Sorry to hear...Love is definitely a band worth checking out if you're into this sorta thing... Love Story 1966-1972 out on Rhino is a nice package to have. Has a good overview of the band's best.

The old pre-Concord Fantasy kicked butt!!!!!!! ALAS - I too feel that Concord will only reissue/RVG a cross section of their holdings - ONLY THE MUSIC THAT YIELDS $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ales !

Visiting here on the weekend! Stopped by to nab some Jackie McLean obits, etc. to use as part of my radio homage to him this coming Tuesday 4/25/06. I am able to sub at a local FM community radio station from time to time and will air a tribute to him during the program which will run from 9-11:30 a.m. central time on 90.1 FM WEFT. Whata F*cking great sound Jackie had on the instrument..."Let Freedom Ring" is still so vital to me IN MANY WAYS!!!! rant...rave...

That Tom Archia-CD IS stunning: Extremely rare material - and (mostly) breathtaking music. I finally received this in the mail...very tasty session indeed...also dig the vocalists a lot. This music walks the fine line between jazz & early R&B which I appreciate. A little disappointed in the harmonic sophistication of the material - lots of blues based tunes with improv that doesn't use a great deal of chromatic alteration/blues scales - even lacks extensive use of Mm7 chords and favors a more triadic approach. Still a very cool set! ANOTHER GREAT SERIES to spend more cashola on!!!

Wow! Really sad news - the maker of the great "DESTINATION OUT" has checked out! this was one of the first albums I really turned on to in the 1970's. I was fortunate to see him back in the 1980's with JJ Johnson, Walter Davis Jr., and others. One of my favorite altoists & composers... Rest in peace, Jackie.

I've been digging a bit - o' Mr. Lateef lately myself for some reason. Have been into "Centaur & the Phoenix," "Three Faces Of...," and "Eastern Sounds." Very hip "vibes" from this music - then again, a lot of GREAT tenor jam too! Hugh Lawson is also a damn fine pianist to have accompany you!

Gotta love Una! A perfect example - comprehensive reissue by a great artist who's music is no longer in circulation but definitely should be. I've got some B/W video feetage of Una that's pretty satisfying...uhhh - - but not QUITE as satisfying as Lena Horne in the sudsy bathtub in "Cabin in the Sky," though!!!

Hmmm- after visiting this thread and being prompted to return to the Chronological Classics releases I own, I have got to say this IS my CURRENT FAVORITE CD LABEL!! Anatol Schenker & Co. have a hellofa product, IMO! What other label offers such breadth & depth???...from The Three Peppers to King Cole Trio, from Baby Dodds to Big Sid Catlett, from Carter to Bird to Stitt, from Chittison to Garner...(etc.) THIS LABEL ROCKS! I love the variety and packaging...sound quality is GOOD ENOUGH TO GROOVE BY! I just picked up the 3 Una Mae Carlisle volumes, the 3 Alix Combelles, and the Gene Sedric... Hope they all stay in print!

Indeed, but otoh, it's those exact same CAPITALISTIC and other reasons that caused it to be recorded in the first place, so... Yeah, Jim, upon second thought you're right. I should really re-think this to get at the heart of what I mean...perhaps it has something to do with the fact that now we're dealing with a reissue,..."back then," it was musicians and companies putting a musical "product" out for the first time....time passes, people pass, and tastes change...

Just snaked up a Chick Webb Chron. Classics and one of them FINE Teddy Wilson's at a local used bookstore for 6 bucks each! I have 4-5 Teddy Wilson volumes and 4-5 Earl Hines and THEY ARE FRIGGIN' OUTSTANDING...as are the Duke Ellington's I have. I recommend JOHN KIRBY volume too. Chronolgical Classics are always a great buy to me - the variety and personnel SURPRISES are unbeatable IMO... MEANWHILE...prices of OOP Chron. Classics continue to SKYROCKET on Amazon & half.com - LCM PS - these highly inclusive volumes also make me realize HOW MUCH GREAT MUSIC was recorded in the distant past which, due to CAPITALISTIC and other reasons, remains neglected throughout recent history...MAN!

WOW - just heard David Berkman's quartet here at the University of Illinois Jazz Forum today...didn't even realize he was in town! Going to play at Green Mill this weekend I think - A MUST HEAR for those of you in the Windy City - Jimmy Greene on Tenor is just MIND BLOWING! This quartet rocks and takes the music to a level of sophistication and groove that I haven't heard in a LONG TIME - again A MUST HEAR if you're in Chicago! BTW - I recommend Berkman's "Handmade" cd as a great intro Brian Blade, Steve Wilson, Tom Harrell...some heavy shit!

I bought "Liquid Love" back in the late 70's (or early 80's) on 8 track tape! Haven't heard in some time and wonder if I'd still like it. I haven't seen it reissued on cd yet...

I picked up the McLean and am about to buy the Andrew Hill today...a quick question: I went to my vinyl collection at home and looked for "Andrew' - thought I already had. Rather, I came across Andrew Hill's "Compulsion" album with John Gilmore, et al...a similar line up BUT WITH FREDDIE HUBBARD on trumpet. Has "Compulsion" been reissued on cd? Only on Mosaic "Complete Andrew Hill??"

I like the feel, the "spirit of the times" that comes through on this session = "good vibes!"

Perhaps my all-time favorite Cannonball Capitol album has not been released on cd to date - not sure why. Any of you hip to the "Live!" album from 1964 - Capitol ST2399? This session at the Manne-Hole is SMOKING! PLUS - one of my favorite ballads - "The Song My Lady Sings" - is rendered here with superlative beauty! Features Cannon, Lloyd, Nat, Zawinul, Sam Jones, & Louis Hayes...A MUST HAVE, IMO! "Live in Europe" is quite good - and the audience response IS awesome!

I bought this used a while ago and recall liking it...pretty solid work from Chicago vibist Leukaufe.

My wife has had lousy luck with WALGREEN'S Photo- Manager screwed up photos bad & was a twit correcting the situation. Simply stated, Walgreen's mgrs. must be idiots who don't give a hoot about the customer from what I can tell.
