  1. Yeah, I've never liked that pic of Hill either. And why the hell that's the AMG bio-pic for Hill, I'll never know!!!
  2. If you can't find one otherwise, there's a record store here in KC that never sends back their unsold copies. I think they've got 75% of the issues from the last 6 months or so, and probably the one you're looking for. (They have a smattering of issues going back about a year. I think maybe the much older issues (from last year) just 'walk' out the door, over time, if you know what I mean.) Hollar if you need me to pick it up for you, and send it your way. EDIT: Looks like you got it covered from 7/4.
  3. I've only got Volume 1, but I do have the smaller-footprint BN cover book that came out recently. (So perhaps I have seen a few of these before, but not more than maybe just once -- and I sure don't remember any of these that I've posted in this thread.)
  4. Somebody in Seatle help Jim out. My wife and I were there last June, and found "$5 off" coupons for the EMP. Took the sting off the $20 ticket price ($15 was easier to swallow), and it really was worth it. We were seriously NOT gonna go, since $20 seemed pretty steep to me -- but I'm really glad we went. You get these interactive museum "electronic docent" things, with headphones -- and you can get expanded explainations about literally probably 1,000 things in the museum. Jim, make sure you budget at least 3 or 4 hours for the EMP. We were there about 3 hours, and I could have probably spent the whole day there (though my wife was 'done' at three hours). Their Hendrix exhibit was very cool. I used to be a Hendrix nut (when I was in high-school), and there was a whole bunch of Hendrix stuff/info/artifacts at the EMP, that I was only vaguely aware of. I probably spent at least an hour in the Hendrix area alone. Again: Can somebody get Jim a few of those "$5 off" coupons??? We found them in the back of some local free guidebook, that I think we might have picked up from among the hundreds of brochures that were in a rack at the Seattle Aquarium. It was a kind of thick book, about the size of a Cadence mag (4 inches by 6 inches, maybe). Jim, it's expensive, but it's worth it. Oh, the food in the EMP restaurant was very expensive, so you might plan to try to eat somewhere else. It was good, but pretty darn pricey. (I'm sure you can get your hand stamped, and come back - or something like that.)
  5. Anybody got their complete BN discography handy?? (Mine's buried in boxes, as we're redoing our library.) Who's on the bonus material from the "LA Philharmonic" date?? Any vocalists?? When was it recorded, relative to the "Now!" sessions. Off to see if I can find any of this info on the AMG, thought their info is often spotty for Various Artists kinds of releases, especially vinyl-only stuff from the 70's. (Or thanks in advance, if any body can provide the session info for me.) EDIT: Not much in the AMG. Just the tracks, really, and the fact it was released in 1978. 2. Slow Change performed by Bobby Hutcherson 3. Now performed by Bobby Hutcherson 4. Hello to the Wind performed by Bobby Hutcherson 5. Now (Reprise) performed by Bobby Hutcherson
  6. I've said it before re: Blue Note: WM vs. Norah --- WM vs. Van Morrison --- WM vs. Prince, etc... And although I'm definitely half kidding, I'm also half serious.
  7. No shit!!!
  8. Keep those covers commin', guys. Wish there were more source pics of Andrew from the 60's, to use in proposed covers.
  9. Yeah, the Rivers is really the best of the whole bunch -- much as I personally like the Hill and Young dates. For all of you who want the Ervin/Shaw date, which one of the six Conn titles announced in this thread, would you be willing to do without in October, in order to get it???????? (Meaning, to get "Back from the Gig" in Oct., we gotta give up one of the other six.) For me, it'd probably be "Now!". Or maybe the Silver, but that seems like a lock, since it's been in the pipeline for something like 6 months now (and I'm sure they won't back off on it now).
  10. EDIT: Love how you lined up all the "H" letters, Jeff, in the title. Nice touch!! B)
  11. Pretty much what Jim just said. Some Prince is great, some less that great. But I've heard fair bit of bootleg material, and some of it is DAMN fine. I'd sample it first, and there's an 'OK' chance I'd buy it, sure. (There's just as much chance I wouldn't buy it either.) BUT, it wouldn't bother me being on Blue Note, and would probably bother me less than WM being on BN.
