  1. Yeah, I know that -- but why the hell is it being rereleased on vinyl??? THAT'S FUCKED UP!!!!! (if you'll pardon my 'aric' moment).
  2. Yup!! So that means we'll need 5 copies shipped to me here in Kansas City, PRONTO!!!!!!!!!! -- one for me, Free For All, Eric, Spontoonious, and one for couw in Germany. One of you guys got change for a $50?? Also, I'm this close to opening a brand new thread about this, with a call for suggestions of tunes for you guys to include on the CD. You can use or ignore our suggestions all you want, but the voice of the people must me heard!!!! ( Seriously, B3 - you should open a thread about it (not me), and present the idea on your own terms, and solicit ideas for suggestions of tunes for you guys to cover, and include on the CD. You might be surprised what we come up with!!! And yeah, you might also be afraid of what we come up with too!!!!! )
  3. Just volume one, or were there any of volume two?? (I've got 'one', but not 'two'. I've also got the more recent mini-format, that appears to combine both books - in a 7"x7" size book.)
  4. It just never spoken to me. The recent RVG was the first time I ever heard it (I missed the Conn, at least I think it was a Conn before being an RVG) - and it really seemed meandering to me. Maybe my expectations were too high going into it. I haven't listened to it more than the half-dozen spins I gave it in the first month or two after I got it. I should probably dig it out again, and see if my reaction is the same.
  5. And it's never been released on CD???? WTF!!!!!
  6. Motian's entire "On Broadway" series is simiarly amazing. I have all three volumes in their original issue, but I understand they're being reissued the same as "Bill Evans". Facinating takes on standards, which really make you think about them in entirely different ways. Most interesting version of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" I think I've ever heard. (edit) PS: And I say this, despite the fact that I've become less and less personally interested in Lovano's playing (over the years), and I've never been a huge fan of Frisell - though I often find him somewhat interesting. But in the right context (like the entire "On Broadway" series), I think they really do work some magic.)
  7. I said it before up top, but I also think this is a pretty decent date. No better (but no worse) than probably the 'lesser' 30% of his recorded output in the entire 60's. If I didn't already have it, and it had just come out as a Conn, I'd snap it up for sure (even at 'Conn' prices).
  8. B) B) B) B) B) So, does anybody know the origin of the name Ornette??? I don't, and I'm wondering if it's a made-up name, or if it was ever used before the jazz Ornette got named with it. On an unrelated note -- I read somewhere that Oprah Winfrey's name was a mispelling (misunderstanding, or mis-remembering correctly) of the bibical name "Orpah".
  9. B3 - if you don't have "Mother Ship" yet, make getting that a #1 priority. Seriously. You need to hear this one, more than you could ever possibly know. Put it on your next on-line order, or bite the bullet at Borders (ouch!). Or maybe you have this on vinyl, or a burn or something. But if you've never ever heard "Mother Ship" before - git to it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  10. Excellent!! More nuggets for that "tell-all" biography I'm planning to write about the Organissimo guys after they hit it really big, and become huge international stars - known to all the world - even more than Britney, Yanni, and Zamfir --- combined!!!
  11. Anybody know who's on it, and what year it was recorded?? (I don't know my Braith very well, beyond his work on BN.)
  12. Not as disturbed as you'll be when you finally hear it and realise how long you intentionally didn't listen to it. B3 - open that damn thing and put in on. Shit - records were meant to be played. Or find another 'open' one as quick as you can, buy it pronto, and put it on. FYI, it looks like the going rate for this one in Mint condition is about $20, sealed or not. Couple closed eBay auctions... Mint, open ($19.90) Mint, still sealed ($20.50)
