  1. I found this disc in a store last week, never heard of it before, but as I enjoy the 56/57 big band of Dizzy's a lot, it was a no-brainer. Please let me know if you need my index-finger and the disc in order to make sure I didn't just download it. Here's the info I could get from the CD booklet: 1. Dizzy’s Business 4:21 (soloists: Gillespie, Henry) 2. Ann Gillespie 0:35 3. Night in Tunisia 10:21 (Morgan, Golson, Tom Bryant, Grey) 4. Anitra’s Dance 3:23 (Gillespie) 5. Begin the Beguine 7:41 (Kelly, Persip, Dizzy) 6. Ann Dizzy 0:13 7. Yesterdays 3:19 (Jimmy Powell) 8. Cool Breeze 11:55 (Grey, Dizzy, Billy Mitchell) 9. I Remember Clifford 3:59 (Dizzy) 10. False Start Groovin’ High 0:28 11. Groovin’ High 4:51 (Henry, Dizzy) 12. Whisper Not 5:02 (Dizzy, Henry, Golson, Kelly) 13. Doodlin 5:20 (Dizzy, Moore) 14. Hey Pete, Let’s Eat More Meat 13:58 (Dizzy, Powell, Grey, Kelly) with the soloists (listed above), we get: Dizzy, Lee Morgan (t), Al Grey, Melba Liston [she was there, must have, her being in the band is mentioned as one of Dizzy’s conditions to take this US State Dep. job at all] (tb), Jimmy Powell, Ernie Henry (as), Billy Mitchell, Benny Golson (ts), Pee Wee Moore (bari), Wynton Kelly (p), Tommy Bryant (b), and Charlie Persip (d) this means all we don’t know ist wo or three more trumpet players and one more trombone player Anyone has complete info for this release? It's a bit weird that the CD doesn't give it, as the liners are rather well-researched (or copied off someone?) giving historical background on how this band got together and where they went on tour, also giving info about all other known recordings... but then there's nothing specific about the music included. In case it matters, the disc is being distributed by BVHaast, hence it could be this weird OD label is Dutch, too?
  2. Jazz and Jazz, Kenny Clarke and the one by the two guys named Bernard just arrived. Spinning Jazz & Jazz now and it is EXACTLY what I was looking for. Nervous, angular, longhair. Flutes, vibes, and wordless female vocals. THANK YOU!!! You're welcome, TtK! I'm glad it hit the spot for you. I need to pull this one out and give it another spin myself. you two maybe should look for this one: It contains earlier material (1949, 53, 55) and all or most of the solos (even some by Don Byas) were written out by Hodeir. Another very interesting disc! Musicians involved are Bobby Jaspar, Bernard Peiffer, Nat Peck, Fats Sadi, Pierre Michelot, Kenny Clarke and others.
  3. Imperium, MG! The pirates then are CDU and whoever is selling this on the US market. As for Quebec, there's another legal in yurp, illegal in the US release on Definitive, collecting all the BN master takes and the master takes from Quebec's lone Savoy session. Mighty fine music indeed! There was of course the Blue Note compilation "Blue Note Swingtets", which was made up by some sides of Tiny Grimes, Johnny Hardee (incl. the great "Hardee's Party"), and two each from the Benny Morton and the Jimmy Hamilton session, if memory serves me right. That was a great compilation, but still it's a major pain that BN never did put out all of that swingtet material in its entirety...
  4. Wow, great news! So I finally get to hear a big chunck of the Blue Notes then! Thanks for sharing the news!
  5. Happy Birthday, Tom!
  6. Don't mean to mislead anyone. I had nothing to do with the original date but did prompt the reissue by having an online pissing contest with one of the 32Jazz guys on RMB. He mentions this in the notes. Ubu, since your are unaware, do you know this music from some download? No, I went on a 32jazz search when the label went belly-up and was lucky to find about 25 or so CDs, among them the Altschul. It has just been a couple of years that I played them, and I happen to read liners once mostly, when I get a new disc, and not look at them again later...
  7. Thanks for spreading the news, EKE! Good to have sources for McKusick and Tolliver up!
  8. btw, did you change birthdays from 26th to 16th recently?
  9. Another one gone by... happy birthday, have one on me!
  10. I wasn't aware, Chuck - will have to play it again soon! Always liked it!
  11. Oh, sorry - I thought you were asking for an RVG of Now He Sings again, mis-read your post! "Song of Singing", as Chuck said, had only one US issue in the 80s. And add my to the Altschul disc on Muse - it was on CD thanks to Joel Dorn and his 32jazz operation.
  12. Just sent in a mail!
  13. That's a great idea, Kyo! I'd be all over such a Select!
  14. yeah, and Sam Spade, too!
  15. No need at all. There was a late 80s CD and then a few years ago the CD was re-done. No point at all in doing an RVG of that one and releasing the same stuff yet again! As for the current situation, I hope for the best, but then the future of BN seems to be less safe that it has been in recent years for a while now, with reissues decreasing etc. Anyway, I still hope!
  16. If it's a download, I'll go for it again as it involves no additional work - I haven't posted any comments on #51-53, and I apologise for that. Yet I'm still not sure I will be able to post a lot on this upcoming one, but as I said, if you do it the download way, I'd gladly accept a PM with the links once you're done with it!
  17. hey, can we get a close-up of those legs with them smoothe stockings, please?
  18. ordered: Ellington Classics: - 1938-1939 - 1939 Vol. 2 both from abeille musique's sale then also gave a shot at the following two on Amazon and amazon marketplace: - 1938 Vol. 3 - 193-1940 Still no leads on: - 1938 Vol. 2 - 1939 (Vol. 1) Also, to beef up one of the Amazon orders, I added some Jimmy Heath OJCs that I've wanted to get for a looong time: - On the Trail - The Thumper - Triple Treat The only one I have so far is "Quota" and an admittedly illegit copy of the impossible to find "Swamp Seed" - both mighty fine albums!
  19. I pretty much lost interest in Joshua Redman... got some of his discs when I was a newbie and he kept getting good reviews... the two live titles on "Wish" are still those I like most, I think. As for Lovano, I have to agree in general, but also that disc with Schuller I find pretty good! The Caruso I got on sale, and believe it or not, I actually like some of the ideas - though Lovano's sound is as uninvolving as usual.
  20. Can't help you on that compilation, but these Jazz Colours CDs generally seem to be compilations with music taken from earlier Black Lion (maybe also Freedom?) releases. They're cheap and no info is up online usually... I didn't by any of them so far, but I dimly remember there was one by Dudu Pukwana... as many Black Lion titles are OOP, these Jazz Colours may not be that bad a thing, in some cases.
  21. Thanks a lot, Jazztrain, much appreciated! I'll clean it all up, but it will need some time... if someone else feels like it, step ahead! As I said, my source was a PDF of what to me looked like fairly regular CD (jewel case) inlays, with no pics though... they may have been done by someone who like me was just compiling the info (though that someone obviously also had all of that music...), probably to go along with a self-made CDR-transfer of the LP box... I didn't re-group the sessions, just copy/pasted what I got.
  22. Thanks Harold - corrected!
  23. I don't know if this really is all - I got a PDF somewhere (too large to upload) for 15 CDs with all of the music except for the Carter alternates marked with two asterisks (**). I typed up all of this info some time ago, glad to share it here. Of course it's missing release info, so it's more of a sessionography, I assume... and I hope there aren't too many typos in there! If you know of additional alternates or discs that contained more than the box (as is the case with the Carter CD), let me know and I'll change the first post!
  24. That's the Capitol Transcriptions, right? How about the Circle CDs, are those also "must haves"?
