  1. Edit: This thread is primarily about expanded LIVE material lurking in box sets. Was thinking about the Bill Evans Verve box (14 discs?), and the (was it?) 2½ to nearly 3 hours of live material found therein (all from one date, in California - if I remember) -- much of which (I think) was otherwise never released before the box. (Used to own it, hated the packaging, and sold it -- and really wished I had that live material again, as a release all by itself.) And there's the 10-disc Roland Kirk Mercury box (which I just got), and its 2 hours of live material, greatly expanded from it's only legit release on LP (which must have been about 45 minutes long, probably) -- though I understand this has come out in Europe on Lonehill (or some such murky label). And the Joe Henderson Milestone box, which for years was the only way to get all of the Joe and Woody Shaw "Live at the Lighthouse" recordings (though that material has since recently come out as a full-length release unto itself). What other extended/expanded LIVE dates are lurking in box sets?? --> Dates with added material that is (or was) otherwise unavailable until the box came out (and please mention any corresponding issue of the same material, if it's since come out as an expanded release, separate from the box). Must be some that I'm not aware of, since I only discovered the Kirk when I finally got the box just a couple weeks ago (from a fellow board member - thanks!!!)
  2. Serious question: why couldn't (and didn't) they just patch in 5 or 10 seconds from an earlier mastering job -- the K2, if it's also such good sounding and very recent remaster? It would seem (at least to me) that to do otherwise, would be to willfully create an inferior product. It's not like they haven't done things like this before...
  3. You forgot to tell Sangry to get off your lawn, Chuck.
  4. The jury's still out on that one, as I recall.
  5. Don't overlook Glasgow.
  6. Why in the world, if there is a severe tape defect that develops since the last remastering job - do they not sample the offending segment (which may be as little as 10 seconds long, or 5 seconds, or whatever), and paste it into the new remaster (just that 5 or 10 seconds worth). The patch-job might not be perfect, but it would HAVE to be better than a full-blown sonic fuckup the size of a small tank. Seriously, why not?? I've not personally heard the new reissue in question - but it sounds like the results would have been better even if they had sampled those particular 5 or 10 seconds from a VINYL copy, and patched THAT in - instead of the spot where the tape got mangled.
  7. From an eBay auction... The AMG reviews closes with...
  8. I wouldn't start bidding too quick. It's probably over 50 years old, so it'll be back out again in Europe in no time.
  9. Salt on watermelon?? NEVER!!! But my wife loves it that way. My grandmother always did too. Doesn't make no sense to me. Why in the world would you salt something that's sweet?? I'm not saying salty and sweet never go together, but not when it comes to fruit -- at least not in my book. I don't think I've ever even tried it with salt before. Just seems wrong, always has, and always will.
  10. BJP didn't pen any of the tunes, so would there have been checks over the years?
  11. And for those who might not have heard, the Tolliver date also includes BILLY HARPER!!!
  12. OK, I know we rehash this thing about once every two years or so on these boards. And in between times, I always forget the details. How did Patton's name get on this date in the first place?? Assuming it is Young, what happened? What's the back-story (again, probably, sorry) - ?? PS: My recent (2003) Savoy issue doesn't have a recording date (or none that jumped out at me just now when I looked). Do we even know these details? - or is this one of those dates we're luckly to pin down to just the year it was recorded?
  13. You're right!!
  14. Couldn't remember what the original cover looked like, looked for it, and here it is, FWIW...
  15. COOL cover!! Never saw that one before, that's for sure. Thanks for posting it.
  16. That's Ernesto Hoost, a Dutch kickboxing champion. He travels a lot to Japan for matches, I think, so he's probably fairly popular there. Here's another in the "Japanese humiliation humor" category: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gNsDp2N6yM...m?link_id=18151 I'd be pissed.
  17. Modern parallel: Greg Osby. He doubles on soprano and clarinet from time to time. I really love Osby's clarinet playing (as much as any player I can think of -- perhaps because he sticks to the lower register most of the time), and every time he plays soprano, I wish he chosen clarinet instead (or better yet, alto clarinet!!). He's a pretty good Soprano player, but the instrument just isn't my cup of tea. (FWIW, I think Osby's clarinet playing is far superior over Don Byron's -- but that's a whole nother topic right there.)
  18. Great news!!!
  19. Local TV weather dude said tonight it's gonna be mother-fuckin' 106 degrees out tomorrow, in the city (the national weather service "offical" forcast is for what it'll be like at the airport (they're saying 97 degrees), which is dozens of miles from the central city here in KC). And he said it MIGHT even get up to 109 degrees here in the city tomorrow. I work outside in my current job, usually 4 out of 5 days a week, and I can tell you this heat is totally kickin' my ass. I may buy an outdoor thermometer tomorrow morning on my way to work, just so I can see for myself how damn hot it gets out there around 3pm or 4pm. Almost 110 degrees -- WTF????
  20. I do too. Simple. Clean lines. Good design. edit: the logo, that is.
  21. I'm having a tough time figuring out what tuning system they used. Can anybody else tell? Equal Temperament or Just Intonation??
  22. Good design, overall, but I'm not sold on the new logo. Maybe with time. Any chance you could do slightly more of a ying/yang kind of thing with the logo, where the left "C" and the right "backwards C" were the same size (height-wise), but only offset vertically --- again, kinda like a ying/yang symbol?? (Only with the dot still in the middle.) I can't place what it is that bugs me about the logo, but it seemed out of balance somehow. My suggestion (above) would make it radially symmetrical, and would fix the balance problem too (if, in fact, that really is a problem). Don't know if that would help, but it was my first thought.
  23. For what little it's worth, the only soprano I can stand much of (and I have to be in the right mood at that), is Wayne with Miles circa '69/'70 - and specifically live recordings from that era. (Wayne's soprano work in the studio doesn't do that much for me either.) Just ain't a horn I've ever dug much - sorry.
