I also just got the Wellstood/Jackson album - not played yet - but also "Blues by Lonnie Johnson" - wow! Featuring Hal Singer, this is a great one, Chris! Any stories to share about it?

Seems Mili was an Albanian... not that this helps, but maybe someone can get any clue out of that? Maybe like "John"? (in Hungarian "György" - as Kurtag - the opening g is a voiced "J", too... and the "y" is fused with the "ö" which is spelled as a German "ö" - can't think of an english word using that "ö"-sound, though. Anyway, if that's similar the "Gj" would end up as just voiced "J" - not sure if this deduction is a tolerable one, of course...)

Wow, great news! 1958 Messengers is perfect for me, I love that band with Golson in his prime! The Basie looks great, though I assume if it was from 1959 or 1960 it would be even better... by 1962 the band was just about to end their prime years, with key members leaving etc. There are other Armstrong 1959 items around (from Italy and Germany, in the two cases where I know). There would be tons of great things around, if the TV stations over here would open up their vaults - for instance J.E. Behrend's "Jazz gehört & gesehen" (Jazz heard and seen) show that ran for years (or decades) on German TV. That show was prob. comparable to Gleason's show, pairing some tunes with short interviews in between, or at least some spoken introductions by JEB. Rarely ever is one of those being re-broadcasted, it seems - and last time some pieces were used (in that "Greatest Jazz Film ever" or what was its stupid title, up on arte and discussed here back then) it was only short fragments and they went all b-s about it, instead of trying to regularly broadcasting some of these shows - I'm sure it wouldn't bother anyone if they had some of these on in the middle of the night...

Thomas M. Bresnahan - RIP
king ubu replied to Kevin Bresnahan's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Moving words, Kevin. My sincerest condolences. -
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Actually, considering the growing amounts of country music I'm listin' to, it's not such a weird suggestion. And there's one NZ/Oz dude - Tex Morton - that I'd happily bend an ear to. He's highly regarded by those who dig the Wilf Carter/Montana Slim sort of thing. But Slim Dusty, Keith Urban and Australian country in general - blech! I'm an ardent supporter and lover of Australian jazz, and much of the reason for that, I think, is that jazz - just about right from the get go - has always been pretty much international and adaptable. Australian jazz has its own integrity and thing going while still being part of the bigger deal. Country don't travel so well. There's something soulful that goes missing in the translation. Oz country makes me cringe. So do Oz blues. There's cool music, sometimes, in both. But they've invariably got fuck all to do with Muddy Waters or Hank Williams. Whereas, with alto saxophone master Bernie McGann (for instance) it's totally righteous to say he's all Australian and pure jazz. Well, Dusty is blech, for sure, I fully agree! Sounds like there'd some nice Australian jazz... not much known about that here! Probably not easy to lay hands on any!

Cruising towards half a million posts

Jim, care to correct my post-count, too? Thanks a lot! -
I just saw that, nice! I think I'll take a closer look at those 4 'Jazz & Cinema' vols. and weed out a bit of stuff I'm not interested in hearing (Jan Wetzel's harmonica is it so far) and put together a nice little comp. Anything else buried in those 4 vols. that one might want to skip? Hmm, hard to tell. Some's a bit on the easy side, but I like all of it. Maybe some duplicates you can skip, such as the Herb Ellis date with Roy Eldridge, Getz etc. or the Blakey and Barney Wilen soundtracks, if you have them elsewhere.

Ain't there some kind of OZ-aic of his for you to spend money on?
-
ha...

Happy birthday from a fellow (half, that is...) OZ-tralian... have a nice one, mate!

Maybe Little's best album--the band is sick, the performances are wonderful, and the charts are beyond belief--hope you dig it! Yeah! It´s an absolutely wonderful album! At the same level that those incredible Dolphy-leaded Five Spot live discs! Some alternates from the session are on "Candid Dolphy". And his "& Friend" album on Bethlehem is just (or almost) as great, in case you're looking for further ways to spend money...

Grant Green Club Mozambique UK release
king ubu replied to The Magnificent Goldberg's topic in Re-issues
Interesting discussion that went on here, indeed! Me being some kind of a historian, I cannot but wholeheartily agree with the below post (my emphasis). -
Thanks a lot for sharing these remebrances, Lazaro!
-
Thanks Matt! I was a bit (well, actually more,... I'm getting a bit touchy, I assume...) irritated by your post, as I really tried to add something to the discussion. I can understand your frustration, though... on my BFT there were a few similar reactions. Anyway, Dan should have loved #1 and #2 of the second disc, at least!
-
Sad news indeed, much too young
-
Maybe you should learn to play some of 'em ..... I did, I did, but alas not nearly as much time at hand as I'd like... and no practising for over a year by now
-
I guess it's more some kind of leftover sale - they get new stuff in now and then, it seems (when I did my second order - the above one is the third - I bought all I wanted, so most of the above wasn't in stock back then...). But I wouldn't wait too long, if there are things you really want...

