Breaking up is hard to do or The meaning of the blues

Got to say, I prefer Etta's a bit, but that's a very nice performance, as one would expect, Duaneiac. Do you know what album it's from? And does ANYONE know why there's a photo of Barbra Streisand on a Dinah Washington vid? MG -

OK, so you don't know any slow ballad vocal versions apart from Etta Jones'. Nor do I. MG -

I haven't really dug Lonnie's Palmetto and Pilgrimage albums all that much, but I think I'll probably go for this. He is still the only performer who's made me actually scream at a gig. MG -

I've got lots of Dex, but no Steeplechase material. I've only ever bought two Steeplechase albums - Red Holloway and Teddy Edwards - because, seemed to me, the owners were too much bebop/hard bop fans for my taste. I've got a good many versions of 'Just friends', but only one vocal version. I do have Houston Person's version, with Buddy Tate and Nat Simkins. Not a burner, of course, but quite a sprightly, medium up approach. Nothing like Etta's. Do you know any other vocal versions? MG -

Breaking up is hard to do or The meaning of the blues

I don't have the Cecil Taylor album with Trane or the two Steeplechase albums by Dex. I just can't be asked to listen to Dex with those too-boppy rhythm sections. Any other non-burning instrumental versions you know of? That's not to say I don't like it as a burner; it's great played that way, just inappropriate for the words. So, in the end, I think that might qualify it for being a bad song But Etta's version... Phew! MG -
Strange as it may seem, my Dutch Uncle was Dutch - the husband of my Mum's best friend. He had a big moustache and drank Heineken. He was guide for American tourist coach trips across Europe ('If it's Tuesday, this must be Belgium'). Eventually, he went into politics and became a local government councillor - independent, because he thought parties were rubbish; that competitive election manifestos were a means of increasing public spending, as parties had to make promises and the winners had to fulfil some of them. (It's very hard to cut public spending; very easy to increase it.) VERY intelligent guy! MG https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_uncle

Which version of 'Just friends'? Most versions I've heard of the song have been burners - it IS a good number for a burn up. Only Etta Jones, with strings, Joe Wilder and a nice sax section, arranged by Oliver Nelson, really gets that song defined, as far as I know. MG -

No, but I've got a lot of past And actually, the one I've picked isn't a tear jerker at all. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5b0MJzXEo6s Fats Domino - I'm in love again. I heard this early in 1956, around the time it came out; I was 12. It was the first Rock n Roll I'd ever heard and, as music it made a big impact on me. I didn't reckon Elvis Presley nearly as much as everyone else, when I head him, because Fats just HAD something. I fell in love in 1957. She was the best friend of the girl downstairs of my stepfather's stepfather, and I went there for the summer holidays. Whoo! And yeah, it hurt when, on the next holiday, she wouldn't see me. But I thought about Fats' song and realised that, because I went to a boys only school, I knew very few girls of my own age: a few of my mates had sisters; I knew a few from the Judean club; and those two in Sussex. So I got it that, as I got to know more girls, I'd almost certainly fall in love again. And, of course, that's what happened; what happens to ALL of us, as time passes, unless we're misanthropists. And personally, I think it's great. I've never fallen OUT of love with any of them. (I've probably got good taste ) Well, why should I? Who loses if I'm still in love with a lot of ladies in my past? Certainly not my wife (and we've been together 44 years). Would I have realised this if I didn't know and love that Fats Domino song? Well, eventually, I guess. But the song was there and that's what happened. MG -
OK, here's one - T-Town blues Harold Bruce, Walter Miller (tp) Parker Berry, Mitchell "Bootie" Wood (tb) Luther West, Harold "Geezil" Minerve (as) Elon Watkins (ts) Leroy "Tex" Cooper (bar) Charles Sherril (p) Butch Lockett (g) Robert "Brooks" Lewis (b) Al Duncan (d) Teddy Cole (vcl) Linden, N.J., November 29, 1949 1125 T-town blues (unknown vcl) Regal 3249, Delmark DL439 It says the vocalist is unknown but I think it's Harold 'Geezil' Minerve. He sang on a Buddy Johnson single a couple of years later. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MpiFLmmpf7k More later (earlier, if I can find them). MG Can't find anything else before the sixties on YouTube. Not even the 1957 single with Booker Ervin in the band. The Delmark LP listed is a joint effort with Cab Calloway - Big band jazz Tulsa to Harlem. MG
