I just bought this one on sale yesterday - still have to play it, but from the couple of live recordings I've heard, it has to be good! What's this? A release of you own tape??? And before I forget: welcome over here!
-
There's a new one (haven't got it, though): Then there's this fine one: And more that I haven't heard: this one, for a change, I have - not his best but fine: check this site (it's where I found the jpgs, too)

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?

Try "Christmas with Etta Jones", which I got a couple of weeks ago. Coles is BLASTIN! on "Merry Christmas baby". MG I never play x-mas music... evades me why people would want to listen to that stuff even as part of their jazz listening, too, when you can't escape it anywhere... will take a note though, just in case... thanks -

Have you converted to the vinyl faith ? while I'm no platform agnostic (that's the kiddos watching the latest hollywood bombast on their iPods... won't ever get that far with me, I assure you!) I don't believe in vinyl or CDs... I simply happen to have some vinyl that I don't have on CD, such as the last of the Tina Brooks dates I'm playing right now, and boy is that great! Johnny Coles I've rarely heard in such prime form! Wow! -

Listened to the tentet (Shorty Rogers) date on the last side of the Art Pepper set, and just now session D (with Hawkins!) from the Buck Clayton CBS Jam Session set - vinyl, all of that, also the one that's going on the turntable next: Tina Brooks (prob. the "True Blue" record, not sure yet). -
Great news to me! I love the "Fearless Leader" box and don't have the big 16 CD set... here's hope the third box will materialize, too, eventually (though I gather this here has been in the pipeline during the Concord takeover, which might not be the case with the third one and hence they may just have dropped that plan). Anyway, looking forward to this! Edit: the missing tracks are a letdown, though... I'll keep my "Cats" and "Cattin'" discs, then... The third box would also have the (partial, in that case) Ammons date (or would they include long jams where Trane may blow on the theme and nowhere else? I doubt that) and the one(s?) with Mal Waldron, I assume.

Which Jazz box set are you grooving to right now?
king ubu replied to Cliff Englewood's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Complete Bill Evans - disc 10 - the album with Jim Hall... not sure what to think... "Undercurrent" is also under constant revision, one time I like it, next time I almost fall asleep... tending to do the later here, but I have to work, so it won't happen... nah, it's nice, actually, I'm just not in for *that* quiet music... looking forward to the second album with Manne and more from the Trident gig with Philly Joe! -
McPhee phan here too When the sh*t hits the phan, I'll be there, too! Haven't heard Trio X, though, but McPhee is one of the musicians I have a lot of respect for, and I like or love all of what I've heard of his music!

to me, Ware's about as phony as che was... never got him, really, I'm not sure there is anything there, besides attitude.... (sounds like a grumpy Chuck comment, I guess... only using three times as many words as he'd do)

Sir, I might have a couple of new things to list - will drop you a mail, hope it's not too late for the next update!
-
Congratulations to Mr. Solal! May he continue strong for as long as he wishes! (Hey, we all know it ain't gonna last forever... and in my opinion, that's a good thing, too...)

Continued disc 11 into the first part of the "California Here I Come" sessions - Philly Joe makes a difference! Now back to disc 9, the Town Hall concert - Wise is a fine drummer, unsung. I think I only have him on a few things with Helen Merrill (those great albums with Dick Katz), and he makes an appearance on the "Secret Sessions", too, I think, but that box is the latest addition to my Evans holding and I haven't played any of it yet... lots of Evans still waiting to be discovered here! -

More from the Evans Verve set... the Zetterlund date - fine, but not much more than that - still I enjoy it the Trio '65 album - as good as the Trident club live dates, or a bit better, maybe and now just getting started with the Town Hall dates (disc 9) (leaving out the strings album on disc 8, that is) changed my mind: "Further Conversations" (disc 11) right now -

