  1. Bill Evans Riverside - disc 7 (starting with the solo session)
  2. I'd say start the discussion, Marcus! I have my first impression comments ready... sorry to say it wasn't all in my taste, but most of it was nice and some was pretty great!
  3. Who cares, really? Things come and things go...
  4. Happy Birthday!
  5. Yeah, but so what? He has other virtues. I'd rather listen to Jon Hendricks off-key than Kurt Elling in tune. But I tend to forgive off-key-ness more easily than most people. I never heard any Elling (in fact Mahoganny is the only singer I've heard some of, years ago... of course Jarrett, too, but I'm not one of his general haters, not at all). Anyway, Hendricks is cool... enjoy him a lot, but then again I don't know much, except some of LH&R (and LH&B, including the fun "Jazz Casual" show), and his great Pacific album that came out again on CD recently.
  6. Yes, a 1941 or 1942 item with unknown band and possibly Young singing... very, very bad sound quality, though...
  7. Pam Grier?
  8. "Lito", Ward's CD on Leo with Woody Shaw, is quite interesting. Woody Shaw on Leo?! Will take a note, thanks for the recommendation!
  9. quiz: which alto player (which is roughly as famous as the ones from the list) is hidden in this article: http://homernews.com/stories/061903/ent_06...art001001.shtml I know... but I won't tell... 20 years, bah...
  10. best drink to get sober: 4 oz Irish Whisky (Jameson is fine) 2 oz honey 2 oz cream
  11. Interesting evolvement here... or evolution? (Jackie mac?) I saw Lake w/Trio 3 and he was soooooo boring, really a letdown, total. As for the Shank Mosaic, I agree with his clemness - very good one! A secret fave here, too! Also Ward can be quite fine (not with Cecil but on some of those live Ibrahim Enja albums from the early eighties he's smokin' and of course he's the one soloist totally in charge of the classic "African Marketplace"). Also agree on earle Warren - much underrated on alto and hated because of his yucky yuck singing... but on alto he's mighty fine, on the few occasions he can actually stretch out a bit... Hilton Jefferson, too!
  12. Pres should have sung more often... I love "Two to Tango"!
  13. Because I guess very few Russians have very much more money than they can use... that's democracy Putin's way, with his Putin youth and other infiltration...
  14. I wonder what they'll actually ship your way - please let us know!
  15. Yes, that one. Only one of his leader albums I have. I don't care that much for the artwork/packaging stuff... of course I like well-done box sets and nice photos, but the main thing is the music... as for Selects, I don't like how they're designed a lot, but with the normal boxes having gotten so big, I think they're a great idea. I like a lot some of those 3CD and 4CD big ones I have (Jacquet, Thad Jones, Sam Rivers, Blue Mitchell, to name a few) and think it's somewhat a pity that these small ones are now only possible as Selects... Anyway, this should be about Pomery... so where could I continue looking for more?
  16. You'll find only few members here are really into any kind of freer stuff... there used to be this very active thread here, but it's come to almost a halt of late: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=5071 The Wadada album is fine (better, I think, than the yellow one on Tzadik). Two I just picked up are the second of Billy Bang's Vietnam albums (liked the first one quite a bit) and one of AEC's Pi Recordings, [sirius calling]. Haven't played them yet, though... Not sure if Kahil El'Zabar goes under free... I also got that live set of his with Billy Bang (the band's made up of Yoron Israel and Ari Brown), where they do that great groovy homage to Malachi. All together though I found the disc too long to really sustain interest...
  17. yes, of course I know... i have 4000 CDs NOT by Mosaic... (and 50 Mosaics...) just I don't think nobody bothers to put out any of Pomeroy's Roulette stuff these days (I have one disc on Freshsound - one of their ugly 80s releases).
  18. Played all four of the Krupa discs plus the 1945/46 Krupa Classics (only Classics I have, recently found on sale) - very nice stuff! Some of the singing I could live without, but there's plenty of good playing by Charlie Ventura (yeah, got to take the Ventura/Phillips out of the shelf again soon!), Red Rodney and Charlie Kennedy. The arrangements and tunes and all are nice, good quality stuff in many cases, I assume... and Krupa is great, most of the time! Glad I got this one (still have yet to play the James stuff all the way through... Willie Smith is the main reason some of it may really be interesting, I gues...)
  19. Interesting thread here... I quite agree with clem & chuck on Spaulding - interesting colour/vibe, and yes, those long lines have a certain charm in a setting they fit in or add something - I like his part in quite a few of those BN albums. About Bunky Green, I don't know any of his early stuff, but I love him with his european quartet (Eric Legnini on piano, Rosario Bonaccorso on bass and Franck Agulhon on drums). His sound is huge by now, and his playing is mature, almost overflowing with emotion at times - the kind of alto sound I love in a mainstream setting. Also he's quite a great blues player...
  20. Sad news I don't have much of his music, though... would be a good case for a Mosaic Select, I guess.
  21. Also all the missing Lateefs, the four Randy Westons, the Patterson/Ervin Legends of Acid Jazz, too...
  22. Is that Andy Scherrer the tenor sax and piano player? Didn't know he also was good enough to record on drums! Wow! Who's Ben Thompson, never heard of him...
  23. disc 2 now - those trio sides are funny... the parody done by Elvin & Stan Getz in one of their Verve sessions is indeed great fun! Just started disc 4 - pretty nice stuff, I must say! Lots of good Ventura and some fine Charlie Kennedy and Red Rodney (up to disc 3, that is) as well!
  24. disc 2 now - those trio sides are funny... the parody done by Elvin & Stan Getz in one of their Verve sessions is indeed great fun!
