  2. Cole Porter's "Why shouldn't I". I'd go for Chris Connor's version on Bethlehem myself. But the words are absolutely right. Everyone will be crying buckets. And it's slow; you can just stand there and sway. MG

  9. It doesn't seem to work the other way round, however. A while back, I said that we ought to defrost the old freezer, in the garage, which doesn't do itself, so we should try to run the contents down. But after every week's shopping, there'd be more to go in there! We managed to do it last week, by using almost everything over Christmas! MG

  11. No database is going to solve all of the conceptual problems involved in recording a big record collection. I use MS Access, part of the MS Office suite, because it's a relational database that I used occasionally at work and I understand relational databases better than things someone else has made up for me. (Access has a bitch report writer, but that's OK, because I don't use it.) But, for example, the database can't tell me how many African records I've got. Because there's no such thing, conceptually, as an African record; people are African; and some of them make records. So each artist is classified to nationality. But a record like "Music of many colours" by Fela Kuti and Roy Ayers shows up in a query of records by Africans, and also in a query of records by Americans. And a record like "Euleuk sibir", by Youssou Ndour and Omar Pene, shows up twice under records by Africans. You also have to take a decision about whether you're recording the physical record you've got or the album. If, for example, you have a BN orig DG mono copy, and a Liberty stereo, a McMaster CD and an RVG, as well as the same material in a Mosaic box, are you going to record all those different issues? I don't. I just record the album; the format is simply an annotation against the purchase record, the latest of which is incorporated into the main record for the album. But I'm not terribly interested in the quality of sound, so the edition isn't a big issue for me. But whichever way you go, conceptual problems are going to arise. The important thing, before you do anything with a software package of any kind, is to play with a sample of your data MANUALLY for a while, so you know you understand its quirks and what it is you hope you can get out of it. MG
  12. SPOT ON! and a lovely database - now if only i can find a program for windows that is user friendly!! It would seem Catraxx is the thing for you. I love this program, but it takes time to input everything. There was some discussion, two/three years ago, on AAJ about this. Catraxx was discussed, as well as something else, I forget what, but which allowed you to pick up data from the Internet and slide it into your database. There are errors - the data is only what various people have put in - but if 80% is correct, then the correction job isn't too bad. Do you remember this discussion Words? MG

  14. I think there definitely is a West Indies connection there. Castro Destroyer, Under Fire and Sakwabaman are all the sort of names you might find Reggae toasters of the eighties using. And the similarity to soca seems there, too. One thing I like about this stuff is, they're sampling Hip Hop beats, and turning them into something else. So Hip Hop is already old school. MG
  15. Silverman is a female standup comic[seriously potty-mouth hilarious]. She made a video with Matt Damon(a movie actor/star) to worry her husband(Kimmel). She sings about fucking Matt Damon, You got the rest. Thanks Mo. Only part of the hilarity stems from actually knowing who they are, as you say. MG

  17. Yes! Ah, very interesting. Do you know what it's like, Mike? MG
  18. It's hilarious, though I don't know who either of those guys is. MG

  20. Waterboarding??? Bah, the stuff of rank amateurs!!! Though I have noted that certain methods favored in the Lubyanka (how I miss its rigorous, character-building environs!!!) seem to have been taken up by the security chieftains of this great land. Yes, how you lambasted and demonized us for such tactics, but we were merely trying to show you the way!!! And what did we get for our troubles??? Ongoing barrages of Stinger missiles. A fine way of demonstrating gratitude!!! But past grievances aside, don't you think that perhaps you and I should pay this AAJ camp a visit, Mein Freund??? Only severe doses of humor, sternly administered, can cure what ails them!!! :rsmile: Just go and steal their smilies! MG
  21. I've been discovering Hiplife music - new stuff from Ghana this afternoon. Thought I'd start a separate thread. http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...c=39361&hl= MG
  22. Yes, but I'm not sure how reliable it is. There's a link to the Hiplife bluffer's guide on that page. I went through it and picked out VIP as being a likely contender based on what they'd said and found myself a few samples. I don't usually bother with samples but with a new kind of music, well. VIP aren't nearly as interesting as Castro Destroyer, who doesn't get a mention in the blog. There's a Ghanaian on line shop in Britain which sells loads of this stuff. Has a list of 211 Hiplife albums on sale (not all in stock). $18.50 per CD to the US + postage. They're here. http://www.ghana.co.uk/shop/index.asp Just noticed Castro Destroyer's second album was called "Back and front". MG
  23. How can you resist a guy with a name like Castro Destroyer? I've spent a nice day looking into Hiplife music, which is a combination of Hip Hop and Highlife that has developed in recent years in Ghana. So here's a nice little video from Castro Destroyer. Castro Destroyer's real name is Theophilus Tagoe. He also works under the names of Under Fire and Sakwabaman. He's made two albums, so far - "Toffee" - the video is the title track - and "Back and forth". His latest album is apparently going to be Gospel. THAT should be interesting! I've found somewhere to buy "Toffee", so watch this space! MG
  24. It was down yesterday morning and, this morning, all the little orange squares by the threads that take you to the last unread post have been disappearing in the last half hour or so... MG
