  1. Investing a meeting with a dietician can prove very illuminating. In early 2018, I was around 241 lbs. I started counting carbs by meal, 45 to 60. Eating more fiber with meals helps slow down glucose absorption. I dropped sugary drinks, pasta, white bread, fried foods, most desserts (when I do enjoy them, it is after lunch rather than dinner) and got all the way down to 192 lbs. within a few months. I was hungry all the time, so I now try to stay in the 210-215 weight range at 6'2".
  2. I loved the bonus track in the boxed set “I Got It From Alice.”
  3. It would be nice to know the show dates for Duke Ellington to see how much has already been issued commercially by other labels.
  4. Their website was maddening to search but I found a few gems. I hope they enjoy retirement. Small mail order businesses are closing a lot these days.
  5. I talked to Alan Broadbent today and will edit it to fit into a Timeless Jazz broadcast some time in late August. If you anywhere close to Chattanooga (Nashville, Huntsville, Knoxville, Atlanta, Birmingham), please make plans to attend his solo piano concert in Chattanooga. It is a fundraiser for WUTC-FM and ticket proceeds benefit the station.
  6. Cootie Williams was one of the first Duke Ellington soloists who I heard on my father's Duke Ellington records. This should be a fascinating book.
  7. No software, I just complied it. I will have to check it out.
  8. R.I.P. I have three CDs on Blue Jack Jazz, one of which he is a part of the American-Dutch All Stars, but he is listed at the top. The CDs you referred to being on Origin are on Organic Music. I never got to see him perform, but he was a delightful interview for Hot House a few years back prior to coming back to the U.S. for a visit and brief tour.
  9. I wonder if a Pacific Jazz discography would include all of the butchered, edited repressings of Jim Hall's Jazz Guitar?
  10. I was chatting with Alan Broadbent this morning to go over preparations for his upcoming September concert here. After I told him about witnessing Marian McPartland's disgust with an unsuitable piano provided for a trio concert, he shared this gem: The late pianist Frank Strazzeri was also a skilled piano tuner. He arrived for a gig and found an untuned piano awaiting him. Frank tuned the piano, played the gig, then detuned it afterwards.
  11. Given that I have all the Evidence CD reissues and most are still unheard, I will likely pass on the Pharaoh Sanders.
  12. I had a DVD set of Young People’s Concerts but sold it without opening it. Hope this broadcast wasn’t included.
  13. I loved how Carl Palmer wore glasses as a disguise. It would be nice to see all of Oscar Peterson’s CBC TV shows from the 1970s. I videotaped a few from USA in the 1980s, but the repeat broadcast at 11 pm ET inevitably inserted a show promo voiceover on top of the final song. I didn’t give a damn about watching Beau Bridges in “United States,” coming up next.
  14. Unless a 78 rpm record is rare and has never been reissued on LP or CD, most collectors aren’t seeking them. Few turntables have the proper speed or stylus to play them as well. I’ve been given some over the years and ended up donating them.
  15. The sight lines are a bit odd in the Blue Note’s current configuration.
  16. My wife and I are presenting Alan Broadbent in an evening of solo piano on September 11th, at 7:30 pm, in Roland Hayes Concert Hall at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. All ticket proceeds will benefit WUTC-FM NPR 88.1, where I've spent many years. I don't know who on the board, other than HutchFan, lives within a reasonable driving distance of Chattanooga, but please share this information with anyone whom you might think would enjoy it who lives in the general area. I know HutchFan is planning on attending. https://www.utc.edu/arts-and-sciences/fine-arts-center
  17. Duncan also removed some text, mostly brief references to people that he decided weren’t all that important. I know this since I created the index for the second edition.
  18. It wasn’t mentioned in the recent Eric Dolphy biography, so an error seems likely.
  19. I wrote the liner notes for the 80th Birthday limited edition 2 LP set. Supposedly the label was only going to press the number of copies that were purchased in advance. I was sent two bonus tracks that were to be included, but only one ended up being included. I am not a fan of bashing the Marsalis family, although I think the patriarch’s compositions stick in mind more than any of his sons’s songs. I have seen both Branford and Wynton in concert and they played diverse, enjoyable sets.
  20. Is Ray Drummond still active? I can't remember the last time I saw him on a recording.