  12. Were there any other TOCJ CD covers that were unique to Japan?? Like this one??
  13. Haven't heard but the three full-length tracks available from the BN website. They pretty much make my skin crawl, to put it kindly. OK, maybe they're not as bad as that. BUT, compared to how good they try to be, vs. how good they actually are..... .....they really do go nowhere fast. I think Spontoonious has a promo of this one, if I remember right. Hafta borrow his copy, so I can rag on the whole album with more authority.
  14. Took me a second to get it. Jeff, you crack me up!!
  15. Here's some more compilations, with moderately cool covers...
  16. Thanks, couw, missed that thread the first time, somehow...
  17. OK, what's the story on this one?????? EDIT: And then there's also this too...
  18. Never saw these before either...
  19. Some more I hadn't ever seen before today...
  20. I really like some of these (and not others, if you know what I mean), and there are several here that I'd never seen before just now. Enjoy!! Go here: http://gokudo.co.jp/Record/SPRec/ -- and scroll down a bit, below the LT series (the ones with the white borders). Here's a few that were totally new to me...
  21. Wow, I never saw that "King" of the "Hill" before.
  22. Woah!! Where the hell did this cover come from??? (Click on the cover itself, to see a larger version)
  23. By the way, here's all the covers. There'll be a new cover for "Dance with Death", since it was part of the white-border series. And I guess there could be a new cover for the Horace Silver?? -- or maybe not, and they'd use "Phase 1" for the CD cover?? -- who knows which. (My guess is that we'll get a modified version of the "Phase 1" cover, with the phrase "That Healin' Feelin'" replaced by "United States of Mind" - or something similar.) Click on each cover to see a larger version. Click on each cover to see a larger version.
  24. Fun thread. Any more ugly reissues from the 70's???
  25. Yeah, I sure do wonder what happened to the Booker Ervin/Woody Shaw "Back from the Gig" date?? It was on Michael's 'very early tentative list' back in December or January. Don't know anything about those Horace Silver sides, so I can't comment, except to say that the one or two tracks I've heard 30-second samples of (from the recent Horace retrospective set), don't make for something I'm gonna buy on day #1. "Dance With Death" is a decent album (some like it, and some don't), but in my book, it's always good to hear someone like Charles Tolliver playing in Hill's world. "Dance With Death" is nearly as 'inside' as Passing Ships (or at least in the same ballpark), so people here should take a chance on it. I didn't love it at first, but it grew on me after a while. I had a strong hunch "Easterly Winds" was gonna be in this next Conn round, or at least the one after that. Every time a Japanese copy came up on eBay, it would always go for top dollar - so that was some crude measure of demand. I've never heard it, and have always been interested - since Lee Morgan's on the date. I'm darn glad to see "Of Love and Peace" on the list. After "Mother Ship", it's my next-to-favorite of Larry's last four BN dates. Yeah, it's a little rough around the edges, and I've heard it suggested that it could have really used another rehearsal before the actual date (which I kind of agree with). But, never the less, there's an excitement to "Of Love and Peace" that I quite like, roughness and all. The version of "Seven Steps to Heaven" is really fun, and the whole date mostly works for me (more than it doesn't). And, of course, it's great to hear that some more Larry Young will be more easily available again soon. Wow, I love "Contours", nearly as much as "Fuchsia...". This'll be great to have out as a single, finally. One of Sam's finest. Can't say I'm overly excited about "Now!". I used to be (on paper), before I ever heard it, but I heard bits of a vinyl copy over at a buddies house last fall - and it's some pretty cheezy stuff, or at least what I heard (a couple full cuts, and drop-the-needle on the rest). Don't know anything about the bonus material, can anyone else here comment?? Are there vocalists on it too??