  13. Anybody know for sure??? I could see Monk changing his name, and/or coming up with the "sphere" himself. Did he???
  14. SOURCE Cup mistake nets punter $2.6m November 13, 2003 A MYSTERY punter walked away with a cool $2.6 million dollars after a TAB operator incorrectly entered his trifecta bet on the Melbourne Cup. The punter phoned a series of trifecta bets in on the Melbourne Cup and one particular bet, a $6 box trifecta 20 times on the winning combination of Makybe Diva, She's Archie and Jardine's Lookout, was mistakenly entered 203 times. Instead of costing the punter $120 the bet was worth $1218 and as the customer elected to not have his bets read back to him was forced to honour the bet win or lose. "This punter is one of our larger phone punters and he was having a series of bets on the Melbourne Cup," TAB Limited's public affairs manager Peter Fletcher said. Fletcher said the punter could not be identified publicly but is well known to TAB Limited. The windfall came to light yesterday when Warren Wilson, TAB Limited's chief executive, appeared on radio 2KY responding to rumours about the mistake. "Warren went on 2KY to confirm the story was accurate," Fletcher said. "(The punter) is a customer who bets in large amounts and doesn't elect to have the operator call back the bet. "He wanted a box trifecta 20 times on the Melbourne Cup but the operator keyed in 203 times on the combination." The trifecta payed $12,895.00 and instead of receiving about $250,000 the punter contacted TAB Limited when he found $2.6 million in his account. "He thought there was a mistake with the account," Fletcher said. "But he is the beneficiary of the winning bet even though it wasn't the bet he wanted." The Daily Telegraph
  15. Another try... Looking for discographical corrections about the "Fresh Sound" Lee Morgan material recorded live in 1970. (See my two 'real' posts, several posts above this.)
  16. The only Donaldson I have (or have every heard) is "Good Gracious" - either as a leader, or as a sideman. It's a very good record, but I haven't been dying to get more -- although I probably will sometime, when the time (and price ) is right!!
  17. I'm not sure I've ever encountered any reference to anyone else named Thelonious. Is it otherwise an obscure, but previously documented name?? (Prior to Monk having been named Thelonious??) Also, on that same subject -- Ornette sure is a unique name, and one that I've never seen in reference to anyone other than the Ornette. Same question: was this a 'made-up' name?? - or had anyone ever been named "Ornette" before Ornette was??
  18. Yeah, but what kills me is his middle name. What an amazing name... Thelonious Sphere Monk. B) Ultra cool!!!!!!!!!!!!
  19. Thanks for the link, and the suggestions. I have nearly everything Moran's every recorded (including most of his sideman appearances), but I've never heard of Noah Rosen. Always new music and new musicians to pursue!!!
  20. I was looking for a particular Andrew Hill quote with Google, and found this paragraph from an on-line review of "Judgement!": So I go to the AMG, and found this bio of Iyer (CLICK HERE for bio), and there are reviews of several of his albums. They all look good on paper. I've never heard of this guy. Should I have??? The AMG guide says he's worked a bunch with Steve Coleman, and is kinda in the M-BASE camp.
  21. I'm sorry, what were you saying??? I generally agree. For most people, the notion of sitting down and listening to instrumental music (of any kind), for anything longer than about 5 minutes, is probably pure torture. Then again, I surprise myself at the degree to which going to hear Mahler's 7th Symphony (which is over an hour long), has kept my attention each of the two times I've heard it performed live. (But even one movement into a Mozart or Hayden symphony, and I start to fidget, big time!!) I think part of it is TV, and especially the younger "MTV" generations (of which I'm almost a part - I'm 34 years old), have been raised to have attention spans that last about 5 or 10 minutes. And when it comes to television news, we all have become ever so used to soundbytes of 20, 15, 10, or even closer to 5 seconds. When was the last time you heard a segment of a political speach that lasted more than a minute?? (Other than on C-SPAN, or maybe PBS) Most classical music, and I would argue much jazz - is about delayed gratification. That deeper connection you feel with particular tunes, or particular soloists - that only comes with repeated exposure (and at least some focussed listening). I think this is especially true of classical music, where it often takes a dozen or more listens to a large-scale work, before I can even begin to get 'inside' it. (And not just modern works, but even the big works of the 19th Century.)
  22. I wouldn't downgrade it as much as Eric. (Frankly, I think Leeway is my least favorite Lee Morgan date - for what it's worth.) Or another way to put it - it's a more solid date (in terms of every track being relatively good) than Hank Mobley's "Reach Out" (which suffers from two very lack-luster pop covers). Yeah, "The Rajah" may not be the best Lee Morgan ever, but if you find it used for $9 or $10 -- I'd definitely snap it up. (Or even $12, if you feel like it.) I paid about $12 for mine (on eBay, with shipping), and I wasn't disappointed with it.
  23. What a thread!!!
