Any chance there's still any unreleased Reid Miles covers???
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Discography
It even got as far as the cover art for 'Back To The Tracks' appearing on W61st inner sleeves, I believe. I'll check later but I'm sure I've seen this one. Pretty sure the cover art for "Blue John" also appeared on an inner sleeve or two - back in the day. (I remember the linernotes mentioning this - although I'm away from my copy at the moment, otherwise I'd check personally.) -

Yup. That's my understanding. (I'll let others here smarter than me about these things comment on your other questions.) But as far as I know, these (above) are all honest to goodness REAL Reid Miles covers that never saw the light of day until years later. Cool. -

Thanks Chuck!! Can't believe I forgot those three (well, the Turrentine and Parlan anyway). Lush Life has never been on my radar, for some reason. Here's the covers... -

Ah yes, HERE TO STAY -- forgot about that one. And I didn't realize that Tina Brooks cover fit this catagory -- thanks!! Edit: Might be handy to have this link handy, as this thread develops... That Japanese site with all the Blue Note covers. -
From the liner notes to the Andrew Hill Mosaic big box (about the last date, with Sam Rivers)... Was there a cover prepared as well?? We all know there are a handful of dates that had real, legit Reid Miles covers -- dates which weren't released at the time. I'm thinking of the following (and please add any others I've missed). (Not 100% sure the Leo Parker cover is a Ried Miles, but I think it is. And in case any of those hot-linked pics fail, I've got the covers for "Blue John", "Dimensions and Extensions", and "Rollin' with Leo" displayed.) Anyway, could there be a Ried Miles cover for the Andrew Hill date with Sam Rivers????? What other dates (that haven't ever been issued as individual CD's yet), could possibly have Ried Miles covers in the vaults -- if they were "prepared for release" -- back in the day??? (And what other "issued long after the fact" Ried Miles covers have we gotten in the last 35 years??)

The original title was to be "Change". I say let that stand. Chuck - you're not by chance confusing the "supposed to be issued as" title of the Hill Select trio session -- which was to be called "Chained" -- are you?? Your statement above is the first I think I've heard that there was any able title associated with the Hill/Rivers session (that last date on the big Hill Mosaic). OK, I just checked my big Hill Mosaic booklet, and there it is... GREAT session, by the way. I forget which tune, but there's one that always get me when the drummer (J.C. Moses) does this crazy funk backbeat thing for about 8 bars, right in the middle of a tune with otherwise more "conventional" Hill-session-type drumming (meaning more free). Kills me every time!! This post is too long already (for me to look up what I'm about to ask and post the answer here) -- but what other kinds of dates was J.C. Moses usually on?? He's not a name I know very well off the top of my head. Was this one of his few "out" (or "out"-leaning) dates??

Kind of a nice thing to have, but more importantly (to me), I'd like to see "Compulsion" session available on the market again, so more people can have and hear it. Exposure and availability are my priorities for some dates in particular (and in the case of Hill, every date). For instance, shortly after I bought the Larry Young Mosaic, I was TOTALLY blown away by the "Mothership" session with Lee Morgan. To say that this was a life-changing event would be going overboard, but it certainly made me stand up and look at jazz organ a completely different way, and look at Lee Morgan differently as well. I lobbied long and hard (over and over) for it's release as a Conn (back on the old BNBB - I used to mention "Mothership" every chance I got), because I believed it to be an important session (and for me, one of Lee's most important sessions, and certainly one of Larry Young's most important sessions), and I felt it was just wrong to have such great music out of print, and nearly totally inaccessible to anyone but the already converted. That's why.

Agreed -- except BN won't ever respond, and MC has at least passed along info to us about cases like this before. (Didn't he provide the replacement info for the bungled mastering of the RVG of "Dialogue" a few years ago??) Unless I've got my wires crossed, I think MC has been helpful in some situations like this in the past.
-
Wow, an RVG?? Forgetting various issues people might (or might not have) with the sound of the RVG series -- I'll be VERY happy to see this session released on CD (finally!) by itself. Any idea what other RVG's are gonna be released in March (and/or February and/or April)?? -- since they seem to be coming in sets of 6, spread about a month part (for a total of 12).

