  1. No, I think it's indeed Melillo - but it's been some time since I played any of this set, so my memory may be a bit off the mark as far as whackiness is concerned...
  2. So what's going on here? Ubu tells us he saw the Lateef (same batch, right?) in jewel case packaging. ← And he's right! At least for the GSA territory (which means Germany-Switzerland-Austria). Though the batch (Barbieri, Ayler, White, Lateef, Payne, Sanders..) was here announced as part of the LPR series it is delivered as "Impulse Originals" and is in Jewel Case Packaging!!! ← Do you (or Mike?) happen to know for sure if they use the same remasterings as are being used for the US LPR releases?
  3. Please tell us more about this!
  4. "Domino" has some additional tracks! Which Dylans? I miss one of the eighties discs, I think, but have had the others for 10 or more years and somehow think there's a few nice cuts on each!
  5. Any idea Brownie when that would be ? As I'm in PAris in November for few days again, so protenially there is some chance to to catch this show.
  6. Bentsy, I missed this back in July! Glad you got and enjoy the set! brownie: you seem to have had a magnificient evening there! I wish I had been there! Rhoda Scott was recorded at the Hampton jazz club... any hope for Urtreger?
  7. ← Yup, Lynch! But no on Galper - he's good, but not the guy I was thinking about. Maybe it's indeed Melillo, but being at work I cannot check!
  8. Now that's just *plain* wrong, Sir! (sorry! ) That Berlin set is terrific, in my opinion! Beautiful acoustics, Miles in top form, the quintet in a rather quiet and explorative mood... and again: the sound: you could hear a feather drop on the floor on that recording! How I would rank the boxes I don't know. I think the acoustic ones would be on top, not because I dislike the electric stuff, but... then the JJ was a huge surprise, and I loved it, much because of its simplicity and clean-ness (as opposed to the collages and soundscapes of IaSW and BB). I love the Gil Evans box, the second quintet, the Plugged Nickel... the Coltrane of course (but I knew that stuff well before the box was out, so somehow I still don't really consider that great music part of the box... rather I think in particular sessions and albums). The 7 Steps I have but haven't made my way all through yet. True, the opening studio dates are not up to what was to come, but hey... Victor Feldman (and his tunes) I always like to listen to! And I like Coleman a lot, and loved the 1964 concert and the Antibes set long before I had the box. As for the Berlin concert, see above
  9. I have it and like it, but it's far from the most listened or favourite set. Enjoyable bebop of the pure kind. Some sessions are with trumpet (Harrell and who again?) or trombone (Hal Crook), some are quartets. There's that whack pianist on one or two dates (Melillo, is that him?). Of course there's the rhythm team of Bill Goodwin and Steve Gilmore... a fine set I'd say, but far from essential. I look at it like this: Woods has a huge discography (tons of releases on small European labels... many italian labels, I think), and this Mosaic collects a few rarities, that most probably are just as good as all his other stuff (he's a pro, so it's all good, but it has a bit of a sameness to it, I think). The five discs of the Mosaic are about as much Woods as I need, and this is definitely a nice way to have it. On a sidenote: if it seems like I'm not that much a fan of Woods', yup, may be correct. But I heard a recent radio broadcast of Woods' quartet playing live in Zurich with the Zurich Chamber Orchestra (dir. André Bellmont - anyone here knows him?) - Woods played very very very beautiful on that concert! And the arrangements were his, too.

