Came home from work today to discover the front door of our house had been forcibly kicked in, and the entire interior door frame completely shattered in a hundred pieces, with lathe and plaster visible for 6 or 8 inches around half of what was left of the door frame (and bits of plaster everywhere). On the plus side, nobody was home when it happened, nobody got hurt, both our cats are fine (and they didn't get out), and the only thing they took was our home computer. They rifled through a bunch of things, but couldn't find anything else that was valuable enough for them to bother with. I'm sure they were in and out of the house in less than 3 minutes. I know others here have had home break-ins before, even quite recently (Joe, that I remember in particular), and in our case -- nothing was stolen that can't be replaced. Still, to walk in and discover our front door completely obliterated (well, the frame, not the door itself), was quite a shock, and it was well over an hour before I could find anyone who dared take on that kind of repair work. (Typing this on our 7-year old, "Windows ME" machine that hadn't been booted up in about a year -- since we'd gotten the brand new machine, which was the one that was stolen.)

I think late November and December are always going to be a bit slow around here. You've got the holidays, and the ramp up to Xmas in particular. Give it another shot sometime after the 1st of the year.

Should Rooster keep his current Avatar???
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
just because this thread is about a car and your avatar shows some more and because I was wondering why it took so long for the thread to load: isn't 3.8MB a bit much for an avatar? Geez, I had no idea it was 3.8MB!!! (I didn't know the board would allow you to link to anything that big.) I'll change it quick... Done!! Went back to the image that started this very thread -- for old times sake. -
Do you think these will catch on in America?

When the all-electric version of the Smart car comes out, I will be incredibly tempted. I think I've read it'll be out in the U.S. by 2009 or so. -
As far as wish-lists go, I absolutely agree with Contrasts and Natural Essence (especially with all or most of "The Trainwreck" as bonus material). ...and also that unreleased McLean session (which also has Tyrone Washington on it, and Woody Shaw too!! - if I remember right). I don't care how bad that drummer was (or how bad Jackie thought he was), I would really like to have some reevaluation of the value of that session (Note to Chuck: I didn't say we have the "right" to hear it -- but rather, I think it deserves to be reevaluated for possible release). It can't be any 'worse' than that one Andrew Hill session with Woody and Sam Rivers (Hill Select, disc #1, the first session on that disc) -- which is sloppy during most of the heads, but absolutely kicks ass in terms of the energy and fire in the solos. That crazy Hill/Shaw/Rivers session is probably one of my all-time "top-20" Blue Note dates, seriously!!

Miles - On the Corner and Beyond
Rooster_Ties replied to Aggie87's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Just got my copy of the Corner box tonight, and put the first disc in moments ago. Had one of those 30% off coupons for Borders, which brought it down to something like $97 and some change. Still a little more than I wanted to spend, but I sure as hell wasn't gonna wait a year to hear this one. Just started reading the notes -- damn, Belden's intro was penned back in April 2000? -- April 2000??? That's closer to 8 years ago than 7. -
I think that whole Panthalassa Laswell disc totally kicks ass. Honestly, as an album, I think it hangs together much better than Get Up With It. If Laswell sequenced a number of other similar Miles Discs (from multiple, unrelated sessions), with edits and/or remixes (and re-arrangements of material) like Panthalassa -- eventually I'd probably pick 'em all up (at used prices, of course).

I've got 1 and 2, and have been meaning to pick up 3 and 4 for ages. Perhaps they ain't perfect, but I love 'em. And as live documents of a working band, they're priceless.

If I'd seen cover without any explaination, I would have easily bet somebody lunch that it was a photoshop spoof. Don't know weather whether to or -- so I'm doing some of each.

Thanks Jim. Haven't heard the samples yet, but on paper anyway this'd be right up my alley. Will try to grab one soon as well.

