Hmmm.......AMG did have the correct sequence at the time I posted - I remember I checked it against my own self-corrected CD inlay card . I'm curious as to whether the error occurred on the original LP . Here's the label from side one , showing a completely different sequence from either AMG or the actual CD sequence : Perhaps someone who has the record can weigh in .

$3,342.99 for Jutta Hipp with Zoot Sims ?? . "Stunning copy of a stunning record" Uh.................no . Zoot is good on the date sure , but Jerry Lloyd is mediocre . He puts his Baker-like anemic sound to no particular good use ; his lack of regular playing evident in his halting and uncertain phrasing and shaky intonation . Additionally , as I recall , he was asthmatic or had some kind of lung problem and only took up the trumpet as therapy .

Can you ID this avant-jazz artist/composition?
Chas replied to shnaggletooth's topic in Miscellaneous Music
FWIW , that was my initial reaction as well . -
Roy and Jimmy were in The Newport Jazz Festival All-Stars band that toured in '72 ; I take it this boot is from that time ? Roy's on a few sessions with organists , but it looks like his only appearance with an organ leader is Shirley Scott's Workin' from '61 .

I really like this cover- it was designed by Tom Hannan. Did he do other BN covers? Yes :

Track 1 : Don't have it , but it sounds like Farmer & Golson , with possibly Jimmy Cleveland and Hank Jones . Track 2 : Don't have it , but the feel of this one had me thinking Vince Guaraldi right away . Nice track . Track 8 : Instant recognition - Frank Strazzeri from the album Taurus , early 70's . Good album , as is After The Rain from later in the 70's . Track 9 : Again , instant recognition of one of my favorite Prestige sides , Teo Macero with the PJQ . Track 13 : Randy Weston ? Track 15 : This is Hal McKusick from Triple Exposure with Billy Byers . Track 17 : Max Roach with Coleman and Little . Track 19 : Don't have this one , but I'm getting a west-coast vibe from it ; Baker & Freeman ? Track 20 : This is Charles McPherson with Clifford Jordan from the album Con Alma . Track 21 : This version of Poinciana is from an album by Allan Chase . Track 25 : Buffalo Springfield

I see recordings on the label all the time but I've always heard that the pressings were poor so I've avoided them. Both of the Payne sessions are out on a Fresh Sound CD , but the sound is , as expected , poor . FWIW , I find those sessions middling anyway .

Pop / rock songs jazzified -- the best (and the worst)?
Chas replied to Norm's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Lionel Hampton - Saturday Night Jazz Fever : an album-length cover of the Bee Gees' soundtrack ; can't believe Mike Nock and John Scofield didn't use pseudonyms . Doesn't reach the so-bad-it's-good level for me . Maybe some day , but not today . Lionel Hampton - Grease : see comment above . Maynard Ferguson - Carnival & Conquistador , containing covers of the following : Theme From Star Wars : jazz content is nil , crummy guitar solo ; prefer Groove Holmes' version Theme From Rocky : again , instrumental pop not jazz ; again , Holmes' version is better Theme From Battlestar Galactica : backing vocals , disco beat and sound effects sink this one Baker Street : more cheeseball backing vocals and an unimaginative rendition Theme From Star Trek : Bobby Militello's flute solo makes this one the best of a bad bunch Richard Groove Holmes - Star Wars/Close Encounters : this album not only contains strangely listenable covers of the themes from Star Wars , Rocky , and The Spy Who Loved Me , but also harder-to-sit-through covers of You Light Up My Life and Carry On Wayward Son ( yes , that one ) !! Thankfully no backing vocals on this one , and Holmes' solos are good enough to make this album a guilty pleasure . -
Yes , which is why I doubted that WWS-8517 is sonically distinguishable from UAS-5032 . No need to tell me brother .

Given that Hub's on cornet throughout it , strictly speaking , you're left with this adjectival mouthful : "maybe the finest trumpet-like-horn plus rhythm quartet album ever"

It appears that the Bill Potts is the only title in UA's Ultra Audio Series not recorded with that series in mind . I assume that this means that it's free from gimmicky stereo effects and thus sounds like the original stereo issue . Since the Ultra Audio Series LPs have gatefold covers , I also assume this mean the Potts has the wonderful booklet that was included with the original release . Speaking of that booklet , somebody here who doesn't own this music or owns only the CD will be interested to know that there's an original mono copy of the Potts up for grabs right now at Dusty Groove and it's only $5.00 . Worth it for the booklet alone trust me !

Gee , tough room . I never said I would post only covers not found on Gokudo or Birkajazz , but that I would post some covers not found there , which is what I have done . I assume all the Prestige 10" covers are viewable somewhere , though if anyone knows where I can view the cover to PRLP-163 , please let me know . Anyhow , here are a couple more covers , this time featuring the Van Gelder's (shower) curtains :

Johnny Lytle - People and love Johnny Lytle - The soulful rebel Johnny "Hammond" Smith - What's going on MG The Soulful Rebel is my favorite Lytle record , with People And Love not far behind . Two tracks from it have appeared on samplers , but that's it . I expected/hoped that Ace/BGP would do a 2-on-1 CD reissue of these to complement the one they did for his Tuba albums , but alas , not yet . Perhaps their Fantasy license has expired . Vibes fans know that Lytle , like Freddie McCoy , is inexplicably poorly represented on CD . Smith's What's Going On is one of my favorites of his as well . His workout on Gaye's classic is fabulous ; he builds slowly , finds the groove , and then rides it for nearly ten minutes before the pots come down . The recording was done at a time when Smith's conception/style was arguably at its most individual , before his move into Earland-ville . Lord knows I loved and financially supported Fantasy's reissue efforts , but I'd guess there might be as many as a couple hundred albums they never got around to reissuing . Off the top of my head I can think of a couple dozen of those digital-age orphans that I own and thus find musically valuable . I would make a snide comment about vinyl-phobes missing out on plenty of good jazz but for the fact that a lot of this stuff is available in digital format in those devil's workshops known as jazz blogs . So I'll save any such comments for the dwindling band of doughty anti-bloggers instead .

Understandable , given that these tracks are likely part of a Voice Of America transcription disc of a concert performance in Europe (possibly Germany) .

Well , somebody was interested.......winning bid was $ 202.49

Gokudo has only three Prestige ten-inch covers , Birkajazz , two dozen or so of the roughly two-hundred issued , meaning the majority remain largely unseen . I don't imagine the forthcoming Prestige book will remedy this , as it's likely to be more marketing tool than reference work . In view of which , I should note that I've an assemblage of Prestige ten-inch cover pics not on Gokudo or Birkajazz that I could post if there's interest .
