It was amusing to see my AMG review of the CD as a footnote.

Time to update my long dormant CD sale/trade list. A lot of new things are included, duplicate purchases, things from my mother's estate, etc.: Please note that all Venus CDs are from Japan, not South Korea or Russian bootlegs. Most open CDs are Near Mint, though I will review condition before confirming. New items are factory sealed and unmarked unless indicated. I also have jazz LPs if you would like a list, though i haven't seen as many posts about them on this board in awhile. I mail to US addresses only. Postage: $3.50 for the first CD, $.25 for each additional title. All packages sent with a tracking number. I will be happy to review any trade offers. Please PM me and post a reply to the forum with your requests. Payment via PayPal, any mailing will be to the PayPal confirmed address. There are hundreds more I want!

I count around 421 SteepleChase CDs in my collection, which doesn't include the LPs. All of Joe Locke's sessions are great, as are those by Lee Konitz, Andy LaVerne, Richie Beirach, Bent Axen George Cables, etc. The label has a high standard. Listening to Gregory Tardy's new SteepleChase CD Chasing After the Wind as I found this discussion.

AAJ Forum R.I.P.
Ken Dryden replied to Hot Ptah's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
I contributed to AAJ and its forum, though I haven't been active in the forum for years and I quit writing for them around a decade ago, aside from a few April Fool's reviews. -

There's still a lot of Columbia stuff that either hasn't been reissued on CD or lurking forgotten in Columbia's vault.

The CD arrived a few days ago and it's a nice set, with detailed liner notes from multiple contributors. I attempted to see Shirley Horn on one occasion, but illness cancelled the entire concert, as she was the headliner. My wife and I finally saw her on a double bill with the Dave Brubeck Quartet after she underwent surgery to amputate her leg, so I think George Mesterhazy took her place at the piano. What puzzled me was because Brubeck played the first set (due to an upstate booking the next day), about 40-50% of the audience departed before Horn took the stage. Those folks missed a masterful performance. I hope that Resonance continues to search through various live radio broadcast collections to find performances worthy of being issued. KNPR donated its 4 Queens Jazz Night From Las Vegas tapes to the University of Nevada Las Vegas library. I taped a number of shows and whenever possible I edited out the annoying host Alan Grant.

The ZFT is selling the house and the studio, too.

Count Basie -- "Complete Live At The Crescendo 1958"
Ken Dryden replied to duaneiac's topic in New Releases
I recently purchased this set and was surprised to see an excerpt of my AMG review of Count On the Coast, Vol. 1 on the back cover. Obviously I had not heard all five volumes in this particular package. Good stuff, in any case. -

Who did you miss when they were alive
Ken Dryden replied to Chuck Nessa's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
This could be a long list! Bud Shank: He was playing IAJE in Long Beach in 2003, but my wife was with me and wanted dinner immediately. That's the closest I ever got to seeing him play. Eubie Blake: He was part of a Palm Beach Jazz Festival on a Sunday evening in the late 1970s, but my parents had already gotten me a ticket to see Vladimir Horowitz in Miami Beach, there was no way to make both performances. My mother tried to console me and said, "He's getting up there and probably will only put on a token performance." The review in the paper the following day noted the Blake played a long set, followed by 8 encores. I never made it to E.J.'s in Atlanta but was living in the vicinity between 1978-1980. I missed a lot of artists who played there: Milt Jackson, Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, Dexter Gordon and Teddy Wilson for starters. Gerry Mulligan was part of a Fox Theatre concert in Atlanta in the early 1980s, but my hellacious schedule and distance from Atlanta at the time made it impossible to attend. Dizzy Gillespie was scheduled for an outdoor festival in our city in the early 1980s but was rained out by a furious thunderstorm. Benny Goodman was scheduled for that same festival in 1986 but died less than a week before his set. Lionel Hampton was a last minute replacement with his big band and wowed the crowd with his energy. Charles Mingus played the New Orleans Jazz Festival while I was at Tulane, but it was right in the middle of finals. -

alankin: You can find personnel and song lists for many of these shows at http://db.etree.org The only thing is you need to register for an account to make it easier to search the website. Please note that no music is available there for downloading. Also, some folks screw up the dates (particularly Europeans who enter the day before the month, which is not the standard for this website), list incorrect song titles or make wild guesses instead of just listing "unknown title." -