Just stumbled on an unexpected TV interview with Joe Henderson, from Charlie Rose's show on PBS, round the time of the release of Joe's "Porgy & Bess" (not my favorite Henderson album, I'll just leave it at that). The link goes to an entire 60-minute Rose program, and the interview with Joe starts at the 41:00 mark (you can click on the bar above the words "Share Favorite Add to Playlists Flag", roughly about the "i" in "Favorite" – to skip right to the part with Joe. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CkGkqC1OjME# (Charlie Rose: November 6, 1997) Shame it's with Rose, who's bluffed his way through every "musician" interview I've ever seen him do. The worst I recall was Rose interviewing Björk, asking her to describe all the sounds in her head that she couldn't get out, and then pushing her harder with the same question after she couldn't decribe them to his satisfaction. Rose also interviewed Leonard Slatkin once, asking him about "Mozart and Haydn" (pronouncing it "HAYden"), asking about what the D.C. National Orchestra happened to be playing that weekend, as if it was the most important concert ever. Criminally embarrassing, but Slatkin toughed it out (as did Bjork). The clip closes with Joe and John Scofield playing something from Porgy & Bess (can't name the tune right off, which I know, is a crime). The music starts around the 50:30 mark. Posts to this thread need NOT be broadcast interviews -- just any old interview footage will do, from any source.

I'm about 98% sure that's a contrabass clarinet that Anthony Braxton has in the pic. (And I'd be shocked to learn otherwise.)

1 tune - 1 artist (your favorite composition, one per artist)
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Recommendations
I'll start... Joe Henderson -- Black Narcissus Sam Rivers -- Beatrice -
Similar to the 1 album - 1 artist, the essentials thread, this is for favorite/essential TUNES. NOT recordings of tunes per se, but the compositions themselves (as compositions). Name an artist, and name ONE tune written (or co-written) by them that is your choice for THE best (or YOUR favorite) composition in their entire book.
-
You get to call the tune, but you also gotta name your price... The band chooses to "record" it in some fashion (of their choosing), and makes it available to the larger 'Big O' community somehow (download, CDR, real CD, whatever), and you pay the piper (a.k.a. the band) just as much as you offered them to record it. And the band doesn't release it until "enough" (or "all" - their choice) of the funds that were promised, are actually received. (I ain't kidding around here, some real money's got to change hands. Doesn't have to be a lot (although the more the better), but you/we gotta pay whatever it is we promise.) Pretty simple, I think. The band alone decides what they want to record (and what they don't want to record). if you like somebody ELSE'S idea -- you can chime in with your OWN vote for the same tune, along with YOUR price to go along with it. And if somebody else likes it too, they can vote with THEIR pocketbook too. Then, if the band chooses to record it, then EVERYONE who named that tune individually pays whatever corresponding price they each personally attached to their vote. Let's say I pick some crazy Andrew Hill tune (yeah, right, on organ). And I say I'll pay $75 to record it. Somebody else likes the same crazy idea (same Hill tune), and then THEY'LL chip in $25 more if the band records it. Then somebody else likes the same idea too - and they say they'll chip in $35 more for that same tune. And somebody else too -- same tune -- and they'll put $50 (more) where their mouth is to hear it. That's a total of $185 the band should get upon the completion and release of that one tune (recorded by whatever means the band chooses). The only thing I ask is that the band somehow make these recordings available to EVERYONE here for some reasonable price. Either "free" or "cheap" downloads, or else send out a CDR with a bunch of these kinds of tunes for about $10 or $12 or so (or whatever makes sense cost-wise). (Or I guess the band could just e-mail mp3's of the tunes to only just the people who actually ponied up the cold hard cash to get them recorded. But then where'd the fun be in that??) I haven't run this idea past anybody in the band, so I have no idea what their response will be. Jim may very well accept or reject this idea (in total) for any reason, or change the parameters of the process however he and the band likes. I just wanna get our favorite organ trio some scratch, and I also wanna hear what this board wants to hear, but we have to want to hear it SO BAD that we'll step up and pay for it. Again, the band can accept or reject ANY tune, for ANY reason, and the "highest bidders" are NOT in any way guaranteed to ever get recorded. Let's see how fast this board can 1) line the pockets of our fabulous musician hosts, and 2) get them to whore-out for us like never before.

Joe Henderson 8CD Milestone Set For $28.99
Rooster_Ties replied to sidewinder's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Holy crap, Jim. That is THE best Joe Henderson album ever!! Or at least just as good as ANYTHING the man ever recorded. Yes I'm biased. "Power to the People" was one of the first two Joe albums I ever had (along with Mode for Joe). Still, I solidly maintain that "Power to the People" is one of Joe's very finest hours. Money back guarantee. -

Reggie Workman has a daughter Nioka Workman, who plays cello (she played in the string quartet that's on Greg Osby's "Symbols of Light") (If I remember correctly.) -

I can understand not filing charges, but couldn't the dog at least have been required to take a firearms safety course?
