Speaking of "Croquet Ballet" what the hell is that underwater and emerge thing that Lee does on his solo? It kills me everytime I hear it. Sometimes with the remote I play it over and over. I never tire of it.

My copy of KELLY GREAT has Lee Morgan and Wayne Shorter on it. And yes, it's a goodun'.
-
The answer is yes.

Oops! Sorry. Thanks for the correction.

Yeah, I remember something about Ravi's involvement with this project.

Has this been discussed here? Yesterday I saw an advance copy. Saw it, smelled it, touched it. Projected release date is December '05. It's a double cd, recorded "live", featuring the classic quartet. It consists of eight tracks. I don't remember all of the titles but I do remember seeing "One Up, One Down" and a 22 minute version of "Afro-Blue". I was told that the cd has superior audio. Also, according to the people who showed it to me, the performances exceed the upcoming Trane and Monk at Carnegie Hall cd. Am I late reporting this???

AFTER HOURS has always been the cornerstone of this album for me. This is the blues. And Rollins rough and tumble solo puts his footprint on this one. When I hear this tune, visions of a smokey, whiskey smelling juke joint late on a Saturday night, become almost palpable. "Hey, bartender, hit me one mo' time".

I know Hurricane Katrina is old news by now to many of us, but I received this link from a friend and I would like to share it. Tim Wise -

Is this a different contract than the competitive-bid contract we were discussing in another thread a few days ago? Guy ← -

In answer to that question, I just saw on CSPAN that Haliburton was awarded a $500 million, no bid contract, for re-construction in N.O. And we were all wondering where Cheney was. -

Ghost it's late, so perhaps I am missing something on this now quite long thread, but did anyone here mention the Governor and whether she did or didn't declare an emergency on the 26th? ← The information you're asking for is right there. Just click on "outright lies", if you really want to know. -

Obviously, you have not seen the same coverage I have. What about the people at the convention center who DID EVACUATE? Went where they were told to go. Did exactly as they were told and were left there to die with no food or water or services for days. There were people dying on the spot. Elderly and handicapped people dying in their wheelchairs, women and babies. The reporter I watched said he had people die in front of him. With anguish he said, "I can't take it, anymore". Also, about the looting. I read an interesting article yesterday that had photos of people taking things from stores. The caption under the black person, wading through chest deep water, said he had just "looted a grocery store". The caption under the white people, wading through chest deep water, said they had just "found bread and sodas from a local grocery". I don't consider it looting if you are doing everything you can for you and your family to survive. -

GOOD GRIEF! -
Which solo -- the first one or the second? (They're both phenomenal, but maybe you have a preference.) Guy ← Both!
-
Mobley's solo and Wynton Kelly's solo on "So What" from Miles @ Carnegie Hall. Trane's solo on "Out Of This World" from COLTRANE (Impulse!). Dexter's solo on "Willow Weep For Me" from OUR MAN IN PARIS. (Also, Trane's "Teo" solo)
-
Dex's solo on "Tanya" Dolphy's solo on "Aggression".
-
Eric's solo on "Aggression" from the Five Spot recordings.

I live in L.A. and whenever I visit Detroit, people there tell me that they are afraid to come to L.A. because of the gangs, earthquakes, etc. Seems the grass is always uglier on the other side.

"Alexandria the Great" on Night Lights
Cali replied to ghost of miles's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
Luv Lorez. Luv ALEXANDRIA THE GREAT, a great, great album. The arrangement on "I've Grown Accustomed To His Face" is Gil Evans-es and an absolute masterpiece. I'll be listening! -
But seriously, she's got these moves at the piano like all the great old be-bop pianists. That kind of shoulder roll with the right shoulder when she's reaching for the high notes, if you know what I mean. Wicked!
-
All I know is I've seen her in concert and she has her be-bop (chops) together!

This is the cover of Al's first album as a leader. Recorded in 1999, it received a grammy nomination. Al was very proud of that.
