organissimo: 2000 - 2010
king ubu replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
Gee, sorry to read this! I love all your CDs, guys! Of course, life moves on, and you obviously *had* to grab that chance with Janiva, Jim! I only recently bought a CD of hers (just because of you getting that gig!) and love it a lot! So, thanks for all the music, and best of luck to Joe - and to Randy, too! -
All Monk : The Riverside Album - WTF????
king ubu replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
cover: not much more info from where I got the pic, price there is given as 49€, date of release Aug. 10, 2010. Ok, to add some positive vibes: this is glorious music for a lot of the time, and the lesser parts are still worth a listen, to say the least (I'm talking of the first two trio albums and the final two live quartet albums, in case). What you get in between: "Brilliant Corners", the live date with Griffin, the studio sessions w/Coltrane (Monk with Coltrane and even more so "Monk's Music"), the "At Town Hall" album w/large band, and "5 by Monk by 5" (with Thad Jones added to an early incarnation of what would turn into the long-standing quartet with Charlie Rouse - you get Sam Jones and Art Taylor in the rhythm section there) is mighty, mighty fine! Then there's the solo stuff, of which "Alone In San Francisco" is my favourite. Also there's the live stuff from the Black Hawk (with Harold Land and Joe Gordon added to the regular band), which I'm not yet very familiar with... So, this should be a *great* deal for anyone who doesn't yet own much of this music! That's for sure! -
Not a bad lineup: Roy Eldridge, Kai Winding, John LaPorta, Warne Marsh, Lester Young, Teddy Wilson, Terry Gibbs, Billy Bauer, Eddie Safranski, Max Roach, Billy Eckstine. I have the session on this double CD from Verve (big Billy Eckstine fan here!) I've been eyeing that one for a long time... have one in my basket now! The Fremeaux compilation is also on my huge wantlist - I bet it's excellent!

All Monk : The Riverside Album - WTF????

If you burnt it as MP3s to a DVD, would it all fit on one disc? If you'd do MP3 @ 1.784 kbps, it would also fit onto one CD, I'm sure -
I never thought "Straight No Chaser" was any bad! And funny enough, in the context of the 2CD set collecting all of Monk's Columbia solo material and including the full "Solo Monk", I found that one pretty good all of a sudden, too!
-
I hope that doesn't just include "Thelonious in Action" and "Misterioso" but also the great tape with Coltrane (which can be found running at correct speed in the Complete Monk on Blue Note 4CD set).

Belated best wishes, Tom!

There was a 2CD set with the Smith/Gillespie/Peterson sessions - half of the Mosaic: an album with Diz (and OP) and two with Stuff and OP. Great! There was also the Verve LPR/digipack of the album with Shirley Horn (the final one in the Mosaic, which contains some bonus tracks if I remember right). The early stuff with Perkins is good, too - might be the hardest to find. 186 Complete Stuff Smith Verve Sessions.doc

Ok... I'll gladly skip though. Annoying, but happily I'm no Ella completist... I'd be living under a bridge with seven bags of Ella discs otherwise, I guess
-
Would that be the same 9 minute version that's on Ella in Hollywood? The contents of that album are NOT part of the box, just in case anyone wonders!
-
just two in stock, but unbeatable price of 20€! http://www.amazon.fr/Twelve-Nights-Hollywood-Coffret-Cd/dp/B002IRBGYC/ref=br_lf_m_1000368703_1_3_img?ie=UTF8&m=A1X6FK5RDHNB96&s=music&pf_rd_p=209525247&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_t=1401&pf_rd_i=1000368703&pf_rd_m=A1X6FK5RDHNB96&pf_rd_r=0V2P4WBDEV5Z0F8Q3V77

Seems they reached their end. Short notes about it in yesterday's press... lack of a larger amount of money prevents Rüegg from continuing. Not sure how bad a thing that is, as to me they went from exciting to highly enjoyable to... well, very good but not something I'd run to hear these days. Sorry to say so, but maybe they just reached the end of what certainly was a great run, with over a thousand shows and around forty albums released. Here's the news (in German and English below) from their website.

All the best, Agustín! Feliz cumpeaños!
-
Yeah, but hardly anyone else played such a bad WC...
-
Na, none left, he's eaten them all
-
Yeah. Pretty "Complete", huh? I should get a refund. Yeah... and I'd still like to get a real disc 1, all they sent me was a CDR and they sold me that as being very, very, extremely ultimately generous of them! I guess they don't expect anyone to hold on to their produce for more than 2-3 years, even if they sell such collector's items!

More of these Original Album Series sets coming up end of July, it seems: Chicago George Duke Everly Brothers Margie Joseph Ben E. King Loudness John Michael Montgomery Tom Paxton Wilson Pickett Rascals David Sanborn Charles Wright Some of the soul thingies look tempting (Ben E. King, Margie Joseph, Wilson Pickett).
-
Gee, that is sad! I hope he had thing settled and the label will go on!

All I can find in my files is the following - I haven't heard it, alas, hence I don't know if the info is accurate and if she's actually on "Blue Skies", singing with Rushing: Count Basie Orchestra September 11, 1948 Royal Roost, New York Radio Broadcast Clark Terry, Jimmy Nottingham, Harry "Sweets" Edison, Emmett Berry (tp) Bill Johnson, George Matthews, Ted Donnelly, Dicky Wells (tb) Bernie Peacock (as) Earl Warren (as,vcl-1) Wardell Gray, Paul Gonsalves (ts) Jack Washington (bs) Count Basie (p) Freddie Green (g) Singleton Palmer (b) Shadow Wilson (ds) Dinah Washington, Jimmy Rushing (vcl-2) X-1 Futile Frustration Good Bait Moon Nocturne (-1) Paradise Squat Blue Skies (-2) The King

What a boring final... there ought to be a rule to make some more fun team the world champion... after the boring seems to me none of the four teams that made the semi-finals actually deserved to win... I guess I'd give the title to Ghana, but of course it's not my choice
-
Maybe brownie can help?
-
I wouldn't bother about the prices - they're great, even 23€ for a 3CD set is pretty much ok in my book!
-
9CD, not 3... the Threadgill was 7. Same format I guess indeed.
