  1. Indeed. You'd have thought there would be N Frank Wolff photos of Horace knocking about. MG
  2. And, speaking of the West Coast - Pee Wee Crayton. MG
  3. A couple of months ago, I got a cheap 20 track comp of Reed's early VJ material; from"High and lonesome" to "You got me dizzy". I'm not familiar with his discography, but this comp seemed to go up to 1956. The CD is called "Ain't that lovin' you baby" and is on the Blue Label label , apparently a subsidiary of a German company SPV. The packaging on these Blue Label jobs is crap and there is no discographical information. But the sleeve notes, by Neil Slavin, are as good as you'd expect him to produce. The company has put out a series of these compilations. I would expect another Jimmy Reed in a couple of years, taking things up to 1959. MG
  4. Please add me in Sir! PM on way. MG
  5. Thanks Lon. Seems there's only one CD issue of this material RCA Bluebird 66158-2. Anyone know the title? MG
  6. Wot, no mention of Jimmy Reed? MG
  7. What I've always wondered is why Ray Charles' performance wasn't included. Anyone know? MG
  8. But if you haven't got a stupid question, or are too stupid to think one up, here's where you can come, or go, or not, as the case may (or may not) be. MG
  9. Dood grief! I didn't know Jug recorded with Basie! What album is that material on please? MG
  10. That is one hell of an interesting compilation, Chris! I never saw it before. Some of the unlikely ones have been reissued - I greatly admire your selection of "Fifteen minute intermission" rather than more obvious Cab material. MG
  11. That was a very popular LP - made #5 on the pop charts! MG
  12. What's the weather like in late September early October? MG
  13. Glad you bumped this. I like Herbie Mann's Soul Jazz stuff. "Deep pocket" is one of my favourites. Also, "Mississippi gambler". I intend to get more. I don't hear ANY rock tunes on these albums - only Soul tunes (or, in the case of "Satisfaction", imitation Soul tunes). One of the things that really impressed me was that, when Mann died, David Newman described him as the best boss he'd ever had. MG
  14. Very nice site Porcy. I've never been to Italy but this looks a seriously good way. Two points. Your family needs to police the B&B links. There's a place in Tuscany which has very cheap prices - it's a 2002 price list! Gives a poor impression. Second, personally, I'd find it helpful if there was something to indicate how easy it is to get around an area using public transport (I don't drive). MG
  15. I think samplers/cheapo compilations can be useful in encouraging you to stick your toe in the water. I got a few cheapos of Jelly Roll Morton, Chick Webb, Count Basie and Lionel Hampton about 18 months ago and the Hampton was really an earful - without it, I wouldn't have bought the Mosaic box in December. And I've decided to get a box of Morton, too. MG
  16. Party time - have a good one. MG
  17. Robin Batman Alfred Pennyworth
  18. Played my two newies from Bert's yesterday, while my connection was fucked Odell Brown & the Organisers - Ducky - Cadet orig Charles Earland - Charles Earland - Trip reissue of "Freakin' off" on Big Chance. Some also previously issued by Giant Steps. Sound is really crap. I think it would be worth paying for an original. MG
  19. And it's a "good morning" from me, too. MG
  20. No, it's Ham And Eggs. Or Pound Cake. Ah, but would it be too one-sided in concentrating on gret recordings at the expense of lesser material and even crap? I'd not buy it if that were the case. I want the crap too - actually, in particular, I think. MG
  21. No. They're people - some are fictional. Maldoror was the "hero" of a novel by Isidore Ducasse, writing under the pen name of Comte de Lautreamont, another fictional character. The thread is interpreted broadly and includes bands (and even Amazon.com! ) But it is sometimes interesting to know what the connections are. There's a thread for answers but it's fallen into desuetude. MG
  22. The only one I'd be interested in buying is Isaac Hayes' "Hot buttered soul" - but I've already got it But, for its purpose, it looks like a good idea. Just not an idea for us, unless we have a bird to whom we want to give some music with an ulterior message of an ulterior motive. And what's wrong with that? MG
  23. Naiga and Malga are typos for Boncana Maiga What's the connection with Amazon? Is there a river Malga? Maldoror Isidore Lucien Ducasse Comte de Lautreamont
  24. Pamphile da Souza Cheikh Smith Boncana Maiga (all arrangers)
  25. Got a couple of funky LPS from Bertshop today. and Charles Earland - Trip (no image on web) This is, I think, material recorded for the Giant Step label, some of which appeared on the LP "Introducing George Freeman with Charlie Earland sitting in" - but I haven't been able to compare the two LPs track by track. The condition is not bad - a bit of a scratch on side 2, otherwise fine - but the sound is fuckin' awful. Nothing to do with the previous owners, or the masters (the Freeman sounds fine) - it's Trip's fault. Still... HOT MUSIC! MG
