Lou Donaldson is definitely one that I have too many discs of, compared to my estimation (or lack thereof) of his music. Sure, he's a good bop alto player and he did some fine organ gritty stuff, too... but later, he went on playing the same two or three numbers, and I never quite got into his sound, either.

I wonder if there are players who are better as a sideman than leader? As if the player thinks "It's not my name on it -- it won't 'cost' me anything to take chances..." When it comes to his own name, he plays it safe: "Don't want to scare anyone away..." Freddie Hubbard to me sounds a bit like that... I grew to like him, but one or two years back, his name would have come to mind immediately, with respect to the topic of this thead! I don't know if he's better as a sideman than he is as a leader but I personally prefer Oscar Peterson much more as a sideman than I do as a leader. I'm also on the same page with Clark Terry. "Swahili" is the only title I have in his name. If you can lay hands on it, get Ed Thigpen's "Out of the Storm" (with Terry, Burrell, Hancock and Carter). Amazing album, and no, neither Burrell nor Terry marrs it!

I think I first heard his jazz chops on that George Wallington ten-inch album on Blue Note (paired with the Frank Foster album in that short-lived CD series). Great player, whenever he was allowed to blow! r.i.p.

It's good. And as a bonus it has a 4-tune Bo Zieff arranged session with pretty special line-up (t, frh, bcl, bsn, cello, b). But is the Zieff material alone reason enough to get it? I already have the Sextet material on the expanded Chet Baker Big Band CD. Hard to say... I have the old Big Band CD, too (never got the remaster of that one)... I'd say if you really like this kind of experimental stuff AND if the price is right, get it.

Well, don't expect any more RVGs anyway, David! Some classic stuff on that list... the Farmer, the Chaloff, the Henderson, the Ornette, some of the Chet Baker, Jackie's Bag, the Hills, the Burrells, the Mobe, Silver's Trio... and finally, the Nat Cole 3CD set is highly recommended, too!

Gee, I see myself buying BB the fifth time... - first I had the old 2CD (French "Jazz Originals") - then I got the 4CD set - then after discovering it had glue on CD1 after many years and only getting a CDR as replacement from crappy Sony Switzerland, I bought another 4CD set from someone here (which had glue on CD1 as well and I got the money back and presented it to a friend, whom I had - so it would actually be BB #6 - earlier given the new 2CD set as a gift already) - then I got myself the newer 2CD set as well, in order to have a real replacement/CD for the defective CD1 of the box And now? get the Deluxe 2CD/1DVD set for a price almost as cheap as the 2CD set I got a mere one or two years ago? Or spend a whole lot of $$ for the big sucker to get another CD with a rare (and I'm certain great!) live set? Not sure yet... I guess I'll wait some and keep the eyes open for a good offer, eventually... Edit: reading Daniel's post above, I should possibly have kept the old 2CD version to have the original mix... ha, life sucks!

It's quite good, really! And the second disc is fun as you hear them straightening out stuff... sort of like a window into their work shop there.

I'm very disappointed that the regular Legacy Edition won't include the Tanglewood set. To get that I'd have to buy the Anniversary Edition with the LPs that I don't even need. That says: a) the regular Legacy Edition (which I assume is 2CD + DVD, which I liked above) doesn't have Tanglewood b) to get Tanglewood, you have to get the Anniversary Edition (whatever that is, but not the 2LP + 2CD + DVD edition which doesn't have Tanglewood) confusing? I bet... maybe ShowsOn could help us out?
