  1. The local forensic center has a dead end sign behind it.
  2. I guess you can use the certificate for their overpriced vinyl, though their clunky search function makes it very slow going. I need to allow my subscription to expire this fall.
  3. I met Paolo Piangiarelli at the 2004 IAJE in NYC. He was excited about the young alto saxophonist Francesco Cafiso, as was Phil Woods. He was a good-hearted man who poured his heart and soul into his label.
  4. I don't care about basketball, period... I pretty much avoided the NFL all season, but have watched some of the playoff games. I can't believe how the Chiefs blew it at the end of the first half by not taking the sure points with the field goal as time expired. Their inexplicably poor play in the second half was just as puzzling. I'm sure that Reid and Mahomes will question their decisions during tthe next few months, but they will bounce back and have better days.
  5. Rarely has my name been personalized in an autograph, though it has happened, not necessarily by my request. Two artists who did so were Oscar Peterson (whose beautiful penmanship matches that on some of his recording graphics) and Frank Zappa.
  6. I probably will once I have had a chance to identify more songs.
  7. I've been wanting to do a show on jazz works with hidden meanings but kept thinking it was going to be a lot of work. I am heading into the studio tomorrow to record it for February 6. The show will definitely include Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Jaki Byard, Fats Waller, Charles Mingus and others. Some of the references may be obvious, though not to younger or newer jazz fans, while others may be a bit more obtuse. A few can't be explained in detail on the air, for obvious reasons. Anyone know the meaning behind Bruce Barth's "Song For Nefer"? At least two song titles will be explained by artists, though in one case, it won't be the composer, though you'll hear the composer's recording of the song.
  8. If you upload your collection to Discogs, you can request a download of your collection files from time to time. I've invested a lot of time so I need to do that in case something happens to the company. It is time consuming, particularly when so many releases don't have listings that match what I own, though I sometimes let it slide on marked promos. I have no idea how close I am to uploading everything.
  9. A BFT full of surprises. In addition to the Bill Easely CD, I've got the Benny Waters CD, the Hollyday Brothers LP and obviously, the Gene Harris Quartet CD, but none of the other issued items. It is a bit of a challenge to include an obscure player like Cliff Smalls on an unissued session. Thanks for taking the time to expose me to stuff that I've never heard, or even seen...
  10. I have several Art Blakey shows, some which aren't listed on the website. Pardon the unidentified titles, but at the time I got these CDRs, they had limited or no playlists and I didn't always have time to find the titles. Some of them may be updated with the discs downstairs, I will check in the next few days. I may have a copy of the March 18, 1981 recording at the Roundhouse, London. The info that I have is London without a specific date or venue. unknown title unknown title unknown title How Deep is the Ocean In Case You Missed It [aka Fuller Love] unknown title unknown title > The Theme Art Blakey: drums Wynton Marsalis: trumpet Bobby Watson: alto saxophone Billy Pierce: tenor saxophone James Williams: piano Charles Fambrough: bass 7th Avenue South, New York City, December 21, 1981 New York Little Man Miss B.C. 11. Not to my knowledge, the Japanese cd I have duplicates the lp. I’ll see if Denny Zeitlin has the list of unissued songs handy.
  12. Bill Crow mentioned an incident involving Benny Goodman in his article “To Russia Without Love.”Benny Goodman asked in a concert hall where the restroom was and was told it was up a staircase. He replied, “That’s too far” and proceeded to piss into a nearby trash can backstage.
  13. That was the Baja Marimba Band, as I recall...
  14. Probably interns get the dirty job. My favorite typo was in an Amazon listing, Aki Takase: Clapping Music was listed by them as Crapping Music. I don't know how long it was up that way...
  15. The woman who posed for the Mary Anne Jackson LP cover was the Allen’s housekeeper, she wore some of Jayne Meadows’ jewelry.
  16. In my collection, it fooled a few critics in the day…

    Lew Tabackin

I’ve yet to hear a Lew Tabackin release that lacked “Oomph…”
  18. I don't think there was enough usable material for the normal three CD Mosaic Selects. I think at this point, Mosaic had all but halted its Mosaic Singles program. Too bad, this music deserves to be heard. It would also be nice to have all three Denny Zeitlin 1750 Arch LPs reissued in a set.
  19. I can confirm that as I heard Don Thompson leading a big band in Toronto and playing both instruments.
  20. Or in a hot car?
  21. I've acquired a lot of Tom Varner over the years, but this is a recent addition:
  22. I jumped on the Mosaic Select Denny Zeitlin when it was first released. Denny told me that there was at least another disc of bonus material available recorded during the making of the Columbia LP Live at the Trident, though it has never been reissued anywhere. I've sent him a few broadcasts that I either recorded or acquired over the years of concerts, including a Berlin date with bassist David Friesen that contains one of the earliest performances of the "Slick Rock" suite.
  23. Steve Allen used to join Terry Gibbs on vibes on his show.
  24. No idea, though I may have to get out the bio of him that I bought in the 1970s or 1980s. As far as I can tell, Helen Grayco could still be alive, thought she would be up there in years. I am not sure what year she was born He did that Christmas LP for Verve.
  25. Spike Jose’s wife. She sang ballads to give a break from the band’s antics. One time in the middle of her feature, Spike sprayed her in the middle of her back with a seltzer bottle and she chased him into the audience. The crowd roared, thinking it was part of the script, though it wasn’t.
