Rooster_Ties replied to Kevin Bresnahan's topic in Re-issues
Took me a second to get it. Jeff, you crack me up!! -
Here's some more compilations, with moderately cool covers...
-
Thanks, couw, missed that thread the first time, somehow...
-

-
Some more I hadn't ever seen before today...
-
I really like some of these (and not others, if you know what I mean), and there are several here that I'd never seen before just now. Enjoy!! Go here: http://gokudo.co.jp/Record/SPRec/ -- and scroll down a bit, below the LT series (the ones with the white borders). Here's a few that were totally new to me...

By the way, here's all the covers. There'll be a new cover for "Dance with Death", since it was part of the white-border series. And I guess there could be a new cover for the Horace Silver?? -- or maybe not, and they'd use "Phase 1" for the CD cover?? -- who knows which. (My guess is that we'll get a modified version of the "Phase 1" cover, with the phrase "That Healin' Feelin'" replaced by "United States of Mind" - or something similar.) Fun thread. Any more ugly reissues from the 70's???

October 2004 Connoisseur Release (Proposed)
Rooster_Ties replied to Kevin Bresnahan's topic in Re-issues
Yeah, I sure do wonder what happened to the Booker Ervin/Woody Shaw "Back from the Gig" date?? It was on Michael's 'very early tentative list' back in December or January. Don't know anything about those Horace Silver sides, so I can't comment, except to say that the one or two tracks I've heard 30-second samples of (from the recent Horace retrospective set), don't make for something I'm gonna buy on day #1. "Dance With Death" is a decent album (some like it, and some don't), but in my book, it's always good to hear someone like Charles Tolliver playing in Hill's world. "Dance With Death" is nearly as 'inside' as Passing Ships (or at least in the same ballpark), so people here should take a chance on it. I didn't love it at first, but it grew on me after a while. I had a strong hunch "Easterly Winds" was gonna be in this next Conn round, or at least the one after that. Every time a Japanese copy came up on eBay, it would always go for top dollar - so that was some crude measure of demand. I've never heard it, and have always been interested - since Lee Morgan's on the date. I'm darn glad to see "Of Love and Peace" on the list. After "Mother Ship", it's my next-to-favorite of Larry's last four BN dates. Yeah, it's a little rough around the edges, and I've heard it suggested that it could have really used another rehearsal before the actual date (which I kind of agree with). But, never the less, there's an excitement to "Of Love and Peace" that I quite like, roughness and all. The version of "Seven Steps to Heaven" is really fun, and the whole date mostly works for me (more than it doesn't). And, of course, it's great to hear that some more Larry Young will be more easily available again soon. Wow, I love "Contours", nearly as much as "Fuchsia...". This'll be great to have out as a single, finally. One of Sam's finest. Can't say I'm overly excited about "Now!". I used to be (on paper), before I ever heard it, but I heard bits of a vinyl copy over at a buddies house last fall - and it's some pretty cheezy stuff, or at least what I heard (a couple full cuts, and drop-the-needle on the rest). Don't know anything about the bonus material, can anyone else here comment?? Are there vocalists on it too?? -
Is "The Bop Shop" still around?? I was only there once, to hear a friend's quintet play. (I should probably say "friend", up until that point I only knew the guy on-line, on a music-board similar to this. FYI, a trumpeter named Jeff Beer.) Anyway, is The Bop Shop still around?? The Bop Shop 1807 W. Division Street Chicago, IL The one time I was there must have been in about 1991 or 1992.
-
Does that include a free airline ticket too??? Thanks for thinking of me!! Do try to catch the Sun Ra Arkestra too - I see they're on the bill as well. Been severl years since I've seen them (three times under Marshall Allan's leadership), but they've always been somewhere between "really good" and "great" -- and they're always at least "really interesting" (which is frequently at least as important as being "good/great").

To sell out a club as a jazz artists.

OK, then, a sell-out who WASN'T someone with local ties, like Karrin. Edit: Or who ISN'T a singer. -

When was the last time anybody sold out anywhere here in Kansas City??? Or, rather (especially), anybody that played in a club. I think there might have been a few sell-out shows at the old Drum Room (now closed), but that's been well over 7 or probably 8 years ago. Has anything ever sold out at The Blue Room?? (Nothing I've ever been to there, I know that.) Maybe a couple shows back at the old Club 427 (which is also now closed, for well over 5 years now). Dave Holland was here in KC in early 2001, in a small theatre (don't know the exact size of The Folly, but I'm guessing 800??), and the place was barely half full, ane maybe closer to 1/3rd full. I do no get what the problem is with Kansas City audiences. WTF??? -
***UPDATE*** from CNN.com

By all mean, get "Tender Moments". It's one of McCoy's very best, IMHO. 4 and 1/2 stars, at least (in my book).
-
My thoughts go out to you and your family, Randy.

What's the story on the lable Mainstream?? The only Mainstream titles I know of are several Blue Mitchell discs from the early 70's (at least one or two include Joe Henderson). I'm pretty sure Minstream hasn't ever been released on CD anywhere (not even in Japan??). Can anybody confirm this?? Was this label only active in the 70's?? Who else was on Mainstream?? Other than the Blue Mitchells -- what's worth having from the Mainstream catalog??
-
Thank you for mentioning Ingrid!! I only have a couple discs of hers (so far), but I have been very impressed with what I've heard.
-
It's nice to get a "nice" e-mail like this.

Funny you would mention Sioux City. Here was my response to the message in the first post up above... -
I won't quote everything he's said in this thread, but I'm totally with Sangry on this one. Mildly amusing, at best - perhaps - but it struck me as mostly being very mean-spirited.

What's the best jazz autograph you have??
