  1. I'm saddened to report that Al McKibbon, the great bassist, passed away today in Los Angeles.
  2. One more time: Giant Steps
  3. So, Wayne didn't make the cut on either edition? And "Blue Train kinda sucks"???

    Favorite "Comper"?

Sonny Clark, Sonny Clark, Sonny Clark!
  5. Great series between the NBA's two best TEAMS. Duncan deserved the MVP. If you think of one player that either team could not have won without, it's him. He has a complete game, scoring, passing, defence, shot blocking, rebounding and smarts. Even though he was being double and triple teamed by R. Wallace, B. Wallace and at times Prince, his passing and shooting from outside opened up the lane for Ginoboli and prevented Detroit from knocking him on his ass everytime he went to the basket like they did in games 3, 4, and 5. Besides his defense on both Wallaces maybe you noticed Detroit guards got few lay-ups. And his rebounding, Rasheed got one rebound last night. That's huge. Duncan may not be flashy, he just does what it takes to win.

    Bennie Maupin

Bennie is a resident of Altadena, California, that's in Los Angeles county. He is very active on the local scene. Caught him 2 weeks ago. Still swingin'.
  7. Yeah, but you gotta admit El Bario is a hell of a ride!
  8. Maybe you can elaborate on why you didn't catch McCoy. Are you included in the people that LA jazz doesn't get? I'm not being critical, just curious. Also, I don't consider McCoy Tyner L.A. jazz.
  9. You might check out Henderson's INNER URGE, also. It was recorded 2 1/2 years before THE REAL McCOY and both feature Joe, McCoy and Elvin in a quartet.
  10. The fine print says "RIVERSIDE".
  11. Buy it. I've loved it for years. I'd compare it to Pearson's SWEET HONEY BEE but with more bite.
  12. I like this album for one tune only, JEANNINE, a classic, classic tune. The rest of the album doesn't do anything for me. But that tune! I guess I'm kinda different, I really dig Pepper Adams rough and tumble style, especially on JEANNINE.
  13. I have always loved this album and was very happy to see it get the RVG treatment. Maybe because I have an affinity for the afro-cuban thing (the clave), the title track has always knocked me out. Back in the day, we used to dance (mambo) to it a lot. I like the length of the tune because of the groove it lays out. Joe and Kenny are cookin'! I would have liked for Butch to be more creative in his bass work, like Richard Davis does on "Mamacita" from TROMPETA TOCCATA, but he is steady and solid. "Straight Ahead" is just that, with Kenny and Joe taking care of plenty business. "Sao Paolo" is a beautiful tune that has an air of mystery about it. The introduction makes me imagine being on an airplane as it descends through the clouds revealing the huge Christ statue in Brazil. Reminiscent of "Sunset" from Kenny's WHISTLE STOP, it has a nice bossa feel to it. Kenny solo is outstanding here, the way he glides through the time changes from bossa to straight and back. "If Ever I Would Leave You" took a while to grow on me, as it was not part of the original album and didn't seem to fit in, but the more I hear it the more I like it. And as JSngry previously stated, Herbie's intro is other-worldly. All in all, for me, this is a great album. I believe the Lion and the Wolff heard the results of this session and said "WHOA!" and got KD and Joe back in the studio as soon as possible (2 months) to record PAGE ONE. When I listen to these two albums back to back, PO sounds like a continuation of the same album, sorta UNA MAS I & II. Herbie and Tony are stellar throughout and I'm sure when he heard this album, Miles Smiled. BTW I also love the cover. One of BN's best IMHO.
  14. Lee Morgan had a very hip stage presence, so did (does) Wayne Shorter.

    Crusaders

Although they are from Texas, The (Jazz) Crusaders are pretty much an L.A. band. This is where they lived during their most powerful years. Basically, the members still live here. Have seen them since they arrived in L.A. and through all their incarnations. I still like the 60's - early 70's stuff best. I think they made ONE latin based album. The album I like best, LOOKIN' AHEAD, hasn't been released as a single cd. I believe it was their second album, right after FREEDOM SOUND. I don't know why record companies make the decisions they make on re-issues. LA should have been released years ago. Glad I have the vinyl.
  16. "WHAT IS HIP?" - Tower of Power
  17. Is there an overview of all previously selected albums in this thread? It would be helpful for volunteers who would like to participate. My apologies in advance if I'm overlooking something.
  18. There is a Cal Tjader Tribute concert happening this friday in my neck of the woods. On the email announcement was this interesting web site: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cal_Tjader
  19. Did anyone mention this favorite of mine? Played over and over yesterday. Tracks are: MANILA KEY LARGO TUMBAO BLUDAN CHISPITA SEPTEMBER SONG CAL'S PALS PARA TI MAMBLUES
  20. Yeah, that was the sh-t! Down in L.A. it was the same group except Al McKibbon was the bass player. When that group locked in, you were transported.
  21. George Cables is an "A+" player in my book.
  22. Do you mean make Mime lime?
