CD's/Albums of studio or live performaces?
Cali replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Hard to choose. On one hand you have superior acoustics in studio (generally). On the other hand "live" recordings cannot be matched for capturing the interaction and inspiration between musicians and audience, at least in the case of jazz. Coltrane is a classic example. The spirit in the Village Vanguard and Birdland sessions could never have been captured in a studio IMO. -
Didn't have it due to his situation at the time.

A fav pic of Billy, taken from a World Stage poster:

I'm late to this thread but as I posted on an old thread, Billie told me that on LFR all he had was a tom-tom and one cymbal, period. No snare, no bass drum, no hi-hat, a tom-tom and a cymbal. So, this "standard rivet set-up" stuff is bull, at least on this recording. Listen again, closely. As far as playing loud, Billy didn't. I was fortunate enough to hear Billie whenever he was in town. I lived down the street from his community music center, The World Stage. I had the privilege of seeing Billy play in several settings at the World Stage; with Jackie McLean, a duet with Max Roach, Pharoah Sanders and Juno Lewis, etc. Billy was always swinging and smiling but never loud. When I think of Billy Higgins the adjectives that come to mind are swinging, happy and tasteful. Billy took the time to give my 12 year old son free drum lessons. He was a sweet and giving person. A lot of young musicians were nurtured at the World Stage including "B-Sharp" and "Black Note". And the stories he would tell! His main man was "Howdy Dooty", Lee Morgan.

All my other cds work fine. Oh well, sucks for me.

Does anyone know a solution to my situation? My BN cds were U.S. versions. How can I burn them?

Glad to see your friend got the gold. I was on my way to the velodrome when a last minute situation occurred. Very disappointed. Happy for you and your bud.

RainyDay and JSngry have it right AFAIC. Why was Cochran "disgusting and slimy"? Was it because he dominated that courtroom? Was it because he was better at his job than the inept and politically selected prosecution team? To accurately appraise Johnny Cochran as an attorney, anyone who cares about accuracy should look at the cases he won for underprivileged defendants. How he had found the LAPD guilty in several cases of tainting evidence and lying under oath. They should also look at his background in the L.A. District Attorney's office. After all, he had been at one time, Judge Ito, Marsha Clark and Chris Durden's boss! The man was a brilliant attorney. For the record, I believe OJ did it. But to classify anyone who believes otherwise as brainless and unintelligent is patronizing at best.

Speaking of King Curtis, his "cross-over" jazz album, THE NEW SCENE is really sweet! In some cases the line between R & B and jazz is kinda blurred. I was in the army with Maceo Parker, the great R & B alto player from James Brown's band. After work, in the dayroom, he and other players would play nothing but jazz, from Monk to Bird and back. I mean Maceo could flat out play! Just great jam sessions into the a.m. Then when the James Brown Revue came to town, there he would be onstage ripping some of the fiercest R & B licks you ever heard. I understand that even Coltrane used to be a "bar walker".

I have a Mac G4 and the RVG of JACKIE'S BAG and Larry Young's CONN, MOTHERSHIP cannot be read by my machine. The cd icon doesn't even appear on the desktop and therefore cannot play on my Mac at all.

About a 30 minute drive away. Have been to the velodrome several times. It's on the campus of California State University Dominquez Hills. I'll check it out Saturday. Thanks for the info!

I have only the Cables, Cowell and Barron volumes. I like Cables the best of the three, however, I love Barron's reading of "Sunshower".

What is the date(s) and times of event(s)?

Guess the writer never heard of Jackie Mack, Greg Osby, Gary Bartz and a few dozen more.

When Kenny let's out all the stops...Who-wee! Every time I have seen him live he has been electric. Love the album STANDARD OF LANGUAGE. HAPPY PEOPLE is not as strong but there are a couple of cuts on there that smoke! Count me in as a big KG fan. Miles anointed him.

A musician I know who has known Brubeck a long time, once told me that the source of those odd time signatures that Brubeck sometimes employs is his Native American heritage.

Having seen each of them in the 60s, my overall impression is they were both great. To me, Freddie, though technically brilliant, did not construct his solos with as much continuity as Lee. Lee's solos always seemed logical and told a story, with a beginning a middle and an end. Someone earlier said that Lee's solos were conversational and I completely agree. When you listen to Lee it's like he's talking to you. I get the same feeling listening to Dolphy.

INDESTRUCTIBLE and FREE FOR ALL back to back will fry your CD player!

Check this out: Trane animation If you have a high speed connection give this about a minute to open.

I assume you have the Atlantic recordings MY FAVORITE THINGS and COLTRANE'S SOUND, already.

Looking back through Wayne's discography, my opinion of his music is much like an old family friend's description of his fondness for pork; "I like the pig from the rooter to the tooter"!

Looks beautiful to me, also. Like The Running Fence in northern California in the 70's, I believe the esthetics of The Gates are affected by the light at different times of day, the wind (movement), and perspective influenced by relative distance to the design. There was much criticism of Christo's Running Fence, initially. Then after it was completed it was widely hailed by most, including people who opposed it in the beginning. Residents of the area still treasure their saved swatches of the material. I was fortunate enough to see it and it was breathtaking when the sun reflected off it as it ran for mile after shimmering mile. Give it time. Sometimes we have to live with an idea a while before we can see with new eyes. Then again, maybe not. I like the color. I think it brings energy to an otherwise gray landscape at this time of the year.
