  1. I bet John Dean's had that dream a few times....
  2. And how many times has David Raksin been listed as David Raskin ?!
  3. I'd really like to know what this was about, I wonder if Jim R still reads the forum. The AllMusic Guide provides the correct CD sequence . The CD sequencing error derives from the sequencing error made on side one of Prestige 7665 which was a reissue of New Jazz 8258 ( which was itself a reissue of Prestige 177 & 193 ) . The CD timings are correct however . Speaking of Art Farmer , what are we to make of his The Many Faces of Art Farmer recording on Scepter which is currently out on CD from Gambit ? The CD sequence is clearly wrong , but a check of the original LP cover and label shows the same sequence , so the error presumably started with the original issue . Perhaps someone with an original copy can check this , and also perhaps comment on the sound quality of the original vinyl , since the CD sound is somewhat murky .
  4. Congrats to Jay (zanonesdelpueblo) for winning the book with a last minute snipe .
  5. I believe it was Evan who led the necromancy .
  6. Here's an album featuring Bob Dorough on that favorite instrument of primary school music students - the recorder !
  7. That interview is available online , and it's a good read . I know Goldblatt put out a book of his photography called , Jazz Gallery One , but given the breadth of his artistic talents and output someone ought to give him the Steinweiss , Flora treatment . That's a decent enough book , with a Goldblatt section as well , but Jazzical Moods and Jazz Grafico are of greater interest to me since , unlike In The Groove , they focus exclusively on jazz cover art .
  8. Another entire session with a musician not playing their primary instrument is Rusty Dedrick's Salute To Bunny , which represents the sole recorded example of John LaPorta's baritone playing .
  9. Yes , keyboard duties in that band were handled by Ray Santisi .

    r.i.p. Kenny Cox

I'd be interested to know whether tapes exist for Kenny Cox's Glap Glap , and CJQ's The Black Hole . Both these albums were pictured on the back of Strata records issued towards the end of the label's run .
  11. Appreciate your input Baker . By the way , how would you rate Jazz grafico : diseño y fotografía en el disco de jazz 1940-1968 ? Does it cover the same ground as the other cover art books ? What I'd really like to find is a book focusing on small label , 10-inch , 7-inch and 78 rpm covers .
  12. Yes , that's the man behind the curtain , so to speak .
  13. What kind of a crazy chew-toy is that ? Must be for seeing-eye dogs
  14. Here's the auction . I'm not Mancunian ( though I've been accused of being Manichean -_- ) , so I've no 'connection' here . Will someone hit Buy-It-Now for 50 quid ? ( cheaper than any current online price ) . Should I ? I've heard that this is a very good book , but is it really on par with Manek Daver's Jazz Album Covers : The Rare and The Beautiful ( the best jazz cover art book I'm familiar with ) ?
  15. The Modest Jazz Trio , Good Friday Blues - Red Mitchell on piano
  16. Not sure an electric piano counts instead of an accoustic one. Well I'm sure . An electric-piano is as distinctive from an acoustic piano as a harpsichord or a clavichord ! If , like many others , Randy Weston had played electric-pianos for years then I wouldn't have cited him , but Blue Moses is noteworthy for being the only electric-piano album he's recorded .
  17. Randy Weston , Blue Moses - Weston on electric-piano
  18. Bob Brookmeyer Trio , Holiday - Brookmeyer on piano exclusively .
  19. Buddy DeFranco , Blues Bag on Veejay - DeFranco's only bass-clarinet recording . Pete Jolly , Porgy & Bess on Interlude ( led by Buddy Collette ) - Jolly on accordion throughout .
  20. All-day darkness = not a problem Approaching asteroid causing all-day darkness = PROBLEM
  21. That sense of humor is not on display on the recordings I cited . The Zoo ( Pearlie's Swine on the Buddah recording ) excepted , the rest of his vocalizing is anything but humorous . A poor singing voice can be forgiven if the aim is jocularity and whimsy , but on those early 70's records both Kuhn and his lyrics are off-puttingly earnest : " Parts of me just ache and cry I know that feeling just because this moment of my lifetime has become the hardest thing I've had to face as the walls all around my life , all around the years , very special years fall apart Time to run away as far away as worlds of empty colors show the sadness in my longing for so much , so many things I'll never know , not now Time to go as fast as all the years went by me waiting for tomorrow's sun to tell me why... "
