I'm familiar with only very basic HTML coding. I don't know how you do it. But, yes, this page looks very nice. I like the Flash activity. Very eye-catching. -
What's the oldest 'current' Mosaic box?
wesbed replied to wesbed's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
AfricaBrass: I don't have the Benedetti box. I can't honestly say 'yay' or 'nay' about it. My feeling is that it wouldn't be for me. But, one never knows. Yeah, you should go ahead and get this box while you're on your buying high. Man, get it. -
Opinions do seem to differ regarding the New Orleans Jazz box. From the posts I've read, people seem to really enjoy or really not enjoy the New Orleans Jazz box. I believe it's an excellent set of music. Yes, even the dreaded funeral music on the first disk. It's a box I'm always glad to know I have when I do an eyeball scan through personal stack of Mosaics. Down In A Honkytonk Town. Of course, only purchase this box if you do like or are interested in New Orleans style jazz. I've learned much from this box.

Okay. This does it for me. I'll have to purchase the JJ Johnson box in my next Mosaic order. Nope, no choice. I have to do it. B) -

What's the oldest 'current' Mosaic box?
wesbed replied to wesbed's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
The Benedetti/Charlie Parker box will never expire. Is this correct? I checked the Mosaic discography but, unless I missed it, could find no release date on the Benedetti box. -
What's the oldest 'current' Mosaic box (set of CDs)? I don't mean the Mosaic of the oldest music based on the music's original recording date. But, what's the oldest Mosaic based on Mosaic's release date? I found the Condon record set with a Mosaic date of 1994. The oldest CD box I can come up with is the JJ Johnson box from 1996. Is there a CD box I missed with a Mosaic release date older than 1996?

Feck. It still says 'Krall' on the cover.

My local Border's (both of them) have a much narrower jazz CD selection than what they used to have.
-
I wonder if this is true for any jazz CDs? You get the lowest-priced CD for free? If my local Border's store had let me know this, they'd have been able to sell more CDs, for sure.

I know there are some new RVGs being released this summer. I know Mosaic has announced some up-and-coming releases in future months. But, hey, it's Tuesday! Today. I go to my local Border's store every Tuesday and/or Wednesday evening to see what I can find. To learn what was just released/available that I didn't know about. To try to eye any new packaging that doesn't appear to be something I noticed the previous week. If I were to make my way down to my local Border's, Tower, Barnes & Noble, Virgin, local jazz shop, or pick-your-choice store, what should I be looking for? What issues/re-issues should be in the bins THIS Tuesday. Yeah, I realize that Border's might not have the new stuff on the shelves till Wednesday. Still, I can go look, wish, and dream... can't I? What should I dream about? What might I find on store shelves? What will 'you' be looking for at the music stores today? What have 'you' seen? Post 'em here (so I'll know what to spend my money on).

I had this same thought, exactly. The Columbia Hot Fives and Sevens Complete is a very nice package. But, the way the disks are stored is very poor. I was surprised to see such a potential disk-scratcher in the very nice Armstrong box. If these disks are played much, they need to be store someplace other than the Fives and Sevens box.

Is this a blue metal spine on the Complete Bitches Brew box? I can't quite tell from this picture. >link<

Thanks, Rooster. I keep going to the stores and looking for a Mosaic Complete sized box. From the pictures I've seen, I can never determine what kind of box the Plugged Nickel set is in. The pictures have seemed, to me, like a record-sized box. I think, the pictures of this set generally just show a close-up of the cover of the Plugged Nickel box. I can see from the picture you linked to, however, that the Plugged Nickel box is more like a thick Mosaic Select. Or, more like a thick version of the Miles/Blackhawk box. Again, much thanks for the Plugged Nickel box picture you supplied.

What's the style of the packaging of the Complete Plugged Nickel box? I've never seen the Plugged Nickel box in a store. Never. Is the Plugged Nickel box a full, record-sized box, such as the Mosaic boxes? Or, more of a slimmed-down, narrower-shaped type thing?

Don't feel too darned bad about yourself. I've purchased 4 Mosaic sets in the last couple of months due to this board. Of course, all the sets are so good that I'd have been ticked if I'd missed any of them.

I've never seen this packaging, except for, maybe, in pictures. What made it a nightmare?
-
Ummm... yes. 'I' knew it.

BFrank: Thanks for the information. I may need to place my order for Complete Silent Way box soon. What does dave9199 mean? The original Silent Way box didn't have the metal spine?

Morgan/Shorter and Chambers/Kelly Vee Jays

I'd not have thought of Cicely Tyson till I read it in this thread. But, duh... I should have known. -
Anybody know anything else about the new packaging? I just purchased, last week, The Complete Jack Johnson box (with the metal spine). I'd like to have The Complete Silent Way box. It looks like Amazon is still offering the original packaging on the Silent Way box. I'd rather spend more money, if necessary, to purchase the nicer packaging/set. For me, the dollar cost is not the issue. Is it recommended that I purchase the original packaging before it's no longer available? Or, wait till only the new packaging is available? Or, indifferent?

I've been making my way through the Miles Davis 1960s Quintet (the Plugged Nickel Quintet) in recent weeks. This is, really, my first time to listen to this material in detail. I always stop with Miles after enjoying the 1950s Prestige and Columbia material. To my surprise, the Miles 1960s music has been a very enjoyable, creative, mystical, and rewarding adventure. I've listened to the Plugged Nickel Highlights (only because I've not yet purchased the full box), E.S.P., Miles Smiles, and Sorcerer. I've read reviews that Miles Smiles was 'the strong' release but I've enjoyed E.S.P more. I was surprised to read, in this thread, per the poll results, that E.S.P. is holding it's own. It seems like I've read reviews saying that E.S.P.is good but has no direction and doesn't show-off this group as well as it could. I've not yet ventured into Nefertiti, Filles, and the subsquent releases. Although, I have listened, several times, to In A Silent Way and Bitches Brew. A couple of posts in this thread mention the titles in order of Sorcerer, Nefertiti and Water Babies. From what I understand, however, the next release after Nefertiti, back in the day, was Miles In the Sky. What is the recommended order to listen to this music the first time through? Should I purchase, listen, and learn via the Water Babies route or the Miles In the Sky route?

Morgan/Shorter and Chambers/Kelly Vee Jays
wesbed replied to DrJ's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
It's interesting... how much these two covers look alike. The same look of the woman, the same kind of pose. -
I just purchased my copy of The Complete Jack Johnson box. This is great 'driving' music. I drove across town, from where I purchased the box, to where I live. I was nearly in a trance by the time I got home. I've listened to only a couple of the disks. Yes, the first disk, with the 'Willie Nelson' collection, does get a bit tiresome on a play straight through. However, I don't believe the music was intended to be listened to this manner. At the same time, it's interesting to see how the music progressed on each alternate take. I wonder what inspired Miles to use the term Willie Nelson? The 'Go Ahead John' set, on the other hand, is quite good. Whether these songs are alternate takes or not, every take is unique and very good.
