it feels like. But they don't, as far as I've ever heard, vote on proposals for raising money; unless those proposals involve new legislation, which is unusual (but not unheard of) - most tax changes simply change the rates at which a tax is levied and don't require a new Act of Parliament. In any case, what Berigan was talking about (I think) is the notion that specific proposals (including taxes) have to be voted on by the public as part of an election process - other boxes to tick on the voting paper or something. Isn't that the system over there? (sorry to be so slow - connection problems) MG -

I think so. The only track they got down in one take was "The thang". "Rev Moses" took 7. But if you take those seven out, they got the other five done in 11 takes, which is pretty good, really, I should think. MG -

Yep. And recording "One cylinder" first really shows where the priorities for that album were. Freddie McCoy, though he's now underrated, was the leader of the Acid Jazz movement (though it didn't have that name yet) at that time (well, there was virtually only his band in it). The first three tracks were all in the Acid Jazz groove. The other three were much more the sort of thing that Lou had been doing for some time - he'd done "The thang" on "Fried Buzzard" a few years before and I would be surprised if "I want a little girl" hadn't been a regular part of his book for years. And "Rev Moses" is kind of a Horace Silver type number, and not unrelated to "Good gracious" and "Signiyin'". MG -

MG, For you to have even conceived of that idea, the news media in Great Britain must be astonishingly different than the media in the United States. It's not the news media; it's the people who went in to rescue her. The news media wouldn't have got to hear about it if those people hadn't spread it about. In their line of work, I'd have expected discretion. MG

That's damn cheap ! Minimum I've seen round here is £1.03 a litre, which equates to about £4.60 a gallon, ie. a socking $9.75 a gallon There were 'plans' by the Government to add another 2p per litre tax in todays budget but looks like they might defer it. Maybe they think they will have another fuel mutiny on their hands. So, you guys don't vote on tax increases, they are just added to the budget????? Yeah, we vote on the Government every five years, or so. Don't know. I just picked up the references from the Piliso sleeve note. Did you try searching for the album titles? MG Yup - maybe you'll be luckier than me, post the link in case, please! Perhaps those are out of print. I'll give it a go, when I look back in there. MG

Well, this is a question asked long ago (and Jim never did answer) but having acquired most of their collaborations recently, I'm curious where this one appeared. I've got it on a Capitol LP - The Dudes Doin' Business Capitol ST-569 If you thought that getting to hear Junior Parker singing "The Inner Light" (yeah, the George Harrison/Beatles sitar-laden song about TM) was a thing that would never happen in your lifetime, guess again. It was reissued on Groove Merchant with the title "Good things don't happen every day". That will be easier to get hold of, I suspect. Never even knew about the Capitol issue MG
