  1. Man, I can't offer any advice. It's difficult to choose between two 'good' things. As I view the poll, right now, it's running 50% for each set. Figures. Good luck, John Tapscott. Maybe skip the electric bill, like Soulstation1, and get both sets? The remastering and the packaging are EXCELLENT on both sets. Each set contains equally strong playing and large numbers of alternate takes. I do like the Frank Strozier set included in the Kelly/Chambers box. But, I also enjoy the terrific playing from Morgan and Shorter on Morgan/Shorter box. I progam my CD player to skip the alternate takes (when playing either of the Vee Jay boxes). Definitely, a predicament.
  2. A friend, from Ohio, wrote to let me know her favorite radio station is no more as of today. Twenty-three years of independent radio, the future of rock and roll, comes to a close. I suppose WOXY lasted as long as it could. Times change and things change. I wasn't into the genre of music played on the station, but I know, from listening to it with my friend, that the station had its own style of programming. The end of WOXY is another sign of the power of the corporations and the generic musical tastes of the consumer. Most people, to me, seem to like to hear the same generic music they are accustomed to. Nothing new or different from the mainstream. This is the radio station that was mentioned in the movie Rain Man. http://www.woxy.com
  3. There was a time, about a year ago, when I wouldn't have considered spending money on the Venuti/Lang Mosaic box. I'd recently purchased the Bix/Tram and the Django boxes, and figured I had enough music from that era. Recently, however, I've been listening to Armstrong's Hot Fives/Sevens Columbia box, enjoying the hell out of it, and also have been in a guitar mood. Damn, the desire for the Venuti/Lang box sneaks up on me.
  4. This is not supposed to be a political thread. I don't want to mention any specifics about politics here. But, after spending the last couple of days with my mind stuck in the political happenings of the day, I've returned, tonight, to my copy of the Morgan/Shorter Vee Jay Mosaic. I'm listening to the 'Here's Lee Morgan' release as I type these words. Man, it's nice to be reminded of the excellence of the Mosaic Vee Jay sets. I've had no alcohol this evening. Not a drop. Yet, my mind has been drugged, all the same, by this beautiful music (and the excellent remastering effort of Malcolm Addey). The Vee Jay sets are, as I've written before, an example of the best of Mosaic and not to be missed. Excellent sound and excellent playing by all involved. Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, Art Blakey, Lee Morgan, and Clifford Jordan on the tune I'm listening to now. Combined with Addey's remastering and Cuscuna's packaging. It doesn't get any better. This music reminds me of the pleasure & privilege of being alive. B)
  5. Congrats, Rachel. I hope you enjoy the Johnson and Jones Mosaics. I have a three day weekend, next weekend, starting on 5/21/04. I'm going to submit my order to Mosaic next Tuesday evening. The timing of my order should place the Mosaics on my doorstep on the afternoon of 5/21/04. I'll be enjoying the new Mosaics all weekend. Reading, listening, and appreciating. Maybe I'll get the most recent couple of Selects too. B)
  6. My picks are: J.J. Johnson - Complete Mosaic Dizzy Reece - Mosaic Select Dave Liebman - Mosaic Select Elvin Jones - Complete Mosaic (possibly) Anything I might find via the Border's 'Buy 3, Get 1 Free' sale
  7. Miles Of Jazz link to Debra Hurd
  8. I don't have any documentation. However, it seems I read that manufactured CDs should last about 50 years. Maybe my memory is bad or what I read wasn't accurate. For most of us, 50 years from now, we won't care anyhow. I'll be 88 if I live another 50 years.
  9. I don't think anybody argued that. I'm not certain anybody argued it either. I intend no diss at Brandon with today's post. However, here is my post, from early March, to agree with Brandon's point that CDs don't last forever. I have an Ella CD that used to be a normal CD. But, is now clear. >link<
  10. Curtis Amy - Native Land (available on the Curtis Amy Mosaic Select). OMG, it gets me every time. Miles Davis - Masqualero (from the Sorcerer album)
  11. Welcome back Jim Dye. I've never understood the desire to change a given board name. Not that it really matters. But, why? It's the 'handle' the poster is accustomed to. As well, it's the 'handle' the board readers are accustomed to. I could understand if you'd just started using a new name, as a new board member, and decided you'd selected the wrong thing. But, after many posts and many years, why change what works?
  12. You'd think a live person on the telephone would know, wouldn't ya? Man, I hope. I wonder, does the Mosaic website not update itself when the last set sells? Even if it's some time in the night? I don't know, just wondering...
  13. couw: I didn't even notice what you saw in the picture. The guy, standing over there, paying no attention to some good ol' jazz. What's his problem? Knock him out.
  14. I listened to a few tracks off the new Prince, today, at a music store. I trust the opinions on this board. But, me no likey. The problem, it sounds too much like... errr, Prince. To my ears and mind, Prince has been mostly an 'I want your attention and your money' bore since he recorded I Wanna Be Your Lover in 1979. Hmmm... Does Prince have 'issues' with wearing clothes on his album covers? No Prince for me, please.
  15. It's nearly 12:30AM as I type these words. I'm feeling hungry for some fried catfish.
  16. 7/4: Man, when do you sleep? B)
  17. This is not meant as an agrument. Please, don't take it that way. My copy of 'The Easy Way' lists Giuffre as playing clarinet, tenor sax, and baritone sax. No alto sax listed.
  18. I scanned through Jim Hall's website and looked at the gallery. Did Jim Hall EVER have hair?
  19. I'm at work as I type these words. I don't have 'The Easy Way' package with me. If I recall correctly, does the package say that Giuffre plays clarinet, alto, and tenor? I don't know. I could be wrong.
  20. It's bad enough seeing all the same advertising crap pasted all over NASCAR. However, NASCAR, from the local tracks to the big leagues, always has been nothing but a moving commercial, since it costs so much money to keep the cars running. This is true from the dirt tracks to Daytona. But, baseball?
  21. If my memory is good, I have seven from this series. The only one that doesn't have the liner notes insert is the Giuffre. I believe I can determine the correct instrumentation by listening. However, I'd appreciate some liner notes to confirm which instrument Giuffre is paying on a given selection.
  22. The only thing I was referring to was that, in this series, you either get the insert or you don't.
  23. This is what I thought. That there wasn't much to print for the liner notes. This series of re-issues often has, for liner notes, only an exploded view of what the backcover says.
  24. I bought 'The Easy Way' today. I was wondering if my copy was the 'one' that didn't have the liner notes included. Alas, I learned from this thread that this title doesn't offer liner notes.
