  1. I'm in Kansas City (so's she), which is pretty flat (well, mostly). But you're right -- it's funny that there would be a dealer in Colorado -- given the hills and mountains there. By the way, I figure I'm probably at least 2 or 3 years away from getting something like this, maybe even 5 years. How ever long my current vehicle lasts ('93 Honda Accord sedan, with only 150K miles on it at present), which could easily be 5 more years (it's in great shape).
  2. Saw one of these at the community recycling center today here in KC. Quizzed the owner about it in great detail. She owns one of the very first 100 in the entire country (had it only three weeks). She had nothing but great things to say about it. Had to get it in Colorado, as that was the closest dealer at the moment (and of course had it delievered -- since it would take over a month to drive from Denver). She's thinking about even opening her own dealership here in Kansas City, or so she said - and I think she was serious. Can't imagine very many times that both my wife and I would need to be going highway speeds on the same day. Her daily commute is less than 10 miles (round trip), and mine is barely 4 (round trip). Nearly everything we do on any kind of frequent basis is within 10 or 15 miles of where we live, and 98% of the time we venture out any farther, we'd always have the Prius to go in. I've always said we really only need 1½ cars, at most --- well, 99% of the time, anyway.
  3. Well -- in that case... Also issued in mono (because it was recorded that way), are the two volumes of live Miles and Gil Evans recordings from 1961 (if I remember correctly).
  4. Just got the Grant Green Club Mozambique date (finally), and got to thinking about what other "modern" dates (recorded after 1960), have been released as MONO only -- specifically because the Stereo masters were lost, or otherwise damaged or destroyed. The only other date I could think of (off the top of my head), was the Andrew Hill Select date with Sam Rivers (the one withOUT Woody Shaw) -- i.e. the last of the two sessions on disc #3. That, and the Mozambique date were the only two I could think of -- but surely there are some others I'm not aware of, or am forgetting.
  5. Yeah, but Bush bashing -- TO BUSH'S FACE -- is a vintage that's quite rare.
  6. I would SO love to hear some of this stuff sometime. Does the station have an on-line feed?? - by any chance?? Edit: Or can anyone suggest any other on-line radio-stations with this kind of material??
  7. Never was a Conn (I know, that's already been said), but the earlier McMaster was (if I remember correctly) taken from an LP. Is the new RVG also from an LP??? How does it sound??? Would have to be an improvement on the earlier CD issue, but how much of an improvement is the question.
  8. I've got these on their way to me in the mail, as I type... Curtis Mayfield -- Sweet Exorcist / Got To Find A Way . . . CD . . . $11.99 Curtom/Snapper (UK), 1974 Condition: New Copy A Curtis Mayfield double-header -- totally great all the way through! Sweet Exorcist is a wonderfully wicked album from Curtis -- one that's not nearly as famous as his Superfly set, but which is every bit as great! The groove here is lean, mean, and totally righteous -- a bit more stripped-down than some of the rumbling funk of other Curtom efforts, and served up with a fluid groove that makes the album a killer from start to finish! As with Superfly, there's a nice blend here between uptight funky tracks and some more laidback soul -- showcasing both sides of the Curtis Mayfield sound of the 70s -- the brash society-changing soul, and the mellower, more fragile voice that first came to prominence in The Impressions. Titles alone tell you the vibe of the record -- and they include "Ain't Got Time", "To Be Invisible", "Kung Fu", "Suffer", "Power to the People", and "Make Me Believe In You". Got To Find A Way is a great album that's often overlooked amidst the flurry of early 70's releases on Curtom, but which still stands as one of Mayfield's greatest from the 70s! In fact, we'd say that the album's one that we enjoy putting on more than most -- because the songs are less familiar, and not nearly as played-out as some of Curtis' bigger hits. The production style's still the same -- with plenty of rumbling funky soul, arranged by Rich Tufo in that classic Curtom mode -- and you can't beat Curtis' vocals on songs like "Mother's Son", "Love Me (Right In the Pocket)", "A Prayer", and "Ain't No Love Lost". CD features a total of 13 tracks in all -- and great notes on the albums! Impressions -- This Is My