Remember not to sell discs you might want later
Ken Dryden replied to David Ayers's topic in Offering and Looking For...
It's hard to imagine selling any Stan Getz, unless it was a duplication. I usually get rid of individual CDs when obtaining a boxed set, but I haven't pulled the trigger on the 9 volumes of Art Tatum on Storyville. I rarely have regrets over getting rid of anything. Too much unheard and little heard music remains. -
He'll probably take a swing at any NYC-based reviewed who trashes it in a review.

I have a copy of the earlier CD edition of Stan Getz: Dynasty, which includes "I Remember Clifford," a song omitted from both the original album and later single CD reissue. Near mint, $15 including US shipping. Payment accepted via Amazon gift card.

Two of the harder to find items: Stuff Smith Sweet Swingin' Stuff 20th Century Fox LP 3008 I was actually given this copy in a batch of records from a listener's estate. I've never seen it again anywhere else, as I'd like to have one in better condition. Stuff Smith Live in Paris, 1965 France's Concert 120 I'm pretty sure this was available on CD as well, though the label disappeared a couple of decades ago.

Jazz collections and estate planning
Ken Dryden replied to The Red Menace's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I doubt that there is an appraiser in our community who is up to the task at setting a fair value at a reasonable fee for my collection. -
I own that CD, which indicates it was a jam session.

Don Was on Blue Note
Ken Dryden replied to Lazaro Vega's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Blue Note, Concord and Verve are all shadows of themselves, having deleted much of their valuable catalogs and not much resembling jazz labels any more. Alfred Lion, Carl Jefferson and Norman Granz would not be pleased. -
Duke Ellington NYC City Hall reception for Duke Ellington 1965-08-02
Ken Dryden replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Artists
The 1965 performance has a listing in the Ellington discography Ellingtonia, but no listings. The 1969 performance would have been better without Tony Watkins, one of the least liked vocalists to ever appear with the band. At least Ellington didn't call for his dreadful "One More Time For the People," a song that would provoke Cootie Williams to storm off stage in disgust. -
I have the Freddie Redd Piano Jazz, too. Anyone interested should pm me. NOT FOR SALE.

If you mean this one, I don't think it has been issued on CD. 1201 Music is selling a download of a portion of the original 2 LP set. http://www.1201music.com/store/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=598%3Amarion-brown--duets-vol-1&catid=52%3Aalbums&Itemid=73

Well, I think the past 30 years has certainly borne that out, with the "note perfect" recreations of the Miles Davis classic quintet sound, etc. Have heard a few thousand mainstream CD's from the last three decades that are technically proficient, but ultimately sound bloodless to me. Started with the rush by the majors to find the next Wynton Marsalis, and then extended to the first Wynton Marsalis when he decided that his recordings should be history lessons pulling in 60 years of styles (yawn...). I love "Live At Blues Alley", but everything since then has been different degrees of problematic. And the majors were looking for well-trained youngsters in spiffy hats, and a lot of pretty good musicians were recording as leaders years before they should have (Antonio Hart, Geoff Keezer, Javon Jackson, Roy Hargrove, David Sanchez, Joey DeFrancisco, the list goes on and on and on). All technically proficient, all ultimately dull in those recordings. Interestingly, one young guy who did catch my ear, Christopher Hollyday, instantly faded away into oblivion. And another group that seemed above it was Blanchard/Harrison, because Blanchard is such a good writer. But overall, something has been lost by academia replacing the apprentice system. Of course, there probably aren't enough opportunities to play anymore for the apprentice system to work. But I look at how strong someone like an Eric Alexander has been on his leader dates, and remember that he spent years playing with Charles Earland, etc. before recording as a leader. I emceed a show in Chattanooga around 1990 when a young Brad Mehldau was playing with Christopher Hollyday (both men were born in 1970, so it might have been 1989 for the performance). The alto saxophonist burned out his audience by playing everything uptempo, he didn't know how to pace a set but displayed show technical mastery and played some good solos. Mehldau made a greater impression on me that night.

I used to own the he 2 lp Ulysse/East Coasting 2 LP set, but several minutes of a Mingus solo were excised to fit it onto LP. The Mosaic set restores it.

The first time I went to NYC (1997), I got to hear Pete sitting in for Bill Goodwin with the Phil Woods Quintet. He was a terrific drummer, it is shame he had only sporadic opportunities to work after his continuous rants against fusion.