    Verve LPRs

I'm starting to think the same. Ubu needs a rest! ← Just to set the record straight: check this thread, or rather read the posts following this post.
  11. You're most probably right, but: I put the disc into a player at the shop and caught a few minutes, and was somehow displeased with the sound. Sounded not particularly good at all, just ok.
  12. Ok ok, I wanted to post again myself yesterday, but wasn't online at all. Two new Verve/Universal series seem to have just been started over here: "VERVE ORIGINALS" (nice price, prob. 10-13 €) - Satchmo meets O.Peterson (earlier on VME) - Sonny Side Up (earlier on VME) - Quincy Bossa (earlier on VBR) - Ellington/Hodges "Back to Back (..VME) - Szabo "Spellbinder" - Michael White - Hawk encounters Ben (...VME) - Pres w/OP (... VME) - Nina Simone "High Priestess" - JOS "The Cat" (...VME) - D. Krall "All for You" - Gato Chapter 4 "Live in NY" - Joe Hendersons "Lush Life" - Benny Carter "Further Definitions" - Pharoah "Elevation" "VERVE CLASSICS" (full prize, prob. 16-19 €) - Ella Meets Louis (...VME?) - A. C. Jobim ... The Composer (...VME?) - Love Supreme (yet another version...) - Getz/Gilberto (...VME) - Dinah "What Diff'rence a Day Makes" (...VME) - Basie "April in Paris" (VME) These are a few of the discs I saw when I went back to that store. Saw also the Lateef, of course, and in another store "Here's to Life", the Horn w/Strings discs. What I guess from this is: we will no longer get regular VMEs and LPRs here. What I am confused about is that there is no remastering info on the Originals discs (I have not opened any of the classics, which come in digipacks, looking - from the outside - similar to the Universal France Anniversay ones, which are nicer than the VMEs were they saved carboard on the front... never understood why). The missing remastering info let me stay away from getting the Lateef. So if anyone knows that these discs *only* use remasterings already done elsewhere (for the LPR series, for the VME series), I would appreciate if that anyone would share this here! How about the discs like that Shirley Horn or the Joe Henderson? Do they really need a new remastering already? I am aware that the French Anniversary series did offer remasterings of mostly recent (was it 20 yrs they were celebrating, or 25?) discs, but I haven't had a chance to compare any.
  13. Ok ok fellas, I'm a madman, I confess! And this post makes me run to that store after work, yessir! EDIT: Let me, dear friends, post my current signature here, five times (obviously), for future reference:
  14. Don't know if that tells anything, but German Amazon has not tagged this as an LPR: link Same for El Gato
  15. Happy Birthday, Mr. Bill! And apologies for not taking part in the discussion of your BFT! Have been in the army for most of September, and work and other obligations are piling up...
  16. So what's going on here? Ubu tells us he saw the Lateef (same batch, right?) in jewel case packaging. ← Maybe I got crazy from looking at my signature? Or could that be another Verve/Universal series that is releasing this and the Gato Chapter 4? Or am I just completely out of my mind? Or is there another new reissue of Brother Yusef's? Won't be able to check back at the store this week, and once they've sold it they won't restock, I guess... (they had two of the recent Sony/Legacy reissue... how's that?)
  17. Red: you can find her playing organ (and singing on one cut) on this fine Ray Anderson disc, if I'm not mistaken:
  18. So next time I burn some for you I should burn at 2.4X?
  19. Brooks just got into the thread because of the saw solos, not because anyone thought he was on this disc. Freddie Waits is a terrific drummer! I wish he was on more sixties BN releases! Love his playig wherever he pops up! A favourite: Bobby Jones' "Hill Country Suite" album on Enja. Oh, and: Hi Mike! Long time no see!

Now my glass is emptily full. I guess it's also a question of time. I mean, I'm still young, but at the same time I have enough things I want to do to realize that there are many other (possibly great) things that I will most likely never come around doing. Like, I could probably read twenty times as many books that I'd love to read than fit into one lifetime... same applies to music. There's a few thousand discs around, and I am constantly having huge piles of stuff I'd love to listen right now and right here... so why spend my time listening to stuff I don't really get much from? That, indeed has nothing to do with being open-minded or not.
  21. I use Sony, mostly. Never had a bad burn on many a hundred CDRs. Before that I used to have TDK, but they don't always have them anymore at the stores I frequent. Prize: 20 Franks (roughly 15$) for a 50 spindle. As for Japanese stuff: never saw any here, and I reckon prize would be *at least* twice as much as the Sonys (remember, this is Switzerland...) I had extracting problems with Maxells (received in trades - extractions taking up to 4 hours, some I didn't have enough patience to complete... when the remaining time went up to 20 hrs with EAC on "secure"-settings... gets pretty frustrating). With Memorex (I got 100 of those when I bought blanks for the first time) I had 10+% gone bad while burning, so I stopped using them... Burning speed: 8X. The Sonys I buy say 48X, but maximum speed I could choose usually is 24X. How about burning speed for DVDs? I use Verbatim +Rs at 8X.

my can of beer is three quarters empty again, already...
  23. To go off topic again: there's some Mingus boots around from the seventies with that Brooks guy (sorry, I always mix them up, but I do remember that one's called Billy and the other Roy...) playing some saw.
