  1. I'll miss them if they drastically change their profile. Some of the greatest bargains I found on emusic: CT - 2 T's for a lovely T for about $4 Braxton Iridium set for $12 AEC Live for 30 cents Die Like A Dog Complete FMP recordings for $5 Coltrane - Live Trane the European Tours for $14 and many many others.
  2. Looks like the crew bailed out on the emusic ship. It's fun reading the forum: people swearing up and down trying to see if any mods are at the controls
  3. I'm in Canada, and same thing here: it only makes sense to buy big box sets from Amazon.com sellers now, for single discs the shipping charge is unreasonable.
  4. Just got banned over there for "spam"...
  5. Still on the last chance list, so I pressed the button on this one. I've seen posts about this set from 2003, so last chance might mean the licence is running out.
  6. Last chance, so I had to push the button...
  7. Any tuba solos out there?
  8. We have to keep the elitism coefficient of this forum from getting too high. It's a thankless job, but somebody's gotta do it.
  9. Best thing to do is to visit local audio dealer and listen to the new/used speakers they likely have set up. Bring your own favorite music. Take notes on what you like, go home, research the internet for fair price. Go back next day and make offer if there is something you really liked. Don't be afraid to offer less than the sticker price and haggle a bit. Good luck!
  10. It's great for free jazz.
  11. I would love to see your new releases in all-analogue vinyl or hi-res digital (sacd).
  12. They're trying to keep it under the radar, but this must be the highly rumoured about 100,000-cd box set that will come in a giant replica of Miles' head with interchangeable sunglasses. And you can keep the delivery truck.
  13. I can hardly wait until November: http://www.amazon.ca...i/dp/B00ABNQJ74
  14. Back in high school the only Mozart work I could listen to was the Requiem. Bach, no problem, Mahler, Stockhausen likewise, but Mozart seemed like a lightweight, more fit to come out of a musical box or to help sales in a fine china shop. I mean, Eine kleine Nachtmusik?!?.. It took me a long time to get it, and seeing Peter Shaffer's Amadeus (the play) multiple times helped a lot.
  15. Thanks all for the recommendations. Did anybody ever top Sun Ra's Complete Detroit Residency set on pure magnitude?
  16. I recently aquired Art Pepper Complete Village Vanguard and the Miles Davis Plugged Nickel on Mosaic, and I like very much the idea of having a complete (or almost complete) record of a substantial live date or set of dates. I know there's the Pepper at Ronnie Scott's I have my sights set on, as well as several Sun Ra sets (Horseshoe Tavern and others). I already have Miles Cellar Door sessions (not complete but good enough). Oh yes, I also have Braxton at Iridium, Cecil's 2T's set, and looking to get at least some of the Berlin 88 cd's. What other complete (or almost) live sets do you recommend?
  17. Just started to make my way through the new box that showed up today on my doorstep: Miles Davis Complete Plugged Nickel (Mosaic), and yes, it's all it's cracked up to be! I listened to the first 4 sides, and the highlight so far is the first appearance of "The Theme".
  18. I admit to not really loving her famous Mozart and Schubert recordings. And that's putting it mildly. I'm not an Uchida fan either, nor are Mozart's sonatas my cup of tea - and that's also putting it mildly That may be because you haven't heard Horszowski playing them yet?
  19. The Christoph Eschenbach set on DG is really good, and at the price it's available right now on amazon everybody should have a copy. If you don't insist on modern sound, look no further than the Mieczyslaw Horszowski set in 2 volumes on Arbiter. Probably out of print, but available in mp3 format from emusic.com.
  20. Some of the greatest Bach on record can be found in the prewar recordings of Josef Szigeti, one issue is on Biddulph, there may be others. Edwin Fischer's Well Tempered Clavier is wonderful as well. For the Brandenburgs I like the Busch Chamber Players, Benjamin Britten and Reinhard Goebel; some unique versions of the large scale works: B minor Mass conducted by Enescu, Furtwangler's Matthaeus Passion.
  21. Yes Schnabel is the best, and best heard on the Pearl transfers.
  22. I love the Brautigam set, and his instrument sounds wonderful in these recordings, not dry or clunky at all.
  23. In my experience the early 60's pressings sound good in an organic tubey sort of way. My copies are less than mint but still enjoyable (and can be had for much less money if you don't insist on mint). I also have have the Heavyweight Champion vinyl set, and while okay, they are not as involving as the earlier pressings. While looking for these be sure to pick up the cd versions from late 80's early 90's (before the remastering) which can be had for very cheap and sound great, imo better than the Heavyweight set.
