  1. Jazz Profiles: Sonny Clark - The Blue Note Years by Steve Siegel https://jazzprofiles.blogspot.com/2022/06/sonny-clark-blue-note-years-by-steve.html?m=0
  2. As I think I've mentioned here before, one of the things I do to use up excess time and stay out of trouble is write things for my own amusement and one thing I've been working on is compiling an imaginary box set of BNGTs (see title(. It started out as just figuring out just how many son of Sidewinder tracks did they record at BN, and then expanded to include the third cousins, twice removed (anything with a vamp kept through the solos, no walking bass, no shuffles). Well now I've gotten to the revival of the label from the '80s til now and I can't think of much since I don't know this period as well as the vintage stuff. I own some and have a few titles in mind, but any listening suggestions would be most welcome. Thanks and take care.
  3. listening to various "early" Blue Note recording's made at WOR. The engineer (so far), is always Doug Hawkins, and it seems like he did a REALLY good job capturing a full group sound, balance is great, so is the presence. What do we know about this guy, other than he also appears to have done some early work for Prestige? Was he a WOR guy who alos did radio shows? Or what?
  4. Check this out...lots of cool titles coming, though I'll have to wait a year for Scofield/Metheny http://www.bluenote.com/tone-poet-vinyl-series-2020/ My highlights... January 24 Hank Mobley – Poppin’ (Blue Note, 1957) February 28 Chet Baker – Chet Baker Sings (Pacific Jazz, 1954-56) Grant Green – Nigeria (Blue Note, 1962) April 24 Lee Morgan – The Cooker (Blue Note, 1957) June 26 Bobby Hutcherson – The Kicker (Blue Note, 1963) September 25 Bobby Hutcherson – Oblique (Blue Note, 1967) October 23 Tina Brooks – The Waiting Game (Blue Note, 1961) November 20 Lee Morgan – The Rajah (Blue Note, 1966) December 11 Paul Chambers – Bass On Top (Blue Note, 1957) John Scofield & Pat Metheny – I Can See Your House From Here (Blue Note, 1993)
  5. Hey Everyone! I haven't been active on here in A WHILE, but this whole Blue Note 80th Anniversary has kind of drawn me out of the woodwork. Good to see so many familiar folks still around. I hope to be active again and stick around for a while, as I've started collecting vinyl recently and now a whole other world has opened up for me... Anyway, I've been searching around for info re: BN80 reissue campaigns and came across some info today regarding a reissue program in Japan. Apparently it's called The 80 Works and includes titles reissued on UHQCDs. There's some available now on dustygroove.com and I found some info on cdjapan about what's in each batch. I'm guessing 4 batches of 20 titles each. The 80 Works Batch 1 The 80 Works Batch 2 The 80 Works Batch 3 The 80 Works Batch 4 I didn't see this info in another thread, but if it is I apologize. There's also another series of reissues called Blue Note LA Revivals - I'm not sure how new these are, but I'd say its of interest nonetheless.
  6. Posting this brand-new Night Lights program in honor of Mr. Tyner's 80th birthday today: Tyner Time: McCoy Tyner's Blue Note Years The show focuses exclusively on his leader dates for Blue Note from 1967 to 1970.
  7. http://www.bluenotereview.com/ Expensive at $200, but I guess their thinking is that the limited nature of the material in the set will garner the collectors out there. To my thinking, $200 for 2 CDs, 3 LPs, a booklet, a couple of photos, a cork turntable mat and a scarf (??) is asking a bit too much. My guess if if they made this a box with Tyrone Washington's "train wreck" session or that unissued Jazz Messengers session, a lot of us would be opening our wallets.
  8. I think these releases were posted here before but I cannot see any dedicated thread. 12. Last month a label called Real Gone Music reissued some early 70s BN albums that all are new to CD. These are from the late 4000 series and thus predate the BN-LA and LT series that are currently covered in Japan. I couldn't find any previous mention of them, so here is a thread. The releases are: Jeremy Steig - Wayfaring Stranger (1970) Gene Harris / The Three Sounds (1971) & Gene Harris Of The Three Sounds (1972) Bobbi Humphrey - Dig This! (1972) Hopefully more will follow. There are still a number of BN albums from the late 60s-early 70s that never have seen CD light. Real Gone Music should (probably!) not be confused with Real Gone Jazz, the public domain label that has come out with all of those "Eight Classic Albums" boxes of questionable quality.