Happy Birthday, J. Lar!

Ok, I see I nailed #1 and got close on #2... but I failed again miserably to recognize a familiar standard...

Alright, here's some impressions of disc two... #1 Jackie Mac? Hmmm, what's this? Some early sixties Blue Note recording but I can't pin it down right now, might be from Freddie Redd's "Connection"? Anyway, I definitely have this and I like it! Beautiful piano solo! Alto sounds a bit too sweet for my liking here, but it's never light (which is what I don't like about a lot of alto players). Just found out it's indeed #4 of Redd's Connection album. #2 Ok tune, more hardbop... I know this one as well but can't pin it down. Hmmmm, what's this again? There's an ugly phasing on the drums... is this from one of Mobley's Blue Note albums? Donald Byrd? Horace Silver? #3 A Monk tune, quite obviously, and it sounds like it's indeed a Monk quartet playing here, or at least it sounds like Rouse. Bass sounds like a later recording - Sphere? Yes, sounds definitely not like a 60s recording, much more like it could be from one of Sphere's Elektra albums... piano is - as always on Monk covers - way too tame... even more obvious when comping than in solo. Nice tune, but all Monk covers are highly debatable, to say the least. #4 I like a lot how this starts out! Makes me think of Fred Hersch (whom I don't know well enough yet - his Monk solo album I love, btw - but still it's debatable...!). Clarinet, great! "Street of Dreams"? Lovely tune! Very nice sound on clarinet... and I'm quite clueless here. My guess is this is quite a recent recording (despite the muffled piano sound - how come clarinet is captured so nicely and piano so un-nicely?). #5 Fender rhodes? Nice! Bu I don't like how the tenor bends almost each note. Electric piano solo is nice. I do like this sound! I guess this is another younger band of players? #6 Hmmm... another fairly recent recording, I assume. I'm a bit afraid to make any too outspoken comments now that I seem to have been to negative in my comments on disc one, already, but still... this fails to grab me. Tenor is nicer than on the last cut, but it's too light for my liking - the latin beat may be part of that. Pianist has listened to some Tyner. I assume this is my problem, mainly, but nowadays that even stuff like Brötzmann is "classic", I often don't see the point in playing this kind of music. Not that I wouldn't listen to any contemporary mainstream players, but I just get more and more selective. I hope this was a thoughtful enough comment. #7 This starts out pretty nicely! And here's a tenor I enjoy quite some more. Also the bass/drum accompaniment is more varied. Good one! Ah, there's that weird sound again, and the bass clarinet... what's this sound? Some analogue synth stuff? #8 Things are getting better! ;-) I like this groove quite a bit! Nice opening with just percussion and stummed bass. #9 Weird recording mix here? A live recording - ah, yes, an audience recording... I can see how this builds and how there's some serious musicianship and development in there, but I'm not a fan of this guitar sound... sax was rather nice, though! #10 Ah, another one by the same group - nice! I like this tune much better! Sounds slightly familiar, I think... nice ending for dsic two here! Thanks for compiling these two discs, Matt!

Hmm, hard to choose! Btw, ECM released one more, the duo with Gismonti! The first I heard was the Cherry, and maybe that one's still my favourite? But I miss the Gismonti and Rubalcaba ones... Bley, Allen are great, LMO is good as well... but the Henderson strikes me as not that great - doesn't really grab me, and was quite a let-down after the long wait.
-
Thanks Nate and everybody. I did order some things, skipped the Eneidi (the samples seemed quite a bit less intriguing than a great live recording I have) and Butcher/Masaoka, too. But I did add two of the ones D.D. recommended (the indian sax guy and that larger bay area group). Edit: skipped Tri-O and Volkov/Kuryokhin, too - the order would have just gotten too expensive...

Mean to ask you... where do you keep the booklets?
king ubu replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I use mine to wipe my ... you know, when there's nothing else around... I just cut them up in pieces and pile them next to the toilet... -
Yes, I'm aware of that - I just thought that the only Peiffer discussion that might have taken place here would have been in this thread, so I chose to post this here. Seems the disc is only available at CDbaby? I guess I'll order it... the JiP discs are great!
-
Thinking of another CD baby order... anyone can tell me about the following discs? VLADIMIR VOLKOV, SERGEI KURIOKHIN, KESHAVAN MASLAK: jet lag TRI-O (SERGEI LETOV, ARKADY SHILKLOPER...): trialogue PAOLO ANGELI / HAMID DRAKE: uotha LISLE ELLIS, MARCO ENEIDI, PETER VALSAMIS: sound on survival live HERMANN BUHLER: alto solo DICK GRIFFIN: a dream for rashaan BUTCHER / MASAOKA / ROBAIR: guerrilla mosaics They all look at least interesting! I think David has mentioned Buhler positively a few times, so I'll go for that one. I've heard bits of the Angeli/Drake on radio (it was broadcast live before it came out on CD) and quite liked it. The other ones I know nothing of...
