So "bass instruments or drums had much to say that I cared about" but you want albums with no bass? Did you forget a "not" in that sentence? I'm a bit puzzled, but seem only me, the others seem to get what you say, so ignore at will... In the two basses thread there have been some mention of bass duo albums, in case you "do care about". Marks Brothers, Holland/Phillips - fine stuff. Should I thrown in Dino Saluzzi albums on ECM? I guess not ... The Bechet/Spanier Big Four? No drums, but bass. There's then the Max Nagl Big Four with Steven Bernstein, Brad Jones and Noel Akchoté (t/as/g/b). The Gene Krupa Trio. Drums, piano, sax - a line-up still heard this day in several bands that have been mentioned (Tim Berne, I'll add Ingrid Laubrock). Obviously, there's the various Jimmy Giuffre projects ... and the Brötzmann Trio with Schlippenbach/Bennink and no bass player. But I'm not sure any of this is on topic.

Had the (CD) single in the mail yesterday and played it on repeat for at least an hour ... the b-side, "Foxey Lady" from the Band of Gypsys shows, as far as I know not available before (or at least not on the official MCA/Sony/Hendrix Family releases) is terrific! Will order the new disc soon, too, I guess ...

Yes indeed. I've got big issues there, but this isn't the politics thread, so let's keep it at that. I guess I still ought to check out some of Origin's music eventually ... I've also heard some live material with Chick replacing Roy Haynes' regular piano player in the mid noughties, and he was very good. Plus I enjoy the music he made with Joe Henderson, ca. 1980/81 (Mirror Mirror on MPS, the great live album from Montreux Chick put out on his own label, and there's another one ...) ... But still, my favourite Corea is the early one, roughly "Joan's Bones" to "Circle" and "Trio Music". The Complete "IS" set was quite nice an addition to the other favourites ... actually I was hoping Mosaic would do a Select of his UA material, Circulus etc. (when I proposed it, Cuscuna thought it was a sound idea ... but we all know Selects are no more, so I guess I got to at least pick up that 2LP set from the seventies ... saw it somewhere, not that cheap, but should be in good condition, so ...)

Yes, I felt indeed a bit uncomfortable throwing them in with the others, but they have a rather cheap look often anyway ... I wouldn't know.

The Flamingo 3CD set might be the better/cheaper option for those who have the first Proper set, I guess (not sure I really caught all that's on it in the listing above, but it's fairly easy to find out by comparing tracklistings). I added no links, as I assume all of those discs, Acrobat, Proper, Jasmine and whatever weirdo label put out the Flamingo (there's a thread about that set somewhere here, I think!) are PD labels and hence links would be an infringement of the first amendment or some such

Since I did some comparing for a friend already: CD1 & CD2: contained entirely in the first Proper set CD3 #1-9: contained on "Jazz Genius: The Flamingo Era" (3CD), cheapo set, too, also on a previous Acrobat "Some Of My Best Friends Are Blues", #1-5 also on a Jasmine disc billed to the Jazz Couriers, "The First & Last Words". CD3 #10-CD4 #5: "Jazz Couriers in Concert": contained on the same Acrobat disc just mentioned, as well as the Tubbs Avid 2CD set, and also previously available from Fresh Sound on its own, too CD4 #6-8: contained on a Jasmine disc also containing "Tubb's Groove" (adding an alternate and two takes of a blues, all not available elsewhere, not in the Propers either). That Jasmine disc is titled "The Eighth Wonder", and I don't yet have it ... CD4 #9-CD5 #2: "The Couriers of Jazz" - also on the Avid set CD5 #3-16: "London Jazz Quartet", rather smooth stuff, not that much jazz content, part of the Flamingo 3CD set CD5 #17-CD6 #3: another Jazz Couriers album, contained on the "First and Last Words" disc CD6 #4-9: "Tubby's Groove" - opening the new Proper disc, also on the Avid set, and (with the three bonus tracks) on that Jasmine Tubby World Wonder disc.

Oh, so those are Tubbs tracks without Laine, then? Misread your post, sorry! Hm, if they're *really* good, that and the Spillett liners might justify ...

Oh well, I'm just making fun a bit ... but I think intelligence of cats is really overrated by all those pro-cat folks who hate dogs. But I do think our cat has some kind of relation to me ... much more so than to mère ubu for sure, as it was me who took care of her when she was small, picked her off the trees when she couldn't get down on her own etc. But it's also a very independent cat, on some days all we see of her is when she comes for food in the morning, and then she might return at midnight, demand food and be off again until next morning ... lucky she still is around, as there are plenty of roads and reckless drivers around. One of those caught our last cat, which we only took over, but which I loved dearly, too. I even started a thread here when we finally found out, a week after her disappearance, that she was indeed hit by a car ... actually drivers who hit animals are bound to report that, but obviously no one bothers about some cat. That was very, very sad - and as cynical as it might sound, the best cure was getting a new cat (some of you here stated just that in said thread), which is the current one (gee, how's that for sounding cynical?!), which again actually is "my" first real cat, raised and been here since she was a puppy, stolen from her mummy who nearly bit me to death when I took her ... I never saw such rage in an animal before that! All my leg and one arm were totally scratched and bitten! But then she had long started to push off the kittens and lost any interest, only when people came to pick them up, she turned into a fury. Normal, I guess, but I never witnessed that before.

Cats are much dumber, but they're more fun, too ... and they're blatantly brutal, too. And totally not capable of any kind of loyalty. But one big advantage is they're easy-maintenance and self-cleaning (well, mostly). Liability insurance generally does not pay for what your cat breaks as they consider cats non-domesticable ... and right they are, in most cases (including ours).

Same here, though all on CD ("Tubby's Groove" on Avid, "Return Visit" as part of the big Kirk box, the rest from ReDial and Impressed/Repressed). Only missing those Cleo Laine tracks ... but I'd also be interested in the liner notes! And obviously this box is musically excellent! Great chance for anyone who slept on Tubbs ... a load of his very best music in one place and for a ridiculous price.

hm, isn't there any found footage of baby Macca fron earlier so that could be changed? It's really outrageous the way it is now, wouldn't you think?

I grew up with dogs, now have a cat, love both, but need no kisses from either. I find it frankly rather disgusting and still remember this thread from back in the day, when I decided not to post anything, but since it's back up, here's my opinion (when I want yours, I'll give it to you )

Can anyone actually tell me who it is that is reviving the Classics label? And are they selling their discs anywhere or don't they even try? I see amazon.com has plenty of these assumedly available again titles with release dates in late January, but none are actually available there, and Worlds Records isn't an option for more than a moment, alas ... (they were too expensive for me, mostly, but I did order from them a couple of times).