I have one of the Ra Horos ("Other Voices, Other Blues"), and would buy it on CD in a heartbeat. Stunning, to put it mildly -- especially Michael Ray's contribution. (It's a quartet date, a rare small-group session for Ra.)

Grant Green's Born To Be BLue cd cover
Rooster_Ties replied to Dmitry's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Was there a Japanese issue ever?? (CD or LP) with a different cover perhaps?? -
Would e-mailing the Mosaic general info e-mail address be of any help?? If one specifically addresses MC by name (in the body of the e-mail), doesn't he typically get the message? (He has in every case I can think of personally -- I usually have one or two inquiries of him per year.) That'd be my suggestion. Edit: Only one or two people need to e-mail him - and report back what the procedure for replacement books might be. (I don't have a crapped up copy (at least not yet), so I suggest somebody who actually has one should be the one to e-mail MC about it.)

And my one experience with purchasing a copy-controlled disc... (the European version of this disc... ...that couw got for me when it first came out, before I knew there'd be a US verison without copy protection) ...is that the disc copied just fine, without ANY(!) troubles or errors whatsoever, on my PC. Made a couple copies, in fact, just to be sure it wasn't a fluke. What the hell?? Crappy non-standard format with built-in errors -- and the copy-protection scheme didn't even phase my completely "off-the-shelf", "bare-bones" "same-software-as-was-preloaded-on-my-PC-when-I-first-got-it". What's the point??

Andre 3000 of OutKast to "rework" Kind Of Blue
Rooster_Ties replied to trane_fanatic's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Not to be hatin' on US3, but I'd have to concur. -
Reportedly (from MC, via Kevin) Andrew wanted "Compulsion" reissued first on CD (as a Conn) -- before "Dance With Death" and the session that would later be known as "Pax". As it stands, I think there are only two sessions from the big Andrew hill Mosaic that have yet to see individual reissue on CD -- "Compulsion" - and the date with Sam Rivers (first issued under Sam's name, half of the double-LP "Involution" - if I remember correctly). I'm betting both those Hill dates will get issued as Conns within the 3 or 4 sets of Conns, or maybe even as soon as two.

Every eBay listing should have a story like that to go with it. -
Andre 3000 of OutKast to "rework" Kind Of Blue
Rooster_Ties replied to trane_fanatic's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Andre 3K's involvement don't scare me none, but Wynton's sure do!! -
Speaking more generally, are there any other "original instruments" (owned by some since departed "name" musicians) that are being actively (or semi-actively) played by an active musician today?? For instance, it seems like I very vaguely remember that Wallace Roney may have (and play?) one of Miles' horns. (Or did I just imagine that somehow?) Any other "famous horns" in active use today?? (Jazz, not classical.) I guess I should extend that drums, bass, piano, guitar, and anything else you'd care to name.

Mosaic big box sets
Rooster_Ties replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Did a quick count, and I think it's 14 - but I have a hunch I'm overlooking one. (Or maybe the one I'm overlooking is the Don Cherry set that I've traded, since the last of this material recently became available as a Conn). In any case, 14 or 15. All of them were purchased new, except for my Larry Young box -- bought on eBay (without a box or booklet, though I've since bought a slightly water-damaged Young booklet from another board member here -- still no box), and I also bought my Lee Morgan box used -- from a board member back on the old BNBB. Both were for pretty reasonable prices, not more than about $20 per disc as I recall, or maybe closer to $22 or $23 at most. All of my sets are of Blue Note material, with the exception of Woody Shaw and Gerald Wilson, FWIW. -

I'll have to count 'em when I get home. I'm guessing something like about 12, maybe 15 tops. -

box sets with extended/expanded LIVE material??
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Discography
FWIW, what I'm really looking for are extended (expanded) LIVE recordings buried in the middle of larger box sets made up primarily of STUDIO material. The three examples in my first post are all good examples. The Plugged Nickel and Cellar Door sets are entirely made up of live sessions (as is the Lee Morgan Lighthouse mini-box). They're good to know about, certainly, but not really what this thread was aiming at. (but thanks anyway!!) -- Rooster T.