Almost done with disc 6, now - finally continuing with the Evans box... "What Kind of Fool Am I" has just begun... not a tune that ever stuck to my memory, but Evans does it so nicely (also on the Milestone/Riverside solo session)! Great music! hard to see why Evans didn't like it! -
Just wondering, how many "Newburys" are there? I'm just curious, are the folks at Newbury appreciative (or even cognizent) of the business generated by the Organissimo board? I guess they wouldn't have any way of knowing this, but they should. If you do happen to visit them, please thank them (on behalf, I would expect, of many on this board) for their prompt service and excellent selection. I, for one, have been very satisfied with their service (better than our old favorite Caiman, IMHO). Contrary to Caiman, Newbury only lists stuff they actually have in stock - they delivered all of the 15 or 20 discs I ordered from them, while Caiman delivered none, zero! (I was much more cautious since I didn't think they'd deliver anyhting, so I ordered only 6 or 7 with them.) Newbury is as good as it gets!
-
"Spellbound" I assume? If it's his other OJC I'd gladly take it off your hands!
-
Hmmm .... I always got my money back from Caiman when they couldn't deliver. I guess the availability of Concord/Fantasy items is as unpredictable to them as it is to us. Just never trust the "in stock" statement. I have an order standing for a French classical CD from a Swiss dealer, and they don't deliver nor answer my e-mails for three months now. Caiman returned the money for the very same CD instantly and informed me they couldn't get it. Yes, but Caiman still only sends the money back once you complain and demand it... Sorry to hear about that non-delivering seller! I've ordered two discs, with horrendous shipping, for about 40 $ in march (MARCH!) from an ok looking site, and haven't gotten any replies to my inquiring mails... wanted to post about that for a while now here, but at the moment the name of th site escapes me... sucks badly!
-
That's absolutely ridiculous - if it happens with an easily available disc such as "Moanin'" the sellers ought to be banned from Amazon Marketplace if they don't stop!

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?

Sunday listening included discs 1 and 2 of the zombie Herman box I got a couple of weeks ago - great stuff on disc 1, some good on disc 2, plus the fun dixie and Nat Cole tracks... glad I got it this time! Also played the first two albums (disc 1 and a third of disc 2) from the Elvin set. Never made it farther into that one so far, just wasn't in the mood, but I plan to go on this time... -

where is the best (easiest) place to buy? Probably Amazon - TCB says on their website that they're distributed by Amazon (they also mention Borders and Tower... not sure if Tower is still around and no clue who/what Borders is...) -
August 13-19: Max Roach - We Insist! Freedom Now Suite (Candid)
king ubu replied to king ubu's topic in Album Of The Week
Yes I attended that Paris concert by the Max Roach quintet and the Sonny Rollins trio. It was held at the Salle Pleyel. I was also busy that night making sure that Cecil Taylor would be able to get into the Salle Pleyel. He wanted to hear Rollins very bad. Plus Albert Ayler who would play next at Salle Pleyel had problems at his hotel (lost luggage). The musicians with Roach were staying at he same hotel and I remember that Hubbard was complaining that the the stars of the show (that included Roach but neither Hubbard or Ayler!) were staying at a better hotel! Seemed that a lot of worthy people were in Paris at the same time Oh man, I wish I'd been there, too! You better start writing your book now and digging up all the photos, too - a photo book with some shorter and longer stories in between, how great that woud be! (That's one for the "books I'd read if they'd exist" thread...) -
Now playing Members, Don't Git Weary - and guess what, this (and also Lift Every Voice) is where for me - unintentionally - the focus while listening shifts away more and more from Max, towards the other musicians. Tolliver is great, Bartz also contributes a few nice solos (and his composition "Libra"), and Stanley Cowell is great to have on any album from that period... I'd have preferred Merritt on double bass, though... his sound on "Nommo" (Drums Unlimited) is so fat and boomy, he'd have had a better groove than on electric bass... and about Roach, I guess this is where the stuff happened, or started to happen, that the grown-ups have talked of at length, above... let me just say with respect to that discussion, that I'm quite clearly on Allen's side... now this doesn't mean "Members" is a bad album, not even a mediocre one, there's plenty of good music on it, but Max' own playing ain't quite so exciting any longer... (even though - I doubt I could, though - some may hear it's Max within one bar from any of the tunes...) edit: Merritt is partly on double bass (for instance on the title track) - but I'd wished he'd be on it on the funky opening number, for instance!

The Graz concert was the one where Hubbard got arrested on stage... Ha, that's funny! Have you heard his outbursts? It's all pretty pathetic... they should have just put a dumbass hat on his head for a few days instead of arresting him....