Country / Young Mod's Forgotten Story . . . CD . . . $11.99 (Item: 431754) Curtom/Snapper (UK), 1968/1969 Condition: New Copy View Cart 2 of our favorite Impressions albums ever -- both righteous late 60s sessions, back to back on one CD! This Is My Country has The Impressions wearing their politics much more on their sleeve than before -- with a cover that shows them standing in the rubble of the ghetto, and a title that is both a bold proclamation of ownership, and a sad comment on the state of affairs. Curtis Mayfield's pen is in perfect form here, and the group hits that perfect mix of sweet soul and politics that make these late 60s efforts some of their (and Curtis') strongest work, with harmonies that far surpass the earlier years, and which still kind of make us wish that Curtis hadn't gone solo, because we just love the sound of his sweet raspy voice next to the deeper style of Fred Cash. The set's filled with great cuts like "This Is My Country", "Loves Happening", "Fool For You", and "Stay Close To Me". Young Mod's Forgotten Story is a key transitional set -- a record that has the group opening up the politics that were often hidden by spiritual metaphors on earlier ABC albums, into a righteous soul groove that hints a lot at the overblown direction Curtis Mayfield would take in the 70s, yet which still retains all the tightness of the group's earlier work. Nearly every single cut's a classic -- and the group outdid themselves vocally, especially Curtis, who always makes our heart break on this one! Donny Hathaway and Johnny Pate handled the arrangements, and tracks include "Choice Of Colors", "The Girl I Find", "Mighty Mighty (Spade & Whitey)", "Soulful Love", and "Seven Years".
  9. Can't be done. This is one of those cases where Dusty Groove type descriptions really are necessary and probably justified to get any kind of sense of the music..
  10. I have Yanow's Trumpet book, and have found it both useful and an enjoyable read. Have given it as a present too (to my uncle, who plays trumpet -- and frankly knew and knows a whole lot more of the earlier players than I probably ever will).
  11. Here's the third one...
  12. Wasn't this their "first ever live" date together?? If not, one of the first -- I think I've read. Here's some footage to sample.
  13. Sounds like "all of the above" to me!! (And on-line samples of an LP-only item?? -- Wow!! )
  14. I'm tending to agree more and more as this thread develops. Allen, your reaction probably wasn't off base, but posting it publicly probably was (IMHO). If Jim won't delete this thread (he's pretty good about not being heavy-handed like that), would you consider deleting it yourself?? I think a number of us here would appreciate it. (Thanks!) Edit: Or at some point, I certainly hope Jim will decide to close this topic.
  15. Regina Carter??
  16. Now you need not imagine...
  17. Good question. I've wondered that myself.
  18. Here's one sample (HERE) that I just found, although I'm having trouble getting it to play (damn Real Player clips only seem to work half the time on my machine at home).
  19. Does anybody here think these recordings include vocals?? Reading the description carefully, they appear to - but I'm not entirely sure. (And if so, they appear to be in Japanese.) But the back cover down below seems to imply that there aren't vocals. (Description from Dusty...) But then when I look at the back cover (which I found here), a vocalist does NOT appear to be listed in the credits. I don't suppose somebody can scare up some on-line samples of this particular release, by any chance?? I've done some searching myself - and come up dry (so far). Even samples of the singer's voice (on any other record) would be potentially helpful. There are a number of discs by him (Yuzo Kayama) at Amazon, though none have any on-line samples.
  20. Electric Vindaloo...
  21. Just noticed that now -- and if only I'd noticed earlier, I would have been spared a number of wrong sites that Google led me to. (At least that's my story, and I'm stickin' to it. )
  22. Some googling, and this appears to be the magician's site, below. Her name (or stage name) is Ursula Martinez. Best as I can tell, she appears to be a serious performance artist -- and although there is some nudity here and there, non of it is the least bit graphic. http://www.ursulamartinez.com Edit: And here's the page about the act in question... http://www.ursulamartinez.com/texts/hanky.html ( "...and Salmon Rushdie's all female celebrity stag night." )
  23. IMHO, non-gratuitous female nudity is often among the best kind there is.
